Collection of old buildings
2018年5月 • 夫妻情侣
Collection of 7 old buildings, only one of which really has anything worth seeing. The Hutchinson home was moved from the Caspiana area. There are a few interesting artifacts and the family's story is well-chronicled. If you have the time, visit the Heritage Village in Benton instead.

Hidden gem for history buffs
2018年3月 • 家庭
Located on the LSU campus, fenced off, so MUST call and make appointment. There are 7 buildings to tour, took about 1 hours. We had a great private tour and the history was great, the buildings vintage and authentic. Parking right in front - free. Kids liked it too. Was worth our time and effort to get there. Would do it again.

Take a trip in time

This little collection of plantation houses is so neat to check out. I went here on field trips when I was in school and still remember how cool I thought it was. I now am able to take my children to see them and they love it.

A step back in time
2015年5月 • 好友
This little known gem is a great collection of seven plantation structures, two of which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (they came from Caspiana Plantation just south of Shreveport). The center is located on the northeast corner of campus at Louisiana State University Shreveport and it serves as a hands on laboratory for students/teachers at the school. It also hosts groups, both community and tourists, but due to limited staff you must call to set up a guided tour. A guided tour will leave you with a taste of what life was like for the early settlers and farmers in the Northwest Louisiana region between the 1830's and 1930's. According to their website the center is open year round from 9am to 12pm Tuesday through Friday but I'd recommend calling ahead just to make sure.

History in the making

it is nice to be able to see what it was like to live in the pioneer days in Shreveport. Not alot to see but it is still history and knowledge that one will have to know what it was like living in that time period.

Annual Pioneer Day (usually Last Saturday in October)
2012年10月 • 家庭
The Pioneer Heritage Center is a small collection of historic buildings on the campus of LSU-Shreveport. It is fenced in and you need an appointment to get in, 364 days out of the year. If you are interested in a private tour (which we haven't done, but might be interesting) you can contact them at 318-797-5339, or email pioneer@lsus.edu.

What we have done each of the past several years, is attend the Pioneer Day. This is a unique experience that is offered only once per year. It is generally the last Saturday in October, and it's great for families like mine with school-aged kids. Not only do you see the buildings and artifacts, but volunteers in period costumes turn the place into a bit of a trip back in time to when this country was being settled. There are, of course the houses, musicians, a blacksmith making horseshoes and other things out of metal, a church, there are generally some women demonstrating spinning and weaving, a general store, doctor's office with "operating room", a group of civil-war re-enactors sometimes brings their cannon and my personal favorite, a group of dutch oven cooks prepare dishes to taste over open fires. Last year there was a falconry demonstration with live birds. It's really a neat experience for the family. I don't recall it being particularly expensive, something like $3-5 per person, which includes the food samples.
