Not Open.... Didn't Seem To Care
2021年6月
We checked ahead of arriving in the Benham/Lynch area and found the published hours of the Museum to be open at 10:00 AM Tuesday-Saturday. We arrived on a Tuesday at around 12:00 Noon only to find the door locked. We called the museum's phone number. Someone answered the phone and told us that they only have two employees and she guessed that one of the employees didn't show up today, so they were closed. She never offered that they might re-open later in the day, or to have the other employee (herself?) open the facility. She just basically didn't seem to care at all that they were closed in the middle of the day.

A fall trip

A great museum all about coal mining in the area. Four floors of exhibits of everyday life, life down in the mines, and a few songwriters and singers from the area. Lots and lots of information. We enjoyed the mock mine in the basement and the venues of everyday places.

A Very Interesting Look At The Past
2019年10月
I’m not from Harlan County but in my time living here I have come to see how much mining and the history of mining is deeply woven into the fabric of this region. So I knew at some point I had to check out this museum. My mother came along with me and we enjoyed each of the little vignette-type displays representing mining life. As much as this is a museum of coal mining and the coal mining culture, it is also a flashback to earlier American culture. I enjoyed the recreations of the old 1940s kitchens and the display of the old physician’s equipment. It’s also important that the museum showcases the x-rays depicting the Black Lung that now is just as representative of the coal life as anything else. In a region where coal is still King, this museum was a great way to look back at how far it’s come and see how much has been lost.

Learn more than you could ever think to ask!
2019年11月
Even if you are relatively familiar with coal’s critical contribution to our country’s success, the complexities connected with the company-town culture—both good and bad, short-term and long-lasting—are left for the visitor to ponder. So much detailed information so graphically displayed in the three stories of the old commissary keeps even those typically uninterested in museums spellbound for hours (My husband is such a one and was in no hurry to leave!) We were especially fascinated by the scale model of Loony Ridge coal seams, with their company mine shaft “blueprints” for simultaneously supporting and “hollowing out” the black belly of the earth. And then, to enter the basement’s life-size replica of only a miniscule portion of an underground mining operation is to gain an even greater appreciation for the love these miners must have had for their families to endure their employment here! The staff here are friendly and intimately knowledgeable of all facets of this museum and welcomed our questions.

Lotsa Stuff, Little Context.
2019年10月
The best museums tell a story which draws the visitor into the context of the subject. While the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is chock full of mining and camp life-related artifacts, the story is missing.
And the story of coal mining in Appalachia is a great one. Coal drove the industrial revolution in the USA, and the miners made this possible. Dangerous and unfair conditions were overcome by brilliant technical advances and decades of labor organization and protest. The museum has many related artifacts, but none of them are presented in a context.
Just one example: an exhibit on medical care in the mining communities features a set of x-rays of miners lungs, which don't look particularly healthy. Though there are some highly technical medical notes on the x-rays, there is no information provided by the museum about what these x-rays are supposed to represent. Nothing about black lung, or any of the other ailments particular to miners. What a missed opportunity to tell an important story.
There is an impressive collection of artifacts gathered here. What is needed is a curator who can research the significance of many of these items and weave this info into a compelling story for visitors.

Great visuals of our past
2019年10月
We enjoyed the museum and were touched by the letters and newspaper clippings about mining accidents and deaths. Also, we learned a lot about coal and how we need it! I didn't give it a 5 because some of the displays need some attention and care given to them. And if you love Loretta Lynn, some of her things are on display there.

Impressive Museum With a Wide Variety of Displays
2019年7月 • 家庭
This impressive museum contains a wide variety of items on four levels, including a gift shop. I enjoyed touring it with my mom, a sister, and a niece on Saturday, July 13, 2019.

A portion of the basement includes a mock mine about 54 inches in height at its entrance which allows one to experience a bit of what it’s like to be underground. As you seek to walk or crawl around it, think about the fact that many mines in southeastern Kentucky are significantly less than 54 inches high.

The museum contains displays related to various aspects of coal mining operations, including old mining caps, lights, and various pieces of equipment. But, it also includes displays of a barber shop, a home’s furnishings, a hospital room, a store, and a soda/sandwich shop. A display related to Loretta Lynn who grew up in southeastern Kentucky includes at least two dresses that she wore.

I urge persons visiting the museum to consider enjoying lunch at the Schoolhouse Inn across the street and to also visit nearby Lynch, Kentucky where an exhibition mine can be toured, and various old company structures can be seen, and there is a train locomotive and train car that persons can climb into, etc.

Admission to the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is $8 for adults, with cheaper prices for senior citizens and children. I urge persons in the area to seek to visit it.

Large amount of local history to take in, Very good Museum in a remote location
2019年5月 • 夫妻情侣
My wife and I stayed at the Schoolhouse Inn and went to the old company store building housing this excellent museum, 4 levels to see and read all the great history of the area including an area on their most famous local Loretta Lynn. The building is well preserved and presents itself very well. I was surprised that they have enough money to keep the building up with good a/c and an elevator on the low prices charged for admission. It is in a very remote section of the mountains with no major roads to get here but we were not disappointed. It was a fun and informative thing to do while in the area,

This place is nestled in the mountains and it’s another hidden gem. The people are friendly and open to you walking around at your own pace. They’re great! Across the street is the Old Benham School that has been turned into a bed and breakfast and keeps the school intact though. Awesome place. Can’t wait to get to stay there!

The museum is set in the old company store. Lots of historic artifacts outlining life in coal country. Different exhibits highlight Justified, Loretta Lynn, how coal is formed and mined, etc. Upper floors are accessible by elevator. There are also souvenirs and local crafts for sale
