This was a wonderful experience for the bioluminescence alone. The tour itself was not enjoyable, as the guides gave out shockingly incorrect information. It was also very frustrating to have the variety of experience levels, so we spent a very long time trying to get into the water at all, and the guides were constantly yelling at everyone in a very frazzled manner. Be prepared to stay more than an hour later than the set time to clean up for them. Lower your expectations if you plan on going and only go if this is your only way to see the bioluminescence, which is worth it.

We took an evening Bioluminescence Tour and it was great. We had only a little kayaking experience, but after their intro felt confident about going out onto the bay. The groups were small - about a dozen kayaks per guide - and the guides took good care of us. In addition to taking us to where we could provoke and observe the bioluminescence (think millions of teeny tiny underwater firefly lights when the water is disturbed), the guide also presented a nice tour of the night sky with a laser pointer.
This was one of the highlights of our vacation, a wonderful and memorable adventure!.

This was one of the highlights of our trip up north. Absolutely wonderful experience seeing the bioluminescence! Itsell was our guide, and she was extremely knowledgeable and was made for this job! We appreciated the education that we received prior to going out on the water, and she also taught us so much while we were out exploring! Even though we had a pretty bright moon the night that we went, she found plenty of places for us to see the incredible bioluminescence! 10/10 recommend experiencing this if you are in the area!

We would highly recommend anyone that enjoys the water and wants an ultimate experience to take the bioluminescence tour. Like fireflys dancing in the water and equally as memorable was the night sky of many star constellations, shooting stars and the milky way. Our guide and owner, Karen, pointed out many interesting objects and constellations in the night sky with her laser light beam as our six tandem kayaks rafted together. Her knowledge of the bioluminescence was captivating along with her many tips and stories shared of the area and her trips.
We also enjoyed a morning kayak with Jake from the same company paddling away with even more useful and interesting knowledge and kayaking skills from both adventures even though we own kayaks and kayak often.
Castine is a beautiful, small historic town-like stepping back in time 30 years.

Located in a quaint town in Maine is this little gem of an adventure. We took the biolumenescence tour at night in the Castine bay. The guide was excellent and allowed us to have an incredible time on the water. The pictures posted by people online don't do this justice. This is a must to see for yourself!
Our guide made us feel comfortable in the kayaks and made sure we are wll set prior to setting off on our adventure. She provided alot of local details and provided a plethora of information about what we were experiencing.

Karen was a fantastic guide. Her instruction was so informative and helpful. I was worried about kayaking in the open waters but Karen’s instructions were easy to follow and excellent. I would highly recommend Karen and her staff was extremely helpful also.

Karen and Jake were fantastic guides for our night bioluminescent kayak tour across the bay. They took the time to instruct, encourage and reassure our entire group. The weather made the evening a challenge but our safety was well guarded. Fantastic glow in the water and definitely an unforgettable and unique experience. Well worth it!

How lucky my family and I were to stumble upon Castine Kayak Adventures! We booked the 1pm guided tour and the Bioluminescent evening tour. Karen was just simply amazing as our guide. Her knowledge and positive attitude was so incredibly helpful. She really took the time to get to know people, their abilities and to educate about skill sets and our gorgeous location. I had not kayaked in years and really learned a lot from her. I am so thankful for Karen and her time. Please do not miss the bioluminescent tour!!! Just simply one of my treasured family memories now and magical. Being able to experience it in nature along with Karen and her vast knowledge was amazing. I was a bit nervous, but so pleased beyond belief. It is worth it all. Thank you Karen / Castine Kayak Adventures.

Karen (the owner) is a great instructor. We felt very comfortable kayaking through choppy water and really enjoyed our time out on the sea. She was also very accommodating when we needed to switch our day. This is a small business so there may be delays in communication but when we finally spoke, she was very helpful.
Highly recommend.

When do I schedule for this wonderful nighttime bioluminescent kayak adventure as well as the a boralis light show in the sky? Definetly looks like something I would seriously enjoy. Thank You Janet
Hi! You can book right through our website or call us at 207-866-3506 and we can help you choose dates! We do list on our calendar best nights which are plenty, every 2 weeks for 2 week durations. We run the trip nightly and even see bioluminescence when the moon is out. Weather is usually cooperative but it's always good to be flexible! We look forward to sharing it with you! Kayak Karen

For folks who have no experience, are the kayaks difficult to keep upright? Regarding the night tours, is it difficult to stay with your group? What clothing would be recommended in early June? Thanks!
With a reasonable level of fitness and mobility you should be able to learn to kayak comfortably.

I believe they have tandem kayaks available. Call first! They are also very patient, move at the pace of the slowest paddler, and offer a great 'how to get going' lesson!
