We could only be in Bangor for a few hours, and opted to take a tour with the historical society. So glad we did. Our guide “Fanny Jones” is a wealth of knowledge and took us on an amazing tour of what life would have been in the sordid underbelly of life in the late 1800s. We really enjoyed our time on the tour. If we had more time we would have done another tour. Worth the nominal price (we did a private tour).

Highly Recommend Bangor Historical Society's Dark HistoryTours of Mt. Hope Cemetery. These are offered during October, annually. Now need to join their Civil War tour and other offerings.
Didn't realize how much local and national history is actually tied to Mt Hope Cemetery.
The Tour Guide was very knowledgeable and engaging. The weather totally cooperated by being drizzly.
Do seriously bring a flashlight, you need to be aware of where your feet are going.
There is a fee for the guided tours. However, Mt Hope is a gorgeous place to walk and explorer WITHOUT your dog. No pets.

What an interesting and informed visit we had here. It was more than we could have ever imagined! We learned so much about the history of Maine, Bangor, and the first families in such vivid detail, so enjoyable.

When we were in our hotel in Bangor, we saw the advertisement and decided to check out that small museum in downtown.
It was not easy to find but worth to visit.
You need to call the doorbell to get in.
The director will give you very informative tour around the house and you can see lots of artifacts and listen to the stories about the people who used to live in that house and about Bangor 150+ years ago.
It would not take even an hour but will fill you with some good memories.

Visitors should make sure they look in the drawers of photos upstairs. They will get a tour of Bangor history, at least from the advent of the camera. The house was a private residence with a history of its own and that is apt to pique interest in the families of the city.

I've been interested in this Museum every time I have driven by. Very unassuming. I figured it couldn't be that cool. But boy was I wrong! A very well preserved museum with a rich history. Check it out if you're in the area!

The place is an average museum. It was once the house of an ex mayor and was built in 1835. It has some lovely paintings and guns. But nothing fascinating. You can skip this if you don't have time.
