Great tour - Roxanne is an amazing docent! Her knowledge of Chamberlain’s life is unparalleled, and her ability to convey important context is exceptional.

Nice stop for anyone interested in the history of Chaimberlain. Very good tour guide that gave us a great amount of information on the house as well as the college. Tour takes about 45 minutes, but there are some staircases you have to navigate, so it is not a good tour for those who cannot go up-and-down stairs.

Our Docent was amazing, gracious and informative. Despite a long day of taking tours through the house she was cheerful and patient with our equally tired kids. Learned so much about JLC and the people who lived in the house and visited over the years. Thank you so much! Be prepared to buy some books if you’re a Civil War fan—the gift shop is fully stocked with excellent books and reasonable prices. So glad we stopped at this site. Thanks again!

Knowledgeable and friendly staff - wonderful house and artifacts. My husband and I are both history nerds and there were several stories we hadn’t heard before. Well worth the trip!
Check ahead for tour start times! We just missed one and spent 40 minutes walking the Bowdoin campus to kill time before the next one started.

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the Joshua Chamberlain Museum. The staff were excellent. As history buffs, we really appreciated our detailed tour. Our docent was very knowledgable and catered it to our interests. Afterwards we took a stroll around town as Bowdoin College, the Harriet Beecher Stowe House, and Chamberlain's grave are all nearby. All in all, it was an afternoon well spent.

The docent was very knowledgeable and the house had a lot of interesting artifacts. Well worth the time. It was a little too much information on the Civil War. There was not enough time to go into the war in depth, but the information about the house was interesting.

Roxanne guided us through the house and it’s contents. She did a fine job. She was knowledgeable and engaging. I highly recommend this short stop in Brunswick Maine. As a civil war nut I truly enjoyed it.

Fascinating look at the life and home of a Civil War general and later state governor and college president. Even if Joshua Chamberlain had not been such an impressive figure in history, his home would still be worth a visit, as the building is truly unique. We really enjoyed our tour and the museum staff was absolutely wonderful. After the tour we took the short walk to the cemetery where he is buried and walked through the grounds of Bowdoin College across the street.

We went into the museum but had missed a tour and another wasn't for an hour. We couldn't wait that day so the docent told us to come back the next day at the time of the tour. We did and the museum was closed! Very disappointing. We eventually did get inside to tour the museum and it was very special to us being civil war buffs and "students" of J. Chamberlain history.

My husband loved hearing more history of this Civil War and Maine hero. The museum is working hard to restore this beautiful old home but it still is rough in places. You have to have a tour guide to go through it. The guide we had was very old. He spoke slowly and softly and shuffled his way from room to room and sat down. He didn’t know answers to some of our questions. Needed more enthusiasm. But the house held interesting artifacts like his horse’s saddle, bullet that injured him, his sword, uniform buttons and other things.

Seasonal. After Columbus day they are only open Friday and Saturday 10 to 4 and Sunday 1 to 4. Close for the year on November 13th.

I have a 20th Maine hat and today I wore it at Gettysburg. There were two guides at Little and Big Round Top and they loved the hat and asked where I got it. Do you sell 20th Maine hats, mugs, shirts, etc.?
