Last week, I toured the Kentucky Coal Museum and learned quite a bit about coal mining and its culture. There were four levels of the building, each holding a different exhibit. I enjoyed the Lorretta Lynn section and the interactive experience in a model coal mine. It was fascinating to look at old pictures from Harlan County and see the everyday items that residents used inside and outside the mines. This has to be on the itinerary if you’re visiting Harlan County!

The Kentucky Coal Mining Museum provides a one-of-a-kind experience into Appalachian coal mining history. The museum recreates much of the history of the coal camp and dives deeply not just into the life of the miners but also their families during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries over four floors and multiple displays. My favorites were the coal miner's house and the mining equipment exhibit. Also, the staff is extremely friendly and eager to answer all of your questions. Overall, if you want to understand Kentucky's and Appalachia's contributions to the coal industry in the United States and worldwide, you definitely do not want to miss it.

They have fossils in the gift shop! The museum was absolutely fascinating, especially the mine example you could walk through! But my favorite part was in the gift shop when I found they sold geodes, fossils, and other rocks found in the mines! I was very excited to see they had Trilobite and ammonite fossils along with petrified wood fossils and many more!

Kentucky Coal Mining Museum was very captivating and informational. Many artifacts contributed to my learning of the region. I recommend this museum to anyone, whether they are interested in history, coal mining, or just wanting something to do.

This museum is across from the Benham School House Inn, besides the thrift store This and That. There were four levels to the museum with interactive elements for each floor. The interactive coal mine was fantastic, with hard hats and pick axes to use, making you hunch over to explore the mine. There is a gift shop section with Native American dreamcatchers for $12, children's fidget toys for $5, and local art prints of Kentucky's history for $15.

We checked ahead of arriving in the Benham/Lynch area and found the published hours of the Museum to be open at 10:00 AM Tuesday-Saturday. We arrived on a Tuesday at around 12:00 Noon only to find the door locked. We called the museum's phone number. Someone answered the phone and told us that they only have two employees and she guessed that one of the employees didn't show up today, so they were closed. She never offered that they might re-open later in the day, or to have the other employee (herself?) open the facility. She just basically didn't seem to care at all that they were closed in the middle of the day.

A great museum all about coal mining in the area. Four floors of exhibits of everyday life, life down in the mines, and a few songwriters and singers from the area. Lots and lots of information. We enjoyed the mock mine in the basement and the venues of everyday places.

I’m not from Harlan County but in my time living here I have come to see how much mining and the history of mining is deeply woven into the fabric of this region. So I knew at some point I had to check out this museum. My mother came along with me and we enjoyed each of the little vignette-type displays representing mining life. As much as this is a museum of coal mining and the coal mining culture, it is also a flashback to earlier American culture. I enjoyed the recreations of the old 1940s kitchens and the display of the old physician’s equipment. It’s also important that the museum showcases the x-rays depicting the Black Lung that now is just as representative of the coal life as anything else. In a region where coal is still King, this museum was a great way to look back at how far it’s come and see how much has been lost.

Even if you are relatively familiar with coal’s critical contribution to our country’s success, the complexities connected with the company-town culture—both good and bad, short-term and long-lasting—are left for the visitor to ponder. So much detailed information so graphically displayed in the three stories of the old commissary keeps even those typically uninterested in museums spellbound for hours (My husband is such a one and was in no hurry to leave!) We were especially fascinated by the scale model of Loony Ridge coal seams, with their company mine shaft “blueprints” for simultaneously supporting and “hollowing out” the black belly of the earth. And then, to enter the basement’s life-size replica of only a miniscule portion of an underground mining operation is to gain an even greater appreciation for the love these miners must have had for their families to endure their employment here! The staff here are friendly and intimately knowledgeable of all facets of this museum and welcomed our questions.

The best museums tell a story which draws the visitor into the context of the subject. While the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is chock full of mining and camp life-related artifacts, the story is missing.
And the story of coal mining in Appalachia is a great one. Coal drove the industrial revolution in the USA, and the miners made this possible. Dangerous and unfair conditions were overcome by brilliant technical advances and decades of labor organization and protest. The museum has many related artifacts, but none of them are presented in a context.
Just one example: an exhibit on medical care in the mining communities features a set of x-rays of miners lungs, which don't look particularly healthy. Though there are some highly technical medical notes on the x-rays, there is no information provided by the museum about what these x-rays are supposed to represent. Nothing about black lung, or any of the other ailments particular to miners. What a missed opportunity to tell an important story.
There is an impressive collection of artifacts gathered here. What is needed is a curator who can research the significance of many of these items and weave this info into a compelling story for visitors.
