Being both semi disabled we can walk some of the way round and ride our buggy the rest. Trampers are avalable too from the Visitor Centre
There are quiet, cool, green and shady areas full of interesting trees and history
Lots of memorial seats with beautiful vistas. People have loved this favourite place for many years
Two brilliant cafes where there is always a welcome in spotlessly clean surroundings. The smaller one has a great outside space with birdsong

We meet lots of well behaved dogs here but it's not safe for them or us to swim in the lovely pond where we often see fishermen. Day tickets are available according to the notice
There's bags of space for children to run around and have fun
And there's a gift shop !
Big meadows full of wild grasses and buttercups are mown only by paths for us to explore
The whole place isn't manicured like a city park but kept in excellent fettle by lovely groundsmen.
Well signposted paths so you shouldn't get lost
Lots of different scenery so never boring
There's a disabled only car park where the old Hall once stood with good information boards showing the history of the place. A converted water tower too.
Did I mention the extrordinary ancient trees ?
Can't fault this place
Well done Derbyshire County Council and its staff and Thankyou !

I've been coming here for years but, I will not ever be returning and would never bring my young children here! Every evening the car parks have a lot of youth's meeting up in their car's, driving around like idiots sometimes racing, the amount of litter they throw around with broken glass and beer cans everywhere hazard not only for children but wildlife!! The drugs have got worse with taking and dealing!! I think the park owners could not careless about thing's because if they did they would lock the car parks at night to stop all this antisocial behaviour!! I would not advise anyone bringing young children here as having to see youth's having sex in their car's, drugs, cars racing around the car park's, litter everywhere (Covid hot spot). Even the children's play are area is a hot spot for drug dealing!! If the park got rid of the youth's in t their car's, I think a lot of the problems would go with them?? WOULD NOT ADVISE TAKING YOUR CHILDREN HERE!! STAY AWAY.

A much underapreciated gem, with old colliery towns round one could always get the wrong idea of industrial wasteland, but no not at all visited here many times in past and always found it an oasis the Lake and the scenery redolant of past grandeur, and yet beautiful a wonderful day and enjoyed every minuit with dog passing on business in Ilkeston and decided to pop in spent most of day after before stopping over. Can very much recommend

Located near the town of Heanor in Derbyshire, Shipley Country Park is a sprawling estate of some 700 acres of differing landscapes, including gently rolling hills, woodland areas, leafy pathways, tranquil ponds and reservoirs, wildlife and wildflower meadows, and huge open grassy spaces.  You can walk or ride on some 20 miles of footpaths and bridleways through the park.  Combined with the adjoining Woodside Nature Reserve run by the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, and the Young People’s Forest at Mead, it offers a sizeable space for outdoor enjoyment and pursuits.

It occupies part of the historic Shipley Estate, an ancient manor mentioned in the Domesday Book (1086), when it was recorded as belonging to Gilbert of Ghent, the nephew of William the Conqueror. Then in the 16th century, it developed as a country estate and coal mining area by the influential Miller Mundy family; they built Shipley Hall, and in the 1760s they exploited the coal reserves in the area. In 1948 the demand for coal to revitalise UK industry was so great that the government of the time authorised the large scale expansion of open cast mining, making it possible to tap into seams of coal deemed too close to the surface and therefore unsuitable for conventional methods of deep mining. Such activities desecrated the area, and the once pristine acres of manicured parkland were turned into a moonscape. Restoration of the site began in 1976, resulting in the area of parkland you see today. So the park is relatively new; some areas still require thoughtful and sympathetic regeneration, especially the gaping ugly hole left from the doomed ‘American Adventure’ theme park.

To me, it’s a park where you visit to do a variety of outdoor activities, rather than a park to see things that are particularly beautiful, attractive, historic or noteworthy. There’s quite a few things you can do in the park from, walking, cycling, horse-riding, bird-watching, angling, picnicking, kite flying, jogging, wayfaring, and photography.  There are playground areas for the youngsters, and fitness stations for the more energetic. The park was busy with cyclists (you have to look out for them as they won’t look out for you) and horse riders.
We just enjoyed wandering the leafy paths, wandering by the Mapperley Reservoir where there was a hide for observing water fowl, walking through some meadow areas awash with buttercups, and poking around a couple of small bluebell woods, though the bluebells were on their last. I’m a photographer but didn’t find the park particularly photogenic.

The park has good facilities. The visitor centre is a good place to start your visit.  It has a range of facilities on offer to enable you to enjoy your visit to the full, including a cafe, toilet facilities and information boards. There’s also a cafe located in the pretty Derby Lodge just beyond the Osborne’s Pond. Neither is our favourite for morning tea; the best dining venue by far is the Nutbrook Coffee Shop just beyond Shipley Lake. It’s on Slack Lane, and is a good 30 minute walk from the visitor centre, or a shorter 20 minute walk along Slack Road from Mapperley. I’ve reviewed it separately.

It’s a pleasant spot, but not one that I would recommend you go out of your way for, for overall attractiveness. There’ far more beautiful parks in Derbyshire and adjoining Nottinghamshire than this, but local residents certainly appreciate the regeneration which has taken place to create a space for many to enjoy.

There’s a huge car park via the visitor centre, entered from Slack Lane; you’ll pass through a very unattractive industrial estate to get there. Many paths in the park are suitable for those requiring mobility assistance, though some are quite steep.

This time we did a long walk around the perimeter as far as we could judge it. There was Mapperley reservoir on one side and the view over what was the American adventure park on the other passing ponds and lakes as we went. A very enjoyable few hours.

We started at the cafe with a coffee and large cake - it set us up for the walk.
