Oceanside campsite, waves breaking on the shore all night, killer sunsets, fresh lobster and oysters nightly. It just does not get better than that. The staff we friendly and helpful. They left you to your own, not checking in at the site like other campgrounds do. Bathrooms were clean, showers free. We absolutely loved the beaches and rode through the large grounds seeing different waterfront scenes. Campsites well spaced out and it was so awesome not to see big TVs and hear generators. Instead we saw and heard so many birds it was crazy! A photographers paradise. We will go back.

Gorgeous spot. Beautifully cared for. Showers and toilet facilities need dire attention but the beauty of this idyllic spot is very special.

I went during BMW MOA RSM's downeast rally, it's the start of the season for Hermit Island. I'd never been there before and was genuinely awestruck by the beauty of the campsites. The weather was a little cool and misty (it was 90+F at home in MA, and 50's while I was camping). The campsite I selected was one of the (if not THE) best I've ever had - level, private. Other sites looked great also - fantastic views and super private. The views, the sounds of the surf, the sounds of warblers in the seaside brushland...unforgettable.

I started coming here when I was 11 years old, and on my first trip I met my best friend.. and we kept in touch. Now we get to meet up on the island as adults every summer! This place will steal your heart! 😎🦀🐚

We have been going to Hermit for a week every summer for about 20 years, give or take a year or two. It is a wonderful place for an unplugged vacation. The rustic camping is just rough enough to get out of the city comfort zone that we usually inhabit. The city of Bath is close enough for essentials, like when we forgot pillows! The wildlife is another plus, although in recent years we've begun to see less. We have seen bald eagles, many deer with fawns, skunks, a porcupine, turtles, frogs, toads and numerous aquatic bird species. We have camped in a tent and a camper when the kids were small. Sometimes there is a bluegrass band that plays at the Kelp Shed, as well as wildlife presentations. The numerous beaches are fun to explore and each one has its own personality. And don't forget the Bathtub! Everyone should jump in there at least once. 🙂 I highly recommend Hermit as a safe and engaging family (as well as couple) adventure! ❤️

My wife has been bugging me to come to this place for years and I finally decided to it.
So now I have gone and I can do my review.
My wife loves this place and have nothing but great things To say. I think we’re past history makes her a little more forgiving.
Let me start by saying they have a lot of restrictions on what you can bring to camp in.
We brought a tent that fits in the back of our pickup and a lot of other camping gear.
Fir the most part sites have nothing and there is no cell or internet.
Water in available at scattered locations.
There are showers here and there with outhouse and a few flush bathrooms. All very primitive and in need of up dating. They all smelled bad and some really really needed service (outhouse were full).
The bugs and especially mosquitoes were really really really basin the interior and in talking to others if it was mosquitoes it was horseflies.
The beaches were nice and very beautiful.
Plenty of walking trails.
Roads were narrow and dirt and everyone seems to drive whenever they need to go somewhere.
The sites were fairly large and wooded.
People were nice.
Not sure on coming back but this place is popular and busy and full so it must have good things going for it.

Outstanding place to camp. There beaches are beautiful and make for a great day exploring the wildlife as well. Abundance of crabs, hermit crabs, starfish etc. The sunset is beautifully set against rugged cliffs. The facilities although rudimental are clean with ample of showers and bathrooms. The staff is friendly. The walking trails are amazing. Will try to get there again.

We came here in the off-season to photograph the seascapes. After parking in a sand lot we traversed the beach at low tide and walked the campground trails. The place had several scenic overlooks. It also had several secluded beaches, each with a character all its own. Camping lots varied in size and nearness to spigots, showers, and outhouses. Roads were narrow and rough but easy to walk. Trails led all over the place on rock, earth, and sand. We saw shorebirds and seabirds, but no deer. Poison ivy lurked along almost every path. The season was too early for any insect pests other than ticks. We used DEET to deter those. We enjoyed the rustic look of the campsites and campground facilities. If a site opens up, we’d hope to camp up by the shoreline to catch some summer sunrises and sunsets. We liked all that we saw; we suspect you’ll do the same.

We enjoyed a wonderful weekend at this fantastic rustic family campground - the sites were nice, the facilities were clean & well kept, and the location is incredible. My family thoroughly enjoyed the many hikes available right from our site that followed the shoreline with many secluded beaches & shorelines along the way suitable for swimming and exploring. The sound of seals & the ring of the channel buoys greeted us each AM! We will definitely be back and treasured the time that we spent here.

This place was a point of land of about 255 acres (103.2 h), not an actual island. The point and its clean and sandy beaches were easy to find at the end of ME 216. On late summer’s late afternoons, mosquitoes were especially thick and hungry. I wished I’d brought bug dope in my gear. Sunset views were amazing, particularly when with lobster boats returning to port. Clearly marked but narrow trails passed the no-frills campsites. Poison ivy surrounded the trails. My chosen campsite was about average for the lot. Its outhouse was clean and functional. Since it was a cool period, smoke from campfires often was heavy in the air. I liked all that I found here and I’m certain to come again.

Can people not staying in the campground wander through on a hike or is that frowned upon?

My daughter is visiting Hermit Island next week. I saw the most recent review about the ticks. What type of ticks did you primarily see? Do you have any advice on what spray to use? We are a little freaked out by the volume you described.

We just left Hermit Island after a 2-night weekend stay. I read the other traveler's review regarding the ticks. We drove to Sailboat Beach (different than Sand Dollar) and didn't experience any ticks. But we did, however, flick 3 ticks or so off of our clothing after walking out to Breakwater Point through the bushes. Overall, our main bug concern was the mosquitoes. They're everywhere! Spray often and start a fire at your campsite to smoke them out. We like an orange spray bottle called Ben's. It's more like an oil that you spritz on and rub in. There's no cloud of bug spray like using a can of "Off!" that gets all in your nostrils and mouth. Ben's helps protect against both ticks and mosquitoes. Good luck staying bug-free!
How difficult is it to get ocean sites off season in late September?

I was told by one of the campground managers that after labor day you can pull up to the gate at 8 am go into the campground find a site you like put a piece of luggage or such on the picnic table to claim your site then go down to the kelp shed and pay $42 a night ...this is for any site on the island ocean side etc. First come first serve. The last weekend Hermit Island is open is Columbus Day Weekend. :-)
