We hiked the shorter loop trail, which wound around some interesting rock formations. This is a working ranch and you may see cattle on the trail. Give them a few minutes and they’ll move on. You will need to drive several miles on a gravel road to reach the trailhead, so drive accordingly. A passenger car should be sufficient in most cases.

We were the only people here in a beautiful fall day! Took our lunch and did the 5.5 mile loop. I liked the chalk cliffs and the younger gravels on top of them. Lots of quartz and feldspar pebbles. A group of mule deer watched us from a ridge. It was cool to see the rare wild buckwheat. Very nice to really get completely away from it all for the day. We did have a couple of stream crossings, nothing more than boot height if you watch your step.

I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to visit this but if you are in the area visiting Monument Rocks and some of the other attractions and have some extra time, it's worth checking out. Unfortunately the trails have not been kept up so it's very easy to lose them. There's an arrow engraved into a stone at the beginning that points aimlessly to no apparent trail. But no matter. It's very easy to just walk around and explore some rock formations, beautiful wildflowers and prairie dog holes. If you're there at the right time, you might be lucky to see one. We saw a couple on the along the road as we drove to it. As we walked around, we did come across the trail for a ways before it disappeared again. Found a number engraved on a stone and then a divide in the trail in which you could choose between a one mile hike or a 6 mile hike. I recommend getting a map at the Buffalo Bill Cultural Center in order to find Smoky Valley Ranch as there are no signs along roads to direct you to it.

We took two different routes to reach the trailhead. Both routes are over dirt roads which proved a challenge after the recent rains. Would have liked a little more clearance on our vehicle at times. Reached the Smoky Valley Ranch trailhead and found it well marked. The trail is not for people with mobility issues. Thankful for The Nature Conservancy's vision as it was great being able to walk the land.

We visited the Little Jerusalem area on a tour of western Kansas geology. For the most part the entire Smoky Valley Ranch/Little Jerusalem area is not open to the public since the Nature Conservancy only recently acquired the property (17,000 acres) and has not completed the necessary improvements (?) to allow public access. We were met by a representative of the Conservancy and she led a hike through the Little Jerusalem area for those hardy enough to tackle it. The area is very rough and SHOULD NOT be attempted by those with mobility issues. There are poisonous snakes in the area. My 7 year-old granddaughter thoroughly enjoyed this location but she stayed close to the tour leader and FOLLOWED DIRECTIONS.

Hiking area recently opened by the Nature Conservancy. Two loop trails, a 1 mile loop around some formations, and a 5 mile loop through native prairie and wetlands.
