Pleasantly surprised with this museum

Ran across this nice little museum while checking out lighthouses nearby . Nice collection of artifacts regarding the lighthouses and other historical pieces related to the area. Wonderful informative volunteer staff. Enjoyed chatting with them.

Very Educational!

A small but very well arranged museum with the history of that area. Starting with the Civil War camps, the amazing shipbuilding that this area did before and during World War II,and how it all forever changed the entire landscape, population and lives of all involved. Very interesting. Free but they have a donation request which we gladly filled. Would highly recommend when you visit the Bug Light.

(Late Post) Quick stop at Cushing's Point Museum @ Bug Light Park!

Be sure to say hi to Donna & Anne from Tamy, the travel surgeon. I had an awesome time chatting with Anne & Donna! Two of the nicest people in Maine! Open 10a-4p.

Drive a little further down to check out the Bug Light Park/Lighthouse and Liberty Ship Memorial. Big green lawn for our 4-legged friends welcome too!

Lovely little museum with excellent docents!

This museum cob=vers much history of the surrounding area as well as the place you are standing. There is a section on rail history, Civil War, the local shipbuilding industry and Work War II. The docents were very knowledgeable and eager to share their knowledge. Cute little gif shop as well. Highly recommended.

A great visit for historian's and travelers alike!

I visited the South Portland Historical Society in early September and was very impressed with the welcoming attitude of the staff. I was immediately greeted and asked if I had any questions. A staff member then personally showed me around the museum, answering my questions fully and even pointing me to greater resources I could find on my subjects of interest. The museum building is located a mere 400 feet from the waterfront of the harbor and the old Liberty Ship yards. I found it very interesting to be able to compare the artifacts and pictures from the museum with the actual site just outside. This Society is well organized and boasts a compliment of dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers as well as artifacts and books dating back before the Civil War. I could easily spend hours researching here. I highly recommend a visit, something I will be doing again!

Nice place to visit. Somewhat limited hours of operation. Stamps for lighthouse visits [for Lighthouse Passport fanatics] can be obtained here.

Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed your visit! Our museum is open seven days a week, from 10am to 4pm, from May 1st through October 30, on weekends in November and December, and year-round by appointment.

Lovely little museum.

Very nicely laid out with an easy flow between exhibits. Helpful research room with many city directories and other books for genealogical research. The gift shop was nice and the volunteer staff very friendly and helpful. I enjoyed the visit.
