We had a large group set up to tour so split it into smaller groups so we could all get through in a timely manner. Our guide was very knowledgeable, talking about Fort Cumberland, access to the river from the tunnels which may have been instrumental in the Underground Railroad, and the church that was built upon the foundations of the fort. We also learned about a room that was uncovered during some construction and heard stories about the beautiful Tiffany windows inside. We were able to enter the church itself and listen to the large organ and then went into the tunnels, making several stops along the way. We walked out to the front yard where you could visualize the trek the slaves would make up to the tunnels and their last stop on the way to freedom. The stairs are original, but the average person can navigate them using caution and the taller among us had to watch their heads at points. All in all, I would visit here again.

Emmanuel Episcopal Church is on the original site of Fort Cumberland. It still has tunnels used in case of an attack. It also has beautiful grounds and Louis Comfort Tiffany windows. If you love history and historical buildings, you should make a stop.

The Emmanuel Episcopal Church is Gothic Revival Architecture building on the hill where Fort Cumberland once was. The ground (founder) of the Forth is still below the Church. The church modeled after the St. Paul's Church in Brighton England (based on the historic information). It is too bad that the Church was closed the day I visited. I would love to see the original Tiffany stained-glass from three different period. It is worth a climb in the heat for photos.

Please someone explain to me why it wasn't open the day after Good Friday when we were traveling to Cumberland specifically to see historic downtown? I was looking forward to a tour, and the sign on the door on Good Friday said that tours would resume on Saturday, which was the next day. There was no sign explaining why there the church was locked up and seemingly abandoned, and it wasn't even lunchtime or near closing.

We saw this tour on a flyer in the visitors' center and are glad we went. The Tiffany windows are stunning, and two church members explained the history of the church. Built on the ruins of Fort Cumberland (used by Colonel G. Washington), the tunnels were likely used in the Underground Railroad due to the numbers of enslaved people working in town and the proximity to the Mason Dixon line. We found the tour very interesting and were glad we could go into the tunnels that were originally part of the fort.

Beautiful old church with amazing Tiffany windows. Truly a place of Christian worship, you can feel " God is in this place". This structure and the tunnels underneath are history gems. A must for a history buff.

A beautiful place of worship. Lots of history and sits at the foot of historic Washington Street. Built on the site of Fort Cumberland and the tunnels below the church remain. Tours are available. Call the church for details. Amazing stained glass windows!

This is a hidden gem. Definitely take the tour. This church on the hill stands on the site of a pre-Revolutionary War fort and was a safe stop on the underground railroad. It also boast three Tiffany windows. The tour includes the church and windows, and the underground areas showing the remains of the fort and hidden areas which sheltered fleeing slaves.

We were in town the weekend before Halloween and the church had a big event going on. They were offering tours of the tunnels. I love history and my ten year old was excited about seeing a place that served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. They didn't seem to be able to handle the volume of people. We stood in a hot crowded church hall for about 15 minutes and then we were quickly run through the tunnels because they were running out of time. We got no history and were shuffled in and out. I recommend visiting another time of year and keep your fingers crossed that you can catch someone willing to show you around.
