Small museum but very interesting exhibits. Clearly, the people at this museum love what they are doing and honor the rich area history they research, collect and display. This is your opportunity to view rural life going back beyond Civil War days and to learn about the men and women who lived that life and made that history. It is really well worth your time to visit.

The Wakarusa River Valley Heritage Museum is located in Bloomington East Park on Clinton Lake. It is a cute little museum that documents the history of the valley, Clinton Lake and the Lone Star Lake area. They are open seasonally and in 2016 will reopen April 30.

This is the little museum with all the history of the Wakarusa Valley communities that disappeared when Clinton Lake was built. So much history in this place. There is a research room with computers and a library and files for genealogy researchers. Open May - October, weekends only.

This museum is rich with stories of local home owners in the area and small towns that are a part of the Clinton/Wakarusa communities and the freedom fighters/underground railroad 'Angels' that helped shelter slaves and get them closer to their freedom.
Centered around the homestead of Col. J.C. Stelle - whose home was saved due to its historical significance to house the original museum. Unfortunately, the home was doomed for its demise due to vandalism and the museum was moved to the newly renovated Dairy Barn that was part of the homestead.
Though the house itself is no longer. A portion of the home-made, hand-fired brick wall (with Wakarusa clay) was retained and is on display in front of the Dairy Barn and today's museum. The cornerstone and original steps and part of the original foundation are still present.
This place is worth the stop whether you are a local resident or visiting from out of town.
Don't forget to leave a donation.

My mother lived on the wakarusa river in a boxcar in the early 40 Ty's could that be true
