Hard to find and we wandered off the beaten path, but found the small parking lot. We took the roughly ¼ mile path to the Alcove Spring. Alas in July, 2021 there was no waterfall or much water. Still it was interesting to find the alcove with 1826 engraving in the stone. Many beautiful butterflies in the area.

The spring was still flowing with cool, clear water. The waterfall wasn't running. It was interesting to see the inscriptions in the rock. Columbine were blooming along the trail too. This is a spot for those who appreciate little treasures.

On my most recent visit, the spring was basically dry due to the ongoing drought in Kansas. I still found plenty to do and had an interesting visit. As usual, I had the entire place to myself. There are a number of trails that a visitor may walk, and I did more walking than usual this time.

It was a great time to stand on top of the hill, see the sunset vista, listen to coyotes and wild turkeys tell the evening hello or the day good bye.

Located on the historic path of the Oregon Trail, Alcove Spring is brimming with history. The park is modestly difficult to access, but the drive to get there is gorgeous. There are many beautiful viewpoints in the park all along its paths and trails You can hike or mountain bike around the park for hours and there are multiple informative interpretive sights.

A quiet place along the Oregon Trail. Still marked by those who came before. Hard to believe so many people endured the hardships and moved west at the rate of a few miles per day.

An easy hike after the small parking lot and easy to find off the main road.

It’s quite remarkable that it still exists to all to see.

The trails were pretty easy and short, which was good for us as a family. If you're expecting a big waterfall please realize you're in Kansas. It was good to see the Oregon Trail and the springs. A little off the beaten path but it was worth the trip

This is a great place for a walk with a great story about great overcomers. In the middle of no where the folks on the Oregon Trail waysided and survived. Pretty cool springs. Pretty cool story. If you find yourself near here...you should visit it.

We stopped by Alcove Springs during a Sunday road trip. It's a free attraction and one worth seeing!

For me, the falls were not worth the visit but the history of the place was definitely interesting. The fact that so many people had taken the time to carve dates and names into the stones was amazing. I think to appreciate this place you need to appreciate the fact that these people were truly putting their lives in danger by making this trip and it took an incredible amount of bravery, money and time to make the journey west.

I thought that the signage was great and did a good job of narrating the history of the place. They also have some helpful maps near the parking lot. I thought that the park appeared clean and well maintained.

We hiked to the springs and then east through the meadow and eventually up to the hilltop north of the parking lot. The views were impressive with everything being green in April and you could clearly see the ruts from the trail from the hilltop. Take some time to walk some of the trails!

All that said, I don't know if this is a place that kids would enjoy. You have to appreciate the history to appreciate the location and most young kids just won't get it. I also wouldn't visit during the late summer as I'm sure the heat would make the hiking brutal.

Many years ago pioneers heading for Oregon stopped to rest and drink cool, clean spring water. This little hidden gem has seen little improvement since the great migration began over 100 years ago. You can see the Spring and imagine the joy people had when they drank that first sip of spring water. You can see the ruts left in the ground and imagine what it would have. Even like traveling. A monument is set up to remember a person from the Donner Party who died near this location. What fascinated me the most is some of the history and the carvings left by others. One of the groups that stopped and carved their legacy into stone here were members of the Donner party. I often wondered if they would have continued on more quickly if they would have met with the same fate. People who want to learn more about the Oregon Trail would love this treasure. It is very rustic. There are no bathrooms and you are left on your own to explore this oasis.
