Shipley Country Park is a 700 acre site of varied and landscape of wildflower meadows, gentle hills, lakes for fishing and pretty copses that sits across the towns/villages of Heanor, Shipley and Mapperley in the Erewash and Amber Valley regions of Derbyshire, close to the Nottinghamshire border.

The park has 20 miles of quiet, well tended footpaths to wander along, and also incorporates the Nutbrook Trail that runs from Heanor to Long Eaton, and is a very pleasant walk.

There are a few "outside gyms" dotted around the park, which is pretty cool, and there is a nice visitors centre which is most easily accessed from the Slack Lane entrance in Heanor.

The park (or at least part of it) once played host to The American Adventure, a brilliant Theme Park with a Wild West feel. It sadly closed in 2007 and I miss it enormously. It was a big part of my childhood.

The land has now been reclaimed by nature (which is a good thing I suppose) and can be enjoyed by all.

There are mobility scooters available from the visitors centre, so the well tended pathways of the park can be enjoyed by those with limited mobility, whilst refreshment can be sought from the small shop or the Ramblers Cafe (both best accessed from the Slack Lane entrance) or the Derby Lodge Tearoom a bit further away into the park.

The park has a lot of wildlife in it (obviously) and one year people were lucky enough to see Short Eared Owls for quite an extended period of time. You can also see Badgers, Green Woodpeckers and Barn Owls if you keep your eyes peeled.

This is a decent park that I would advise anyone (solo, couples or families/large groups) to visit. Just be aware that the car parks at Slack Lane and over at Mapperley Resevoir are not free. I believe the ones at the main centre are those awful cashless ones too.

Really nice walk. It seemed quite well kept when I went for a walk here. Saw some lovely people. Only thing is, majority of the walk ways are not suitable for a push chair or atleast a struggle with one. I’m just going to take my baby carrier next time 🤷🏼‍♀️ I’ll still go back again.

We had a really good time. Once parked there are numerous paths around the park, map from visitor centre. Trees in array of autumn colours, walk past the resevoir where there are some lovely reflections of the sky, clouds and trees. Good place to walk with friends, children and dogs. Children's play area and outside gym. Cafe next to shop where they ser e huge scones, light meals and child friendly menu

There are three playgrounds, all near the visitor centre entrance:
1) a small fenced toddler park in view of the cafe, two toddler swings, a slide with play table beneath, a couple of other bits, and some very nice fine new woodchip!
2) a fenced playground near-ish the cafe, which is more an adult obstacle course; the 5-8 year olds all had an adult holding them up to reach the high overhead handholds, but enjoyed the balance beams;
3) an open teen playground near the entrance towards the big carpark, this has an obstacle course that's surprisingly high up; watch out for the steep slide flinging you off onto bumpy ground! There's a basket swing, tyre swing and two normal swings on very long chains.
There's plenty of open space, I guess the children aged 5-12 mostly play ball games round here.

The cafe (June 2023) offered a decent range of snacks and lunches as well as drinks and ice creams. We are gluten free, they did have (basic supermarket-type) gluten free bread, so I had a tuna toastie with chips and salad, son had egg, ham (thick cut from proper butcher), chips and peas, and we shared a large gf chocolate brownie. Non-gf family had jacket potato with salad, and a cooked breakfast (normal sausages that contain wheat). See photos for menu.

Huge expanse with decent paths.
Lots of signs, visitors centre and a little cafe/tea room.
Great for dogs and spotting wildlife on the lake.
Mapperley Reservoir is a short walk away and worth a visit.

We enjoy walking around this park, there's lots to see. Today was a shorter visit. It was very cold and started to rain so we wandered about long enough for the cafe to open at 10am. After a latte we went home.

The park is huge and stunning, with something for everyone. The cafe and gift shop / tramper hire staff are amazing. So friendly and helpful. The gift shop staff often know about the trees wildlife and fungi around the park. We absolutely love going here with our dog. You can visit lakes orchards woods fields etc. never been in the tearooms in the middle yet. But really hope to one day.

Being both semi disabled we can walk some of the way round and ride our buggy the rest. Trampers are avalable too from the Visitor Centre
There are quiet, cool, green and shady areas full of interesting trees and history
Lots of memorial seats with beautiful vistas. People have loved this favourite place for many years
Two brilliant cafes where there is always a welcome in spotlessly clean surroundings. The smaller one has a great outside space with birdsong

We meet lots of well behaved dogs here but it's not safe for them or us to swim in the lovely pond where we often see fishermen. Day tickets are available according to the notice
There's bags of space for children to run around and have fun
And there's a gift shop !
Big meadows full of wild grasses and buttercups are mown only by paths for us to explore
The whole place isn't manicured like a city park but kept in excellent fettle by lovely groundsmen.
Well signposted paths so you shouldn't get lost
Lots of different scenery so never boring
There's a disabled only car park where the old Hall once stood with good information boards showing the history of the place. A converted water tower too.
Did I mention the extrordinary ancient trees ?
Can't fault this place
Well done Derbyshire County Council and its staff and Thankyou !
