Beautiful! A must-see if you're around Bailey Island. If you don't want to do a ton of climbing, that's possible- there is a dirt/gravel trail that you can follow (watch out for poison ivy, though!!) that will give you a wonderful view of the waves crashing onto the rocks. Otherwise, wear sneakers (not flip-flops or you will break one or both ankles) and be prepared to do a bit of climbing and you will be able to spend a good bit of time exploring the rocks and watching the waves. Free parking by the church. It's hard to miss the parking.

My husband and I went to the Islands for a romantic trip and this and Cedar Beach were the highlights. Beautiful, and powerful. Great place to meditate for awhile.

Hard to find parking. Not much of a hike. Pretty but very limited space. Feel bad for the residents surrounding the area.

This was our first introduction to the Maine coastline and Boy! was it impressive! We had fun climbing on the rocks, watching the ducks in the surf and listening to the waves crash on the rocks. We came back at hightide just to see how different the view was. Also it's a pretty ride on Mountain Road to get there.

Giant’s Stairs 4

During our 9-day trip through all 16 counties of Maine, we saw a lot! Preparation for the vacation included significant online research, scouring every top 10 points of interest list within the state, as well as top 10 lists of the greatest hidden gems Maine has to offer. We compiled quite the itinerary.

Interestingly, Giant’s Stairs appeared on exactly NONE of these lists. This is an opportunity for you to escape the crowds and leave the tourists behind if you choose to go. It was actually while looking at Google Maps, combing through the tips of each peninsula on Maine’s wildly jagged coastline, that I came across a label on noting “Giant’s Stairs.” What could this be?

So we drove 30 minutes south of the adorable town of Bath, all the way down to picturesque Bailey Island, crossing the world’s only cribstone bridge, slithering on windy roads to the edge of the continent, only to pass right by the destination without noticing! After hitting the southern terminus of Washington Avenue and backtracking a few feet, we noticed a small sign shrouded in shrubbery at GPS coordinates 43.723504 N, 69.995267 W, pointing the way to Giant’s Stairs. We took one of the limited parking spots along the road and began our short walk.

Following the narrow path, you’ll weave your way through dense flora toward the sound of crashing waves before emerging atop a substantial outcropping of basalt and quartz rock. Here, you’ll find the ocean powerfully battering the shore at high tide, with skinny dirt paths meandering through the dense undergrowth perched along the seaside cliffs. This is a hidden gem worth the effort, but check the Internet for high tide before you arrive to maximize your wonderment!

Beautiful coastal walk along the edge of large rocks of interesting compositions, while watching the surf come in around them. Best to wear sturdy shoes, wear sun protection, and watch out for poison ivy. Parking for possibly 10 cars, best to go as early as possible in the morning for parking and to avoid crowds even during the week.

We day tripped her on a cloudy cool fall day with a little fog as well. We found the Giant Stairs trail, wen you round the bend (church on the left where there are a few spots to park) to the right, there was room for at least 15 cars on the street to park. The paths are right there that leads to the ocean ledge/view etc. Its a short one. Go and bring a snack/lunch and sit by the water. The path also goes in front of private homes but be respectful when and if you do go by them. Its a nice little stop to take in the view and the gorge where the "steps" are. There were people eating lunch on them so trying to get a photo without them was impossible but still took it. Great little stop while on Baileys Island.

This an easy flat 1 mile round trip. Lovely ocean views the entire way. Many places to safely walk onto the rocks for a closer view of the staircase and ocean. This was a relaxing walk to end our day.

I agree with previous reviewers, photos here or on google just does not do this place justice. There is just something magical about coming here. I can sit for an hour on the rocks contemplating life. Scaling the rocks to get closer to the waves is also a fun thing to do if you’re careful. It’s worth the drive every single time even if it’s a relatively small area compared to other parks, trails and beaches. Love, Love, Love it. The drive to reach it alone is beautiful.
