1st Saturday of 2021 beautiful sunny and mid-50s degrees 5 mile hike
2021年1月
This was a beautiful 1st Saturday of the year 5-mile hike through this marsh refuge. It is about 2.5 miles out to Bayou Lacombe (a picture of the bayou at the end of the trail is attached), and then 2.5 back. The first 1/4 mile is a boardwalk through a marsh area (three pictures attached).

Two typical pictures of the majority of the trail are also attached.

About mid-way through the 2.5 miles to Bayou Lacombe is a look-out spot out across Lake Pontchartrain ( two pictures, one looking south and one west are attached).

Views of the parking lot at the trailhead with signage are attached.

This spot is just a little further east of Fontainebleau State Park off 190.

Great Place to Get Close to Nature - or Launch a Boat
2020年4月
Boy Scout Road Boardwalk: The boardwalk is a nice, well maintained boardwalk loop through 1/2 mile of Cypress Bayou going from the parking lot along the bayou and connecting to Boy Scout Road a short distance from the parking lot. It is a really nice walk and get quite a lot of visitors. There are stops along the way with informational signage about the swamp area. The location is between Slidell and Lacombe, LA. Take Transmitter Road South of Highway 190 to Pacquet Road. Take Pacquet Road West to Boy Scout Road; there is good signage.

Boat Launch: The boat launch location is between Slidell and Lacombe, LA. Take Transmitter Road South of Highway 190 to Pacquet Road. Take Pacquet Road West to Sapsucker Road; Sapsucker Road is a gravel road and goes 1/2 mile back to the boat launch. No gasoline motors are permitted, but electric motors (e.g. trolling motors) are. There is good parking and a good launch into vegetation covered water. The boat lane is arrow straight and goes into Lake Ponchartrain though, of course, one can also go off to the side and into the marsh. It is about 2 miles to the lake and this boat lane is straight as an arrow.

Some choices for outdoor recraetion
2020年1月
Some walking trails, kayaking/canoeing birding. The refuge is kinda scattered out and not really well marked with directions from the main highway. Nice visitor center, but only open Thursday, Friday Saturday. The "film" by Teddy Roosevelt is an interesting presentation.

Lovely walk

What a beautiful walk. Walk among the camelias and the azaleas. Spring and late fall are the best. Sat by the pond and watched the turtles. Peaceful, quiet and lovely.

Great Birding

We stopped here for hiking and birding. Had a great time and a successful birding morning. Visitors center was closed, due to the shutdown, so I can’t offer a review of that.

Could not find the entrance, did not see a sign, internet sketchy

We took I-10 east from Slidell, took the Google map exit. The map showed that the National Wildlife Refuge was on the left, but houses were on the right. I did not see a sign referencing the refuge. So I proceeded to the Bayou Sausage refuge.

Great place to visit

Great place to visit with family. The rangers that work there are so helpful. Wild Things is one of my favorite events to go to on the refuge which is held in October.

Lovely outdoor nature walk within easy day trip distance from New Orleans
2017年12月 • 家庭
We walked the Boy Scout Trail - which as other reviewers noted is a little hard to find. Glad we kept pressing on once the GPS told us we were in the NWR. There is a sign for the Boy Scout Trail if you are coming in from the Slidell side.

Visiting in "winter" is pretty interesting in the subdued landscape. Definitely want to return during migratory bird season. The board walk is really well maintained and is likely amazing when migration is underway.

The Boy Scout "trail" which is really a gravel/dirt road is a totally pleasant 4 mile round trip walk.

This would only be rated a "3" as a walk/hike elsewhere, but hey, it's SE Louisiana.

For those not used to NWR's, there are no facilities (restrooms or trash) at the parking lot.

Easy Hike
2017年11月 • 好友
I went to Big Branch on Thanksgiving Day, and it was a lovely, easy walk on Boy Scout Road. There are nice lookout points, and the entire walk is scenic. There is a small section of boardwalk, followed by a 4-mile round trip walk on a path out to Bayou Lacombe. I would recommend this for those looking to get outdoors without doing anything too strenuous.
