I just have so many mixed feelings about this place
2021年8月 • 夫妻情侣
My wife has been bugging me to come to this place for years and I finally decided to it.
So now I have gone and I can do my review.
My wife loves this place and have nothing but great things To say. I think we’re past history makes her a little more forgiving.
Let me start by saying they have a lot of restrictions on what you can bring to camp in.
We brought a tent that fits in the back of our pickup and a lot of other camping gear.
Fir the most part sites have nothing and there is no cell or internet.
Water in available at scattered locations.
There are showers here and there with outhouse and a few flush bathrooms. All very primitive and in need of up dating. They all smelled bad and some really really needed service (outhouse were full).
The bugs and especially mosquitoes were really really really basin the interior and in talking to others if it was mosquitoes it was horseflies.
The beaches were nice and very beautiful.
Plenty of walking trails.
Roads were narrow and dirt and everyone seems to drive whenever they need to go somewhere.
The sites were fairly large and wooded.
People were nice.
Not sure on coming back but this place is popular and busy and full so it must have good things going for it.

One of the more pleasant camping experiences I have had.
2021年7月
Outstanding place to camp. There beaches are beautiful and make for a great day exploring the wildlife as well. Abundance of crabs, hermit crabs, starfish etc. The sunset is beautifully set against rugged cliffs. The facilities although rudimental are clean with ample of showers and bathrooms. The staff is friendly. The walking trails are amazing. Will try to get there again.

A Special Place Any Time of Year
2021年4月
We came here in the off-season to photograph the seascapes. After parking in a sand lot we traversed the beach at low tide and walked the campground trails. The place had several scenic overlooks. It also had several secluded beaches, each with a character all its own. Camping lots varied in size and nearness to spigots, showers, and outhouses. Roads were narrow and rough but easy to walk. Trails led all over the place on rock, earth, and sand. We saw shorebirds and seabirds, but no deer. Poison ivy lurked along almost every path. The season was too early for any insect pests other than ticks. We used DEET to deter those. We enjoyed the rustic look of the campsites and campground facilities. If a site opens up, we’d hope to camp up by the shoreline to catch some summer sunrises and sunsets. We liked all that we saw; we suspect you’ll do the same.

Wonderful Rustic Campground for a Family Vacation
2019年8月
We enjoyed a wonderful weekend at this fantastic rustic family campground - the sites were nice, the facilities were clean & well kept, and the location is incredible. My family thoroughly enjoyed the many hikes available right from our site that followed the shoreline with many secluded beaches & shorelines along the way suitable for swimming and exploring. The sound of seals & the ring of the channel buoys greeted us each AM! We will definitely be back and treasured the time that we spent here.

Great Place for Catching Late Summer Sunsets
2019年8月
This place was a point of land of about 255 acres (103.2 h), not an actual island. The point and its clean and sandy beaches were easy to find at the end of ME 216. On late summer’s late afternoons, mosquitoes were especially thick and hungry. I wished I’d brought bug dope in my gear. Sunset views were amazing, particularly when with lobster boats returning to port. Clearly marked but narrow trails passed the no-frills campsites. Poison ivy surrounded the trails. My chosen campsite was about average for the lot. Its outhouse was clean and functional. Since it was a cool period, smoke from campfires often was heavy in the air. I liked all that I found here and I’m certain to come again.

You're Roughing It, But What a Sight
2019年7月 • 夫妻情侣
As we drove east from Bath in midcoastal Maine on Route 216 toward Casco Bay, the road abruptly turned to dirt and dead-ended at the shack of an untended guard house and continued, grazing our muffler, to the parking lot of an ageless gray clapboard structure called the Kelp Shed. This is the de facto community shelter of our destination, the Hermit Island Campground, which prohibits RVs, guns, pets, fireworks. radios and CDs without ear plugs, and, like us, unregistered guests.

So Be It. We wanted lunch, and the Kelp Shed is the island's only cafe. You order at the counter, where they only take cash. Yvonne ordered the paper plate of fried scallops and I the fried clams, each for $13, and good enough for us, one day, to pitch a tent and settle in for more, The campers there filled the spectrum of American demography--multigenerations of families, bikers layered with tattoos, hikers hitting the island's long trails, people who kayak and fish. They pay from $45 for a site in the island's wooded interior, often amid swarms of mosquitos, up to $73 for beach front "ocean prime" sites to celebrate postcard-worthy sunsets.

Wonderful campground and beautiful setting
2019年7月 • 家庭
We loved Hermit Island!!! It’s bigger than we expected but they give you a map to navigate all the little lanes. Next time we will reserve an ocean view site rather than an interior. Our lot was fine and quite/spacious, but there were much less mosquitos when you left the wooded interior and headed towards the water. I do recommend lots of deep woods bug spray and after-bite balm, and a screen room would have been smart for us to have brung!

One evening we went to dinner at the Kelp snack shack and had a great meal. The fried clams were really good and my son loved the crab cakes. It was quite a variety of excellent food for a “snack shack” (July menu Image is attached)

Also, the amount of kids activities was amazing. So many 8-15 year olds zipping around on their bikes, volleyball game going on by the snack shack, and many games inside the lodge. It was quite impressive. We will definitely be back in future years!!!

Beats any of the local motels hands down.

I have been there dozens of times including working there during the Ford administration as a young teen. It has creme de la creme coastal Maine scenery but many of the amenities of the past like the Yankee tourist fishing boat, gasoline for sale, post office, at the Kelp Shed, are gone.

Hermit Island's beaches are exquisite. Remember unlike California and Hawaii, Maine is a private beach state. Commoners are not welcome. Check out the signage in Small Point on the way down. Lots of gorgeous beaches with no parking and mean spirited messages with the force of law. Hermit Island keeps their beaches for everyone and that is getting a lot more rare in Maine.

You do get a window on what's left of the New England commercial fishing industry (lobsters) perusing Small Point Harbor, and the Lobster Pound (fuel). The harbor water may froth with mackerel in with the tide yours for the casting. You might get a flounder. The fifty foot draggers of the Ford years scraped the seabed bare for scallops and were sold off. Riparian industries in Maine making paper dyed the ocean brown. Floating down the Saco River I came up for air in a sheen of diesel fuel. Otters and wild salmon are gone for good.

Shower cleanliness is a game of expectations. Best to monitor when they are cleaned and wait for the work to finish. In the modern age there are more imaginative solutions to mosquitoes than doing nothing. They are disease vectors after all.
If you need to shop at the store forgive yourself for bad planning. A Maine grocery store of any size is 19 slow miles away in Bath. National chain trendy outposts are 50 slow miles in Portland. No Costco in Maine.

Having camped across the American southwest and the Sierra Nevada I think Hermit Island's campsites are decently far apart with interesting variety. The RV ban means no generators-a major benefit. The aluminum rowboat rental, dock, and boat launch are excellent. The nine foot tides mean interesting discoveries in the rocks at low tide. If you like jumping into water from high places there are cliffs. It is a very, very nice park, not a wilderness. Deer have predators in a wilderness.
