One of the older homes In Wiscasset. Have not been there for quite a while but history is well worth the visit

Thank your visiting Layal! The house is open June 1 to October 15, Friday - Sunday, 11 am to 4 pm and December 6-8. You can also spend the night at Nickels-Sortwell House now! Part of the house is available for vacation rental. You get a private tour and get to see parts of the house not on the tour. Check us out on Turnkey Vacation rentals, AirBnb and VRBO We hope you'll come back and visit again!

Very attentive tour guide who knew a great deal about the history of not only the home and family, but also of Wiscasset! Beautiful home and interesting family story. Greatly enjoyed our visit and will continue to tour the other Wiscasset museums!

Belle occasion de photo avec un des plus beaux exemples d’architecture fédérale dans la région. La maison se visite pour les plus curieux/ceux qui ont le temps

A nice stop buy not the only reason to go to Wicasset
2017年9月 • 夫妻情侣
Stopped by during one of the summer art nights. Got a very personalized free tour. Saw all the usual things seen on the tour and got a bit of a history lesson. The giudes couldn't have been nicer and constantly asked us to ask questions. It was almost dark and they were just about to close up. The guides offered to take us to rooms not normally included on the tour. They locked the door and by the time we were finishing we were using flashlights and our cell phones to finish up. We had a great time learning the story of this house thru history. Unfortunately we didn't make it to the nearby Castle Tucker which appearently tells more of a story of a family struggling thru the same time period also protected by the same group.

We love this place

This was our first Historic New England property to visit. It was a serendipitous finding, on an Autumn afternoon some years back. It inspired us to become members of Historic New England, and to include visiting their properties when vacationing in New England.

Great example of Maine's heritage

This beautiful house is a great example of Maine's most prosperous era. It has a fascinating story, told to us by a very knowledgable and interesting guide. A good example of historic preservation, it has changed very little over the years and retains most of its original furniture. Well worth a visit!

We stopped by the house and got a very thoughtful docent named Dan. He knew the house and it's accoutrements very well. He had great stories about the families and the house and showed us pictures of the generations that had lived there k

Historic New England Home
2016年8月 • 好友
Once you have visited the Castle Tucker home, walk on over to the Nickels-Sortwell Home, for another wonderful tour of a historic home. Again, the fee is under $10, and check the website for the hours, for the hours and days are limited. This home was built in 1807, and is another beauty of the historic homes in Wiscasset. You will hear a lot about the town's early history, and marvel at the wealth held by some families in the town. The Sortwell family lovingly restored this home, and it shows.

IMPRESSIVE HIGH FEDERAL STYLE MANSION FROM WISCASSET’S HEYDEY
2016年7月 • 独自旅游
The Nickels-Sortwell House on Main Street in Wiscasset was about two blocks up from Red’s Eats and the Donald E. Davey Bridge that connects Wiscasset to Edgecomb.

Parking anywhere in the downtown area of Wiscasset is a challenge, especially in the vicinity of the shops, Red’s Eats, and Sprague’s on the opposite side of the road from Red’s. It's easier to find a parking space on a side street.

Historic New England opens the mansion for tours Friday to Sunday from June 1st to October 15th from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM with tours starting on the 1/2 hour.

Admission fees were:
$8 - Adults
$7 - Seniors
$4 - Students

Jennifer, my tour guide at the mansion, was very knowledgeable and personable.

The Nickels family did not fare much better financially than the Lee and Tucker families of Castle Tucker, another Historic New England property in Wiscasset.

This house was much grander than Castle Tucker. It was an imposing three stories tall. It was built in the High Federal style by Captain William Nickels.

The Jefferson Embargo of 1807 devastated the economy of the Town of Wiscasset. Captain Nickels was forced to sell the house. It became a hotel. Then, Alvin Sortwell, an industrialist, banker, and former mayor of Cambridge, MA, bought the house in 1899. The Sortwells restored the house and decorated it luxuriously with opulent Colonial Revival furnishings and antiques.

When going from room to room, I got the sense that this house was built to impress.

The Sortwells’ daughter Jane was a tour guide here until a few years ago.

I especially liked an enclosed porch area that overlooked the backyard that, no doubt, had gardens in its heyday.

I also liked the hallway on the second floor. It had a door out onto a small porch atop the roof of the first floor entryway.

I highly recommend visiting Castle Tucker as an example of homes dating from Wiscasset’s heyday.

Had a guided tour of this house a while back by the lady occupying the house. Interesting décor, large rooms and nicely presented, even telling us about initials a young boy carved in wood on the 3rd floor.
