We visited the base to see the Old Disciplinary Barracks, the Post Museum and the Buffalo Soldier Memorial Park. All the locations were very informative. The Museum was a great find!!

Always a blessing to be on Fort Leavenworth. You do need a pay pass to get in, but it is an Army installation, so just get a day pass and enjoy Merit lake, free movies on the weekends, the museum, the historical markers all over fort, the buffalo soldier memorial park....

Wasted journey to go see the #1 thing to do in Leavenworth as you need to be a US Citizen to get access. Took our European ID, made us wait and then finally told us that we couldn’t go in. Surely they should have a sign, or at least the first person you speak to should let you know...

On a recent business trip to the oldest active United States Army post and oldest permanent settlement in Kansas, I had the opportunity to explore the installation and see the historical architecture, the old military Disciplinary Barracks complex, and the tribute to the African-American soldiers of the U.S 10th Cavalry Regiments of the United States Army.
As I explored the installation and realizing it was built in 1827, it was easy to imagine what life on the Fort must have been like during the tumultuous period of the expansion westward and the conflicts with the Native American tribes. Driving into the now decommissioned United States Disciplinary Barracks (at one point the Department of Defenses’ only maximum security prison) gave perspective to Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen being court martialed and sentenced to serve a sentence such as Second Lieutenant William Calley for his violations of the Uniform Code of Justice (UCMJ) in his actions at the 1968 My Lai Massacre in Vietnam.
Today the Disciplinary Barracks is gone and the United States Army Command and General Staff College (CGSC) is the focus of this historically significant Fort.
If in the area, I would highly recommend visiting the historical Fort.

I was stunned by the vastness of this installation. It's huge. I so enjoyed driving around and seeing the many historical buildings and sites. Highlight was certainly the Oregon and Santa Fe Trail origins right next to the Missouri River. Buffalo Soldier Monument is also very neat. I only stopped here because i was driving through, but I am so glad I did. Very, very cool.

I had contacted Deb Goodrich, our Friend and Recognized Kansas Historian, before we left, if she had any suggestions what to see and she gave us some suggestions and we saw things that were unplanned for as we went to Fort Leavenworth. “Fort Leavenworth is History Come Alive”.
Getting into Fort Leavenworth takes a Security Check. We we able to proceed through the Main Gate. We saw the Buffalo Soldiers Statue among other recognition plaques, and other statues.
We proceeded to the Frontier Army Museum that was established in 1938 which Deb Goodrich had recommended that we see. We saw many displays and Deb had encouraged us to, especially, see Lincoln’s Carriage [We had seen a Lincoln Carriage at the Judy Garland Museum in Grand Rapids, Minnesota that was pulled by “a horse of a different color”] when he was in Kansas, Custer’s Sleigh which he had built, and Grant’s cannon which he pulled during the Mexican War.
Kansas made an impression on Lincoln. A few months later, when asked if he would advise someone to “go west,” Lincoln replied: “If I went West, I think I would go to Kansas--to Leavenworth or Atchison. Both of them are, and will continue to be, fine growing places.” We saw the first two but not Grant's cannon.
We ate at the12th Brick Grill in Fort Leavenworth, but we had trouble finding it. [I wish something indicating where the 12th Brick Grill was located was clearer.] My wife, finally, found a sign in the window on the entry way into the old prison indicating the presence of the 12th Brick Grill inside the building. In our search for 12th Brick Grill, though, we saw different things like the stables and the Fort Leavenworth Memorial Chapel as well as the Missouri River.
We, finally, found the 12th Brick Grill inside the old prison and had dinner/lunch. I had the “Cell Block Special” Sandwich and Dixie had the Barney Sandwich. It was neat to have dinner/lunch with the BRAVE individuals, Male and Female, that are serving our GREAT country. I hope you will plan on dining there, too, when you are in Fort Leavenworth. The prices are reasonable for the food and the atmosphere was very special eating with our military personnel.
We decided not to tour the old prison and saved it for another visit and decided to come home. There is so much to see at Fort Leavenworth that it is going to take a person several visits to see all that there is to see.
If you ever get the chance to see Leavenworth, Lansing, and Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, “DON’T MISS THEM!

Hello
We are planning a trip to see the fort in a few days from now
What is your policy for bringing a personal licensed handgun on base?
Thank you

You should probably check with the Provost Marshall to get the most up to date policy.
What is the process now of going to the cemetery
Last year there was a a 4 hr wait to even fill
Out the forms?

Yes I agree to come a day or so early to get a one day pass to not have a delay on Memorial Day. My husband and I have cards to get on Post so the only way I know is to go to Visitor Center and get the one day pass. You will need drivers license, vehicle registration and insurance information. They will want to know reason for visiting Fort Leavenworth. Hope this helps.

This Friday the 31st, 4 couples will be coming to Ft. Leavenworth and would love to have a guided tour. Does the Post offer any such tours; if so how can we get in touch to make arrangements? Would also like more info on the restaurant in the old prison remains. Any tips for a faster entry onto the post, we are all civilians and will have 2 cars. Planning to be there around 2pm. Thanks in advance for your help!

HI Debbie,
Ft. Leavenworth offers a self-guided tour. Please visit the Ft. Leavenworth Garrison website to learn more. The website appears to be down as of writing this, so keep trying through out the day.
The 12th Brick Grille is the restaurant located within the historic Disciplinary Barracks. You can get more information through the Ft. Leavenworth MWR website.
To gain entry as a civilian, you'll need to first go through the visitor control center, which is located just north of Metropolitan Ave on Sherman Ave. More information can be found on the Ft. Leavenworth Garrison website.

Are civilians allowed on post, if so , what ID etc, is required?

Good morning from Leavenworth! Yes, civilians are allowed on post, but that process is right in the middle of change. The exact date has not been released, but the projection is that sometime in February, the change will be complete. Currently, civilians enter the main gate through the right-hand lane. Anyone 16 or older needs photo ID, and you need to open every door and exit your vehicle while it is inspected. After the change, there will be an added step to the process. Civilians will first go to a station about a block down the road, park and go inside, present ID and have a criminal check performed. Then they will go to the main gate for the round of current procedures.
