This was more than we could have asked for in our first sea kayaking experience. My sister and I reserved to go out for a 3 hour nature paddle. We were the only 2 scheduled for this trip which we found out when we got there. I ws pleasantly surprised that even though it was just the 2 of us that the trip wasn't cancelled. So right there -- I mean that's good business. Our guide Mitch was wonderful. My sister and I both can have a little social anxiety when meeting someone for something like this and usually are happy enough to blend in with the crowd, however, Mitch was just so kind and laid back that we instantly felt at ease with him and were then excited that we would have this private tour! I went with my gut when choosing this place from ones that were closer to camden which is where we were staying. This one was 45 minutes away if I remember correctly. Anyway, my intuition paid off. After letting Mitch know that this would only be my 4th time in a kayak and my first time in a "sea kayak" and that my sister was a kayak virgin he suggested the tandem kayak for better stability. He helped us with our life jackets and the spray skirt or whatever it's called. He taught me how to steer with the rudder, which was a first for me. It took me quite a while to get my body to listen to my brain with that lol, but Mitch was always so encouraging and I never felt stupid. You can tell he genuinely enjoys being out in nature. We saw a porpoise and we even had a seal pop up from the water only yards away. Also saw a bald eagle. He pointed out other birds as well which was great because I love birds. He took pics of us and texted them to me later that day. Recommended a great place for lunch! He's just a nice human, you know what I mean? Instantly felt comfortable in his presence. And we felt safe we his instructions and with his wealth of knowledge and experience. If we go back to Maine sometime, and I hope we will, I am definitely doing this again with Midcoast Kayak. Another nice thing about his nature cruise is that it's 3 hours, where a lot of others were either 2 or 4 hours. 4 sounded a bit tiring and 2 hours just isn't long enough in my opinion (did 2 hr tours in Florida and it goes so fast) when you factor in getting set up, so 3 hours was perfect. Spent maybe 20-30 minutes getting everything set and ready and getting in the kayaks and then just a lovely paddle. Anyway, choose Midcoast Kayak for all of the above reasons!!

We’ve rented a tandem kayak from Midcoast twice now to go down the Darmiscotta. They are always so accommodating and friendly. Mitch set us up with a dry bag as well as everything else to make our trip the best. The kayaks are comfortable and the best way to go down the river. Thank you so much again.

Mitch made my dreams come true. I have always wanted to multiday sea kayak camp, and decided to take a last minute trip Friday before. I called 3-5 outfitters and no one was willing to accommodate us. Except for Mitch. Even though Mitch had his hands totally full, he went out of his way to help us out Friday evening to make sure we were ready to go Saturday morning . He gave us a walk through on all possible itineraries, and even let us use maps, pfds, wet suits and dry bags. We had the most perfect weekend in muscongus bay at beautiful islands with periwinkles, seals, and beautiful birds and it wouldn’t have been possible without Mitch and his team at midcoast kayak. Thanks for making our dreams come true Mitch and midcoast kayak!

We rented kayaks that launched from the dock, the launch was easy. The equipment was right. The time on the water was awesome. The return to the dock was trying - it’s a floating dock with a rope to help you roll out of the Kayak. No staff in sight. If our group was young and fit it wouldn’t have been an issue but it’s just not suitable (nor does it feel secure or safe) to exit for older knees, backs, etc. Two of us very nearly ended up in the water! We won’t try that again!

Fantastic activity in the wonderful river town of Damariscotta. Easy online reservations or walk-ins. Helpful staff launched us on the river efficiently and safely. We rented for 2 hours and had the chance to see a wide array of shore birds, oyster farming in action and the beautiful houses. Best of all, we could go at our own pace, and when we got tired, we just headed back. Highly recommended.

Connections with the tour guide. We had Mitch last year for a different midcoast kayaking tour. We did the wildlife one. This time we did the oyster tour. It was great to converse with Mitch. He is always able to find some connection with someone. For me, he used to live in the same town I live. He also was very knowledgeable and fun. This is going to be our tradition. Everytime my bf and I go to our cottage in Maine, we'll be booking a tour!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Hard to find an outdoors activity that ALL 11 members of our family vacationing together will equally enjoy...but we found it in Damariscotta, ME at Midcoast Kayak!!
Mitch was patient and welcoming and got us all outfitted and oriented on the river very efficiently...the highlight was spotting the eagle's nest and 2 eagles perched on the trees nearby on Hog(g) Island...can't wait to re-visit and next time I would opt for a longer trip.

The focus was on customer safety. The guide was knowledgeable and personal and made all the guests feel comfortable.

Very easy to rent the kayaks right next to Schooner Landing, an outdoor seafood restaurant (which incidentally serves very bland food). The kayaking itself is OK - you just paddle around the river harbor and look at moored boats and oyster hatcheries (we didn't have a tour guide). Next time I'd like to try sea kayaking closer to the ocean. Warning: getting out of the kayak at the end can be tricky so make sure someone is there to give you a hand.

We kayaked here in 2008 as newlyweds and now in 2022 with our 9 year old. Both experiences were very positive. Good customer service and excellent equipment and instruction done in a relaxed and yet professional way. Thank you!

Hi! My mom is 76 and has kayaked before but would feel safer if a guide was in a tandem with her. Is this possible on a trip?

Hi there:
Thank you for that question. Our lead guides need to be prepared to conduct any necessary rescues very quickly, so they need to be in a single kayak. With that said, in this instance I could have your Mom in a tandem with an apprentice guide. These guides are trained, but not yet ready to be lead guides. If that is acceptable to you please let us know and remind my staff that I have suggested this arrangement so we can add that to the reservation. Thanks, Mitch
