Brilliant museum, reasonably priced with free parking and a lovely tea room. The exhibit rooms were great - particularly the war planning room.

The Oliver Dowding video is a good place to start to get some context on the Battle of Britain, we loved watching that and understanding more around the human aspect of the BoB.

The guides are passionate and super-knowledgable. My daughter is studying WW2 at school and our guide made sure to point out lots of interesting facts he thought might be useful to her.

We spend around 3-4h in here in total, it was very quiet both in terms of noise and number of people and so gave us a great chance to review everything in detail.

There are interactive elements throughout so 11 year old was also interested throughout. I would highly recommend.

Such an interesting place. Full of history. There is so much to learn. Lots to see and read. Such a lot of amazing work was carried out there in secret by amazing people. Beautiful grounds and building. All the staff we spoke to were friendly and knowledgeable. Cafe is reasonably priced. Sit on the terrace and take in the view. Go for a walk around the grounds. Free parking. Entrance fee is reasonable. Allow about 3 hours minimum. Good for a family visit but not with very small children as they would not appreciate or understand the history. Would visit again.

So many historical displays within a truly historical building. It is set up and managed very well. Very nice cafe there as well. Highly recommend visiting if you have an interest in World War II and the Battle of Britain.

We visited this museum having collected a leaflet from Tangmere (aviation museum) and it is a very worthwhile experience indeed. The museum is housed within the ground and lower ground floors of the mansion that serves as Dowding's HQ in 1940. The setting is immaculate and spectacular. The building is of a similar style to the National Trust property at Cliveden, and also reminded me of Osborne House, Isle of Wight or even one of the 19th buildings at Potsdam near Berlin, an elegant Italianate country house. It is set within a very large gated residential complex with elegant landscaped gardens which below to the residents, but the museum itself has a very lovely ornamental garden and patio to the rear of the main entrance.

The visit commences with a film in Dowding's old office where we get a glimpse of his wartime experience and also the man's humanity, a leader who was careful with the life of his people. Then the tour follows the ground floor rooms, which contain informative and well-laid out displays covering Dowding and his formation in early life and the army, then his preparations ahead of World War II which left Fighter Command in a state of preparation such that it was able to win its victory in 1940.
There are also displays on the pilots, the wider infrastructure such as the Royal Observer Corps and then a very fine reconstruction of the Filter Room which was the room in which the radar signals were analysed to produce information about enemy aircraft in terms of course, position and numbers. It is a very worthwhile experience to take some time here to understand how the team here acted as a large human analogue computer using triangulation from different radar points to determine the position and direction of the enemy so that the defending aircraft were placed-placed to confront them, a bit of a treat for the mathematically inclined.

As well as the WWII history, there is also information on the other residents such as the girls' school and Queen Victoria's aunt who briefly lived here. The post-war life of the site in RAF hands in also covered, and in a nice touch, someone had the presence of mind to make a photo album of the site just as a military were leaving.
As is often the case with many-a-museum, this one is gifted with highly learned and helpful volunteers who took very good care of visitors on the day we visited.
Plenty of nice aviation art decorates the walls as well as some beautiful stained glass at the entrance.

There is a temporary exhibition space on the lower ground floor telling the story of Polish women survivors from WWII when we visited (29 April 2023).

There are no displays upstairs, but visitors can ascend the rather grand staircase which gives a view over the entrance hall so is also worth a look.

There is also a nice cafe service refreshments and light lunches - we were there long enough to have lunch then return later for coffee, and the visit can be rounded off with a stroll around the garden.

Thanks to all the volunteers and staff for a grand day out.

Visited the museum today with my elderly mother who used to live in the area. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit - from the café to the film to the layout and displays. The volunteers were all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. There is plenty of room to move around which Mum found helpful. Also plenty of seating. Th building is beautiful, in a lovely location. All in all, an excellent museum, well worth visiting.

Full marks to the displays, film show and condition of this historic building where the Battle of Britain Bunker was controlled by Lord Dowding. Great self guided tour of the
Rooms and gardens. Good refreshments too. Stewards who were volunteers were very helpful and attentive. Suits all ages and levels of interest.

A small museum really only showing how Dowding's fighter control system worked during the Battle of Britain. Great volunteer guides and lovely grounds.

This is a beautifully set out and carefully presented museum staffed by the most enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers that I have come across. Covering the two lower floors of the house you are given fascinating insights into the planning and execution of the Battle o Britain and the people who carried out the work behind the scenes. Each room tells a part of the story and helps you to understand the importance of Radar in the defeat of the Nazis. In addition there is an excellent cafe with beautiful views of the Italian Gardens. We arrived just after it opened for the day and left not long before it closed and we loved every minute.

What a little gem of a museum! I have lived in the area for many years but never ventured there so when a friend was staying we decided it was time for a visit. We were not disappointed. There is so much to learn about the Battle of Britain and the house itself that we actually didn't have time to do the Plotting room or the Ops room justice so another visit is required! When we were there we saw a Blitz exhibition that was excellent as it was recollections of people who had been children then. As it was a wet November day we couldn't go to the Italian garden or the bunker - definitely another time. And don't miss the cafe. We had soup and sandwiches - they hit the spot and what an improvement on the day before at the Wallace Collection cafe. A case of less is more. Finally, the staff are friendly and informative. There was hardly anyone there on our day out but we are assured it does get busy - it deserves it!
