I was looking forward to this stop on our road trip for months. Of course, it had to be on a very rainy evening, so our amazing photo stop turned dreary. It was still an excellent stop. We wandered up the trail a ways to get the lighthouse with the cliff below. We also watched a cruise ship sail past, which added an interesting element to some of the pictures. Hopefully your weather is a lot nicer than ours.

Great day, great vistas, beautiful sights and sounds. Large park with lots to do and see but the main attraction is the lighthouse. Did not do the museum or walk the grounds, but would definitely do if we had more time!

This lighthouse is a must see if in the Portland area! The grounds are gorgeous and highly recommend taking the short walking trails on either side so come wonderful views of the keeper’s house and light.
We did not go in the little museum as you could not go up into the light.
Free parking onsite too!
If you have time, stop for lunch at the food truck - Bite into Maine - in the parking lot. Worth it!

The Portland Head Light is definitely a must see when visiting Portland. It is a beautiful picturesque lighthouse. The views are magnificent. There are nice pathways to walk along the coastline. Not to be missed!

Spectacular views. It was very windy the day we visited with huge waves breaking on the rocks. So many places to take great photos. Take the cliff walk as far as you like to really see some good views. Explore the Fort remains for some interesting history. The Italian coffee truck on the property was excellent and hot drinks were welcome. Worth a few hours stop.

My wife and I knew we had to go see the iconic Maine lighthouse. It did not disappoint. You cannot go inside the lighthouse or the home there unfortunately. However, I understand why. The view from where the lighthouse stands and the surrounding cliffs, makes you understand why it was put there in the first place. The view is spectacular watching the waves crash on the rocks. I am very glad we went and it is worth the visit.

A beautiful setting - and lots of folks enjoying a nice walk around the light. There is a large parking area about a block up the hill from the light - and perhaps 3 handicap spaces down near the light itself. This is a great stop on your way to/from Portland!

Our Silver Shadow Shore Excursion was Portland Highlights. When we arrived at the starting point for our bus tour of Portland, Maine, we noticed several “Florida Tour” buses. Once on the bus our tour guide, Bob, introduced himself and the driver Ty. He explained that Ty just came in from Florida, had a great safety record of driving a bus but had never driven in Portland. Plus Bob, shared that he was 91 years old. He bragged about the healthy climate and more of Portland. It was a very good bus tour with only a couple of missed turns. Bob knows the area and has great stories about the various places we drove past. The bus ride took us to several areas of the city, so we could both understand its history, its culture and its growth. The primary stop was the Portland Head Light. A beautiful lighthouse with a stone exterior on the rocky bluffs with a museum and adjacent to the remains of Fort William. We took time to walk over to the house adjacent to the lighthouse to take in the views. There was a museum there but we didn’t visit it. We took some great photos of the Portland Head Lamp, an old lighthouse on an island behind it, and the scenic area there. Then we viewed the storyboards about Fort William. Additionally, the area here is very nice for walking and enjoying the parklike atmosphere.

This is a stunning lighthouse, well-organized to handle the crowds. It even offers a small gift shop and several food trucks. The vistas are magnificent. If you enjoy seeing a lighthouse, this is among the very best.

If you are in Maine and are short on time and want to visit a lighthouse, go here. The views are beautiful. The lighthouse has a museum and gift shop and the ocean views are great too.

How to photograph the lighthouse before sunrise and after sunset? The lighthouse is closed, I am planning to do astrophotography. Can anyone guide me the locations?

I believe there was a beach area in a nearby neighborhood where you could view the lighthouse from a distance, but I do not know of they close it off at certain times either. Otherwise, try contacting the museum and asking someone there if they grant permission for such things.

For sure... Gate closes at dusk. You can see the light house and walk around the park all you want.

Planning to head out here today....is there a paved bike path around here or within Fort Williams area? Wasn't sure if it was worth bringing bikes out there or not?

You could bike there, but it really is more enjoyable to walk. It is not large enough to have trails for biking.
