This is a great museum. I loved the combination of aviation history and the local stories that you can find here. I especially liked seeing the early planes and gliders from an earlier era. The aviation pioneers were brave!

Great visit got to learn a lot of history and look at cool plane's.my husband and I really enjoy history. We would suggest you go here you can learn a lot of information and the staff is very friendly and helpful

The townspeople have done a wonderful job of documenting the history of aviation--all with Iowa connections--from the beginnings to the astronauts. In addition, the hangar has 8 vintage aircraft--and you can get up close and examine the planes. Bravo to Greenfield for a superb job!

We have been to several large aviation museums, they were very good but not on a personal level as this museum. This museum salutes all Iowa military and non military men & women who have made a great contribution to our country. Everyone at this museum was so friendly and so glad you came and enjoyed yourself. Please go if you can.

Normally I don’t take the time to write reviews, but this museum deserves my utmost attention. Iowa has good reason to be proud of their contribution to freedom and in this museum you can learn why. The staff are personable and time flies when visiting with them. Though I’ve been to quite a few museums I don’t believe that any have as much history per square foot as this one. What I learned most is that Iowa, you can hold your head high!!

Upon walking in the door I was greeted and given a complete and thorough tour of everything. It was like I was a VIP. Everything section was explained, every aircraft was commented upon. Then I was let lose to re-visit on my own. What a great museum. If you're ever driving anywhere near DesMoines, make the trip!

....but may not be if just a general interest in aviation.
The museum does do a fairly good job of documenting Iowa's aviation history. I feel it covers all aspects and era's very well, considering how some of the older history can be lost.
The hanger does have a unique group of general aviation aircraft, most fairly old. I will say that this is one of the cleanest collections of old craft I've ever seen; none with rags or drip pans underneath. Several vintage and unique craft in the collection, even have a Pitts special. Other than an A-7 Corsair II outside, no military aircraft.
The museum does a great job of compiling information on the people selected for the aviation hall of fame.
dislikes: $10 admission is kind of steep for a facility of this size. I get that you're a non-profit (told me like 6 times). When we said we didn't want a guided tour, we meant it; wife had a hard time looking at exhibits because you followed and talked to her the whole way through!
Missing: list of WW II training bases in Iowa. list of bomber crash sites (I've visited two in Pottawatomie Cnty alone). Nothing on the United 232 crash at Sioux City.

Worth the trip to visit, Small Museum , however still worth your time. Sometimes Older Prop/Propeller Planes fly into this tiny air strip. Amazing to see an hear them. Flash Back to the Past !!!

Great value for anyone interested in aviation. There is an impressive amount of information on Iowans in aviation from the early days at the turn of the 20th century to the present. There is a hangar with a number of vintage aircraft and information around 'famous plane crashes' that have taken place in the state.
There is an Iowa Aviation Hall of Fame and library in the back of the hangar with racks of books, reference materials, and videos for perusal or research.
This is a very quiet and quaint operation - don't expect anything too grand...but you will find a great deal of information with 'Iowa nice' treatment at a bargain price.

The Iowa Aviation Museum located at Greenfield Municipal Airport specialises in highlighting the state's particular contribution to the development of aviation since the earliest years. The collection of aircraft spans the period from the interwar years to post war military airframes and includes rare types. The staff are most knowledgeable and are particularly welcoming to out-of-state visitors.
