We were intrigued that this historic site is interpreted in both New Brunswick and Maine. You definitely get the sense that the National Park Service wanted to our do the Canadians, but which they managed to do. The island where the colony was situated in 1604 is not accessible, so there are a series of interpretative panels and slightly larger than life sculptures and a sculpture showing the layout of the colony based on archival and archaeological infor!ation. The one hiccup -- panels misspell the name of the colony leader. But still very informative

Stopped here on our way to St. Andrews from Lubec. We were pleasantly surprised. Short, interpretive walk to view the island was well worth the effort. Ranger Meg at the visitor center was fantastic. She was all about the amount of time we had and maximizing our experience. We very much enjoyed this historic, learning experience, particularly due to Ranger Meg.

While driving along the very northern section of Route 1, just south of Calais, Maine, we stopped at the mainland Saint Croix Island International Historic Site to view the actual island which is located in the St. Croix River between Maine and New Brunswick.
We enjoyed walking the interpretive trail down towards the river and the view. Along the path were impressive statues and placards summarizing the history. Near the river, there is a 3D model of the site which showed this very early French settlement. This original colony did not last in this location but later removed to Nova Scotia where it survived. There is also a small but informative Visitor's Center. For history buffs, I would recommend this as a site to see while travelling in this area. Also, if you are interested in Samuel de Champlain's exploits, this is a good spot to see.

We stopped by when we knew the visitors' center would be open and were glad we had planned because the park ranger intern was so welcoming and excited to share her knowledge about the little park. The center has a small gift shop and a few exhibits on the walls, including a new one about petroglyphs. From the visitors' center there is a short walk to a path that will tell you the story of Saint Croix Island which you can see across the water. Statues dot the path to help teach you the story about Samuel Champlain and the Native Americans who saved him and his party. The visit lasted only about 20 minutes. Fog was rolling in while we stood there, but when we passed by two hours later, the sun was shining across the bay. If you have time, cross over to Canada and visit the Canadian site regarding St. Croix.

This is a small museum and walking trail that tells about the historic settlement on Saint Croix Island (Although you can't go out to the island). It is worth the stop if you are nearby. Does have junior ranger activities. Only takes about 1/2 hr to hour to go through.

I am not sure what I expected when I visited. it ended up a quick visit as it was getting dark. The center was closed, and I walk around for a bit. to get more, one would need to spend a lot more time reflecting on the history.

This was a fascinating site to visit. The visitor center is beautiful and the staff was entertaining and educational. Only open part of the year so I was glad that we made it before it closes for the winter. Walked along the statue park and spent time along the water's edge. Serene and a lovely spot to think about our national history.

Great National Monument to the Saint Croix Island area with its distinct history. The Saint Croix River is an International boundary between Washington County, Maine and Charlotte County, Province of New Brunswick, Canada.

Do I need a passport to go to the island?

The only way to go to the island is by boat. You can kayak over as my son did, or canoe. No you don't need a passport. However, they will watch you carefully to make sure you just go to the island and return. You are not allowed to go over to Canada. You would get in big trouble.
