My wife and I visited Southwest Harbor for the 2nd time, but unfortunately the island shuttle bus is still not running to the main Acadia island, so we decided to complete the last remaining hikes on the quiet side. We had already done Acadia Mountain, so this time we did Flying Mountain to Valley Cove and returned on Valley Peak.

As someone who does not do well with heights I did not like Valley Cove at all. However, Flying Mountain was very nice. It was significantly easier and less uphill than many of the other hikes but still very enjoyable. Every trail seems to have something a little bit different and Flying Mountain is no exception. Overall a very enjoyable hike and I would recommend it. It is a shame it is just a little too far to incorporate with Acadia Mountain but it is worth doing it separately.

This trail is recommended by a friend, it is relative short 1.5 mile loop, offers good views. The trail goes up, over looks somes sound. It then goes down to a cove which is very scenic, then go back to the parking lot. We hiked this trail with wonder land, ship harbor and bass Harbor light house on the same day.

Over the past week, my wife and I hiked around 10 different trails in Acadia National Park. The Flying Mountain Hiking Trail was one of our favorites. I don't know how the mountain got the name "flying" but don't let that scare you off. The trail is rated as medium level of difficulty (blue) and is good for adults and children who are in reasonable shape. From the parking lot, the trail ascends through a series of man-made steps for about 3/10 of a mile to the summit with spectacular views of Sommes Sound and beyond. From there, the trail gradually descends to ground level and views of Valley Cove, where you can walk the fire road back to the parking lot. The trail has a little bit of everything - great views, a modest change in elevation and some flat sections.

Although we skipped Flying Mountain itself as it was too crowded, we were lucky enough to have hiked Valley Cove (which had just opened after the falcon nesting period was over.) It was a challenging trail with lots of boulder-hopping but the views were stupendous. We then went up Valley Peak to the top and down the other side to the parking lot. It had rained heavily the previous day, so we were glad to be going UP Valley Peak as many of the folks coming down had taken spills in the slippery rocks. The views from the top were amazing and we found a small place where no one could see that there was an outcropping to sit and watch the water, the boats and enjoy the day. On the way down the other side of Valley Peak, I actually took a slight fall but no real damage. Glad that we did this and would do it again but add in Acadia Mountain to make it a full day hike.

A beautiful easy hike with gorgeous views and ending on a nice beach. We went in the afternoon and there were only a few other cars in the lot and we encountered only several other hikers. A great perch to watch boats on the sound and get away from the crowds.

Hiked this in late December, used trekking poles that we took for fun but they came in handy around the icy areas. It’s a great hike, not too far but the climb up can be a bit rough if you aren’t in shape so take it slower. The views are beautiful up top and I love the way the terrain changes from rocky to the shoreline then to the wooded area that smells like Christmas! So much to see it’s gorgeous!

We enjoyed our hike up Flying Mountain. The view from the top was pretty and it didn't take too long to get to the top.

On one of the websites about the trails, it lists this hike as an "easy day hike". We are in our 70's but in pretty good shape and hike often. This was a tough hike filled with boulders. The view at the top is fabulous and Valley Cove is wonderful. But just be prepared for some tough going for the first part of the hike.

This is a fairly vertical hike but very doable even for us "seniors." Terrific views from a rocky outcropping at the top before descending to a beach for a nice contrast in scenery. Saw two pileated woodpeckers and a northern goshawk on the walk. Terrific hike.
