Excellent live performance by a large ensemble.
This was the first live concert by the Orchestra since the start of the pandemic. It was well attended. We had to show our vaxx cards (CDC ok) to enter the theater. Since it was the first live concert, it featured a "recently"-discovered piano concerto by Florence Price. Michelle Cann was the soloist. Also on the program were Ferdie Grofe's Grand Canyon Suite (had listened to it many times, never saw it performed). A piece that was commissioned for the State of Maine was also performed as a premiere. The overall program was simply delightful, even could forgive the clarinet squeek midway through the Grand Canyon Suite.

Portlabnd Symphony Never Disappoints
2018年3月 • 夫妻情侣
The quality of the orchestra, the choice of program, and the hall, regardless of our seat, all made for an exceptional evening for our recent outing...even with our seats 2/3 up the upper balcony! It's a can't miss evening out. Did the preconcert talk as well. Helpful. That starts 1 1/4 h before the concert.

Holiday Magic ... Rivaled Holiday Pops
2017年12月 • 夫妻情侣
Absolutely wonderful experience attending the Portland Symphony's Holiday Magic. It was very nearly as good as the Boston's Pops holiday show (attended last two years) for half the cost and a tenth of the hassle getting to and from the event. Merrill Auditorium was more comfortable and much less crowded than Boston's Symphony Hall and parking was inexpensive and right next door. The seats were comfortable, the crowd was very appreciative and well-behaved and the sing-along more enthusiastic and enjoyable than Pops. All-in-all, we have a new family Christmas tradition! The PSO can hold its head high next to any orchestra.

Magic of Christmas-Portland Symphony Christmas Concerts
2016年12月 • 好友
My annual visit to Maine is always highlighted by the Christmas concert by the Portland Symphony. This is probably Robert Moody's last year in Portland but this performances never fail to frame the music of the season. The programs have been very innovative including Cirque de la Symphonie aerialists performing on silk fabrics and ropes to the music of the orchestra. The Portland Community Chorus provides the wonderful vocal component and Merrill Auditorium is a great venue for the performances. Ample parking is right there. A wonderful activity of the season.

Pops concert

We attended the Classic Rock concert and it was a lot of rocking fun. All the lights, loud music and accomplished musicians presented a fantastic program. The singers, guitarists, drummer and pianist put us right at a memorable time. The guitarists who arranged all the music for the orchestra is a genius. This was a great afternoon and I just stumbled on the concert on the internet before our trip. Merrill Auditorium would also be a great place to tour. It is a very old theater, but the acoustics were great!

The kids Discovery Concert series - a fun and wonderful way to introduce children to classical music.
2016年5月 • 家庭
The Portland Symphony does a fantastic job in engaging kids with their mid day Sunday Discovery Concerts. Before the concert there is an opportunity for the kids to try out instruments at the instrument "petting zoo", or even give the baton a try in the "conductors corner". The tickets for these concerts are very affordable - only $10!! The Portland Symphony would like families to discover their music.
Only one hour long, just enough for the kids to sit through. Beethoven Loves Nature was the last concert of this year's series, and during this Beethoven 6th there was a fun and of course child friendly conversation between a "speaking tree" and "Leopold the Leopard". We are looking forward to taking our grandchildren to next years Discovery concerts.

Great classical concert series.
2016年1月 • 夫妻情侣
We signed up for the concert series this year and our expectations were more than met, not only is the Portland Symphony an excellent orchestra but the programs are also exciting. A big bonus going to this symphony (compared to Boston) is that there are so many dining options right around the corner (way to many to name them all). Parking have never been a problem.

We enjoyed Portland in love on Valentine's Day!

An unusual presentation by the Portland Symphony orchestra. The PSO
joined forces with some local Portland musicians and singers. The symphony played the usual classical pieces and also accompanied, a soul band and a beautiful vocalist
as they performed contemporary love songs.

We had a wonderful evening enjoying the blend of music. The person that did the score for most of the numbers is a genius. Classical + Contemporary = fun

Lacking This Year
2015年12月 • 好友
This was my third annual visit to The Magic of Christmas Concert of The Portland Symphony. I have also attended many other concerts throughout the year of The Portland Symphony and Guest Performers.

In my opinion this years Magic of Christmas was not very good. The Symphony, as usual, was terrific; but it was really lacking in the additional acts to the Show. It seems like there must have been a very small budget for this years show.

I found the Cirque performers a distraction to the overall experience of the Performance of the Symphony. There "tricks" made me nervous and not able to appreciate any of the symphony's wonderful scores. The tap dancing Santa was talented - but not enough to be a feature performer. I dont think circus performers should be paired with a Symphony Orchestra.

The Magic Of Christmas Show of the 2013 Season was fantastic. Robert Moody was a featured singer with another female guest soloist - they were terrific. Last year also featured a wonderful female soloist.

This years show lacked any sort of a theme and seemed very "thin" in the overall performance the show has always exhibited.

It just seemed to me that not much thought went into this year's Show. Maybe a budget issue.

I am still an avid supported of The Portland Symphony and look forward to another Christmas Show. I am also attending other performances in 2016.

Merry Christmas
