This LSU AgCenter experiment station has several horticultural gardens including a large rose garden. It is also the home of the Rural Life Museum.

We had some time to kill before check-in at our hotel. After looking online this looked like a great place to spend a few hours. When we arrived there were quite a few cars at the main building. We grabbed a map and continued on our way. We didn't have time to see everything, so we decided to focus on the Windrush Gardens, which was beside the museum.
We parked and entered the museum to get tickets for the gardens. The price was trivial. We then headed for the gardens. This is where it all went down hill. We spent about thirty minutes to an hour wondering around aimlessly. We only saw one sign indicating which paths to take. Most of the paths were not well maintained and we questioned if we'd somehow managed to lose our way. Everywhere was muddy. It was simply a bad experience and not what we expected at all. On the other hand, we saw some nice statues and some beautiful nature. That didn't make up for lack of directions and unmaintained paths.
Maybe we should have done the museum instead of the gardens. Either way, we were disappointed in the Windrush Gardens.

We enjoyed our stroll through the roses and along the Mosaic Boardwalk and the Black Swamp. Well maintained.

Spent the day there @ a wedding -- lovely, lovely -- grounds are fantastic-- lots to see and do for for a family or couple -- brig a picnic lunch and enjoy the day

The garden's have several distinct areas. The rose garden had been affected by the heat, but the tropical gardens were loving every humid degree. The New Guinea impatiens were beautiful, The children;s gardens included climbers for extra fun. There is a tree and woods hiking trail, but the warm humid day made us decide to put that off until another day, There is also a visitor's center. The LSU Rural Life Museum is in another section of the property so there is plenty to keep a visitor busy for a day.

We were more interested in the nature trails and didn't visit the museum. The trails were hot due to mostly non-shaded paths compared to the Bluebonnet Nature Center (Which we adored - heavily shaded and well maintained paths). Our children much preferred the latter. The close proximity to the highway was also a disadvantage as the road noise was pretty loud. We did enjoy reading each sign identifying trees/plants and the flower/rose garden which were misting at the time. Our kids enjoyed the cool down (age 4 & 7). The children's play area up front was well kept with adorable playground equipment.

We found this green space with such easy access to the interstate to be a welcomed respite from car travel. The trails are for the most part shaded in the early afternoon but prepare because this is Louisiana in July. Take your water and wear good shoes because the trail is gravel and sand not paved. We explored the native flora and fauna and easily spent 1 1/2 hours hiking. There are gardens, a visitor’s center and agricultural museum but alas we had no time to see them. No fees! Easy parking! Hike away!

This is one of the best outdoor/indoor museums in the country. It is a hidden gem. The property contains and Overseers home, slave cabins, an outdoor kitchen, sugar cane processing, black smith's shop, and much more. The indoor museum has artifacts from the early 18C to the Industrial Revolution. This is a must see visit.
