My adult daughters and I were initially attracted to there being a "ghost town" nearby. We made reservations for the "ferry" to this state-managed island to see for ourselves. Just North of Portland, the ferry parking lot is fairly easy to find. The pontoon boat is just a stone's throw (OK, slingshot) away. Four trips/day, reservations required, $8/pp. The island caretaker is quite amiable and will answer all questions. A "trolley" is available to pull you a mile to the camp site. You can pay a small fee to stay overnight in one of the log lean toes. Outdoor grills are available, five free mountain bikes, plus two canoes, two single kayaks, and three multi-person kayaks are available to rent. The scenery is spectacular. The grounds are nicely kept. The main toad is great to hike, with many trails veering off to the sides. There are abandoned buildings still standing from the Perkins Township days when the island was inhabited. There is a cemetery and modern, if sparse, bathrooms. No showers. There is a two-story viewing tower. We saw wildlife including five dear, a bald eagle, and turtle laying eggs. The caretaker let us into the Tubbs house and we walked both floors, and the cellar. Very cool with original furniture left from days gone by. We spent about four hours, but plan to return. It is quiet, NOT crowded (five of us on the first of four ferries), and quite scenic. No parking fee, reasonable rates, rustic, and very nice. We found no ghosts, but paranormal investigators have done research on the island we were told.

I've never been but I want to. Major Samuel Tubbs is my great x6 grand father and he built that house in 1806. My grandmother is Lucy Tubbs

Got a great view of Swan Island when I was leaving Richmond to cross the bridge to West Dresden. It looks like a beautiful anomaly in the Kennebec River. Requires advance planning to take the small ferry to it at Merrymeeting Bay. Richmond itself is like stepping back into time, such a quaint, historic town with great architecture.

Swan Island brings me back to my younger days, walking the woods away from people, immersed in nature. It's a wonderful little corner of the world. My wellness retreat (The Wellness Spot) looks out to Swan Island. The regular ferry service has made visits to the Island much easier. My first year living in Richmond, I looked out my upstairs bedroom window to see a female moose standing on the front lawn. While you may not see a moose, you are likely to see bald eagles and hear the coyotes yipping.

Very unique experience. First I had to make a reservation. We were greeted at the dock by a wildlife expert. He took us over by boat. We were the only ones on the island that day. He dropped us off and we were on our own. Walked most of the island and we bought our own lunch that we ate at one of the shelters. It is an abandoned town and the story is very interesting. Walking through and reading about the houses and who used to live there was kind of earie. I really felt the history of the island and how they used to live. The only thing I have to say is where insect repellent. On the trip back we were covered with ticks.

We went here for a lobster bake. They have them once a month during the summer. We had a wonderful time. The boat ride out to the campground was so pleasant and lovely. We saw eagles and seals and quite a few jumping sturgeon. The food at the lobster bake was excellent. I would definitely do this again.

A favorite place to get away for my hubby and I, but also good to take Girl/Boy Scouts. 3 sided shelters are OK if there's no bugs (August/September), else nets are a good idea. Hiking, history, turkeys and deer and eagles. Good trails, and the IF&W staff are great. Toilet/sink facilities, no showers yet. And you come and go by canoe/kayak or by their launch, from Richmond - and you get off the river and there's an AWESOME pub (The Old Goat), a wicked good breakfast/lunch place (Annabella's) and The Ice Cream Place (Oh, Oh, Oh!!!). Sign up with the IF&W.

The ~2000+ acre island in the Kennebec River off Richmond is a great place to stroll, hike or camp overnight. It's the long abandoned Town of Perkins which never reached more than 100 people and has been a Wildlife Management Area since shortly after the 'town's" demise in 1936. Lots of wildlife (e.g., eagles, deer, raccoons, coyotes, porcupines, and birds. Accessible by 'ferry' or personal watercraft and great for individuals, couples and families.

Civilization reverts to nature here. Over 100 people lived here in the middle of the 19thC. Now, the ghosts and the animals play.

We went over to Swan Island on a beautiful day in early September. We were surprised that there were only a handful of people of the island. You take a short ferry ride across the river (reservations required) and hop on the back of the truck for a ride to the campground. The island is great for hiking and cycling. Surviving building from the period before the 1930's when it was inhabited take you back to a different era. Stop at Annabella's in Richmond just a few feet from the ferry landing for delicious sandwiches.
