We were driving from Greenville to Kokadjo, in search of errant moose, when we spotted a small sign with an airplane and the words "B52 Crash Site". Making a right turn onto the gravel road, we drove for almost 7 miles to the crash site. The gravel road was mostly well-maintained but it had enough ruts, gullies, jutting rocks and fallen trees to require constant attention. We didn't care as the drive allowed us more time to moose hunt! Stay on the main gravel road unless you want to get hopelessly lost in the Maine Woods! We bypassed the first "turn off" to the crash site due to a large deer carcass that was rotting and blocking the road. Persevering, we kept driving and eventually reached the crash site. After parking next to the pot-a-potty placed there, we followed a short, well-maintained trail up Elephant Mountain. Debris from the crash is strewn across the mountainside. It was a somber visit, remembering the 7 men who lost their lives in the crash. Well worth a visit even though the round trip drive into the woods took us more than 2 hours (rather than the anticipated 20 minutes!) .

Worthwhile trip but CHECK BEFORE YOU GO!!
Access changes based on weather, road conditions, and paper company permission to use access roads. This can change week-to-week, not just year-to-year. Ask someone with “local knowledge”. Do not trust an internet post.
Local ATV clubs, local guides, and local outdoor businesses (Northwoods Outfitters or Moosehead Motorsports) will know.

This is a very nice memorial to the airmen who died in 1963 in a B-52. What isn't nice is the 6-8 miles of rocky, bumpy, road with tons of holes and ruts. We did not realize nor was it stated anywhere that the road wouldn't be paved. After about 4 miles in a Mini Cooper.....we kept going since we had already tried that long. The roads are not well marked and ended up turning around several times. It is a very frustrating drive which I'm sure if we were in a huge truck we could have zoomed there. It took us about 2 hours to get there.

Not really a hike as you drive up to the site. Watch the directions as there are a few ways to up to the site.
In remembrance of the crew who lost their lives back in 1963 on a bitter cold winter day.

We heard about the site but since we could not get internet out in the boonies didn’t know the details. We found the sign on the main road for the memorial. We proceeded to drive down the road and it was 8 miles of bumpy road with lots of potholes. We didn’t give up yet. Then we get to what we though could be a trail but it was poorly marked- No directional signage telling how far to the memorial. We walked up the somewhat steep road for at least a half mile and saw nothing. Therefore we turned around and came back down.

If you want tourists to visit something it needs to be a well marked trail with markers with the distance to go. Before you attempt to go to this site make sure you have clear directions on where and how far. Also keep in mind that you are in a very remote area and will not have cell phone or internet service and be cautious. We went down a road and went over a bridge that was not safe for cars and was not clearly marked on the side we went over.

On a positive note the foliage and view was pretty.

Took the gorgeous drive during peak fall season to the B-52 memorial site. The dirt roads were in great condition and frequent markers made locating the site easy. Lovely and very interesting memorial. Visitors were respectful.

This is a historic memorial site to honor those who crashed their B52 plane in the middle of the Maine woods in 1963. If you are visiting Greenville, check this place out. To get there, you will take Prong Pond Road off Lily Bay Road and follow the signs. The roads are hard packed gravel/logging roads so its a bit bumpy but worth the 7 mile trek. Once you get to elephant mountain there is a small parking area. When you start following the trail in, you will see plane debris everywhere. This is an easy hike meandering through the woods and checking out what has been preserved from the crash. Although it was a tragic event, its nice to see they are not forgotten.

We rented ATVs to make the trek to the B-52 Crash site. The trails to the site were very picturesque, riding through the forest observing beaver dams in ponds along the way. Once we made it to the site it was a short walk to the memorial where you walk through the crash site preserved much as it was on that fateful day in 1963. Seeing the pieces of the wreckage really hits home as to the sacrifices that are brave men and women of the armed forces face each and every day. R.I.P. the crew of the B-52.

it took us longer to get there than checking out the memorial however everyone must stop and check the memorial. we had our kid 9yrs and 10yrs old and they were amazed on the history of it...before you check the memorial read a little about it to your kids or yourself incase they have any questions while you hike. I highly recommend it for any age. the memorial is not as big as I imagine since its been moved and put back years years ago. it sure was buggy there first week of July 2019
