This was a fun mode of transportation across the Ohio River. We drove to Crittendon County in Kentucky, waited just a couple minutes, and loaded our car on the ferry for a couple minute drive to Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. We were driving from Nashville, and opted to do this rather than continue all the way to southern Illinois on I 24. Fun experience.

We rode the ferry across and back just for fun. There's no charge and it was neat to watch the loading.

It is like an adventure from the past. In Illinois that is not that often an option to take a ferry. Mostly you would use a bridge to go on the other side of the river via car. But not here. There is no bridge in close proximity so this mean of transportation which help local people as well as tourists is an amazing thing. Did I mention it is free of charge!

After visiting Cave in Rock, we took our car across the Ohio River on the free ferry service to Kentucky. 12 miles up the road is Marion, Il. There is a quaint downtown, and the surrounding area has many small Amish home based shops. Makes for a nice day or half day excursion. The ferry is free, underwritten by the Kentucky DOT. No reservation needed, just line up and wait for it. It runs about 15 minutes, perhaps a little longer, for the full trip across and back so the wait is not bad. You are directed on by staff, and you can stay on your car or get out. We stayed in the car as there were lots of flies, but several families with children got out. The Ohio river is perhaps a half mile wide at this point, smooth waters. The times are posted, but again, no fees or registration required. Apparently, if you want to get to the Kentucky side from Illinois driving, it's a 25 mile journey to the closest bridge, so quite a time saver. It apparently has been running since approx 1813 and aids local tourism for both states.
It is the only Illinois access to Kentucky on the Ohio River, and 1 of only 8 remaining ferries. Well worth doing if you have a few hours.

Just drove through, if we had enough time would have liked to have had a look round, looked a good place to explore

Have ridden the ferry all my life and always a pleasant event. There will be await for the ferry if it’s already enroute.

Yes, it is free. It is a service provided by the Kentucky State transportation department.

Not sure. The on-site sign says that the combined vehicle weight limit is 40 tons. You could contact the Ferry Operations number

The ferry is operated 7 days a week. I think it's hours are 6:00 am thru 9:30 pm. It only closes under adverse conditions like high water and ice as far as I know.

The hours of operation are 7AM-9:45PM. They operate 7 days a week, year round. The only time they ever close is during bad weather. There is no fee for this ferry. I hope this helps!
