A nice path with pleasant variations in terrain and views. Children will enjoy building fairy houses at designated places. And yes, there is a cliff with beautiful views. Children need to pay attention where they walk to.

The trail starts out very easily, but gets tougher, which is why it's rated "moderate". There are beautiful views much of the way.

This trail had some lovely views and the hike through the mostly pine forest was very peacful. The trail is well marked. There are lots of roots and a walking pole would have been helpful but we managed to do ok without it, taking our time on the steeper sections.

Our party of seven (ranging in age 9 to 71) managed to reach the precipice and it was quite satisfying. The 2+ miles of trial varied in skill level for the amateur hiker. Some areas were flat and breezy while others were marred w/ inclines and dips covered w/ mature tree roots to navigate. Few of us, including our 9 year old leader, found walking sticks to steady us on our lovely hike. Take breaks and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination. The fairytale details and rules posted made for a fun twist for those interested.
Don’t forget to apply sunscreen and insect repellent before you head into the wilderness. As you make your way in deep, the mosquitos are rampant.
Don’t feel weighed down so, travel light. All you really need are a hat, plenty of water, and good walking shoes.
Happy hiking!

The Cliff Trail isn't an easy trail but, if you take your time, it is doable. We enjoyed the trail for the natural beauty and the challenge of the hike. Be sure to bring bug repellent (mosquitos were bad in places) and water. We are in our mid-60s and I have a bum left knee. The hike took us a less than 2 hours. We stopped often to enjoy our surroundings. One word of caution...there are a ton of tree roots on the ground. We were extremely cautious due to the roots. There are lovely views along the way. Enjoy!

My husband and I are moderate walkers and found this a good level of challenge. Not too steep, but a walking stick is definitely helpful. I would recommend starting from the town parking lot following the cliff trail signs(not the route over the bridge). This takes you in reverse order around the trail but you can get some lovely views from the cliffs then take the cut off route back to cut some distance off.
That way you hit the flat part of the trail coming back when you might be more tired.

Exceptional view from the top! Through the years, my family and I have hiked the Cliff Trail, but it’d been a few years. We’d always taken the short trail up and back from the recycling center. Parking is now provided at the town office nearby and apparently there is a cut- through path to the entrance to the Cliff Trail at the recycling center. In any case, we started up the short trail with white tree markers and made it to the top where there is an expansive view of the length of the bay. The view is free of any signs of civilization, so aside from other people enjoying the same view, it’s easy to imagine that you are a Native American surveying all that you call home. There are some flat rocks and a clearing where you can sit and take in the view. The trail to the top is steep in places and the roots and slippery rocks make the hike more challenging. I used a wooden walking stick and it helped tremendously. My hiking partner had the responsibility of holding on to our dog’s leash and keeping our dog focused and separated from other dogs on leashes on the trail. Rather than taking the same relatively short trail back, we decided to try a different trail - one that for years had been the longer alternate trail. This proved to be a poor decision not so much because we were truly lost - we were always following trail markers - but because we came to a point of no return and had no choice but to figure out how to make it back up to the top and then start back down on the same trail that we’d started on. No doubt it was beautiful and peaceful meandering through the woods pretty much on our own, but it was also a bit disconcerting at times. We saw at least one sign that indicated scribbled with marker that a part of the trail was closed for construction, but by then it was too late. Parts of the trail close to the shore were narrow and it was tiring for me as an unseasoned hiker to have to stay so mindful of obstacles on the trail for almost 3 hours and 4.7 miles of ascending and descending hiking. The area called Strawberry Creek is apparently under construction and the plans are to make a handicapped accessible trail with stunning views. If you plan on hiking the Cliff Trail, just be forewarned that you should familiarize yourself with the trail options and plan accordingly. You wouldn’t want to unknowingly end up on the trail too late in the day and be hiking in the dark. Also don’t be surprised if you end up at the recycling center next to a mound of broken toilets and sinks and other cast off “clean” debris.

This was not an easy stroll kind of hike. I was getting cocky about halfway and saying to my husband, “Look at me, I’m a hiker! No one will believe it!” But a mere 10 minutes later I was saying, “How far is it to the stupid overlook?!” The view was worth it and I’m glad we did it. It was a nice hike with a great view. Lots of tree roots to walk over so be careful. I saw people of all ages enjoying the trail.

OK...I’m going post an honest (though slightly embarrassing) review here. I set out to hike the Cliff Trail alone on a gorgeous Saturday. I’d read the reviews and was prepared for the tree roots and moderate challenge. What I didn’t bargain for was the narrowness of trail as it paralleled the Cliff. Being alone and feeling unsure, I opted to turn back. It was extremely disappointing. I never saw any fairy houses. Never got to see the view. Evidently there are two approaches to the overlook and I was on the more difficult one. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable taking small children the way that I went! The trail is well marked with the exception of a few places. I’ll definitely try again, map in hand, if I return to the area. On the positive side, the woods are pretty and it was a glorious day to enjoy the outdoors!

We found this trail in one of our hiking books and knew that it was going to be great! A beautiful trail through the woods the terrain not too rough and the trail relatively easy some climbing involved. The views up at the top were absolutely spectacular! One of the best parts of the trail is seeing the little fairy houses along the way. It was the perfect late summer afternoon hike for us absolutely recommend it to all.

Would a experienced hiker be able to do this hike with a 6 months baby on the carrier. My baby is pretty easy going.

You and the little one would have no problem. There is one section where you walk along a cliff. The trail is not on the edge and there are signets alert you. Enjoy
