This free museum is only open during the busy weekend afternoons so easy access is the problem. From Rt #40, we took Rogers Ave. to Court House Dr. (1.2miles) directly to the large free parking behind the Howard Co. Courthouse. Then a level 500' walk passes the 1851 jail and courthouse, to this distinctive church built in 1894. Here were scores of pictured descriptions and artifact displays about early Ellicott, its role in the Civil War, and its struggle with 17 significant floods since 1772.
After watching one of the flood videos and seeing its beautiful organ-dominated sanctuary (continues as a wedding chapel), we exited to descend the new stairway. Its direct access to Main Street makes it a short walk, passing the Firehouse Museum to the free B&O City Station Museum built in 1831.
We had a very informative and enjoyable visit to this historic city of pretty buildings along a narrow corridor filled with visitors and a constant parade of autos.

That was actually a pleasant surprise, the museum has a lot of local historical information - including history of Howard County and local flooding in Elliott City. It's free to get in and the old church makes a great museum experience.

The architecture of this little town is so striking! It is just beautiful. It is this little cobbled stone town with exquisite architecture in the middle of the rest of modern plain Maryland. I don't get why it is there. It is stunning but why are the surrounding towns nothing like it?

I recommend parking in the courthouse lot and walking down. I had trouble finding this, even with the map provided by the Visitor's Center. Museum is small, but it's free and the displays are as good as any other museum that I have been to. Most of it is Civil War and flood related.

Unlike the RR station museum, or the fire museum, this museum attempts to explain the whole story of Ellicott City. It is in an old church, and preserved the old pipe organ in functioning condition. However, most of the museum is dedicated to explaining how this old mill town was started and how it evolved over the years. The museum is small and doesn't take long to explore. Most of the artifacts aren't that interesting to kids, there are few hands-on items. The museum is off the beaten track, tucked behind the EC courthouse. It requires a hike up a lot of stairs from Main street, or a walk down the hill from the court house parking lot.

My family has lived in Ellicott City for almost 15 years. We've never known about this museum in Ellicott City. It's got so much historical memorabilia, everything from portraits, furniture, photographs, tons of history. It's even got a timeline of all the natural disasters that have destroyed this small, but important town. Seemingly, it's housed inside an old church. There's a very friendly volunteer inside extremely willing to answer questions, provide feedback, and share personal stories. The old church pipe organ is the centerpiece in the main room of the museum. There's even a small souvenir shop inside as well.

It is very small, but it has some good things. Be advised that it is on the top of a steep hill above Main Street.

I came today with my 4year old for their new Story time. I didn't have any expectations and was pleasantly surprised that the museum is in an old church. It is very small but had some very interesting information, especially for residents of Howard County. The Story time at this time was very small and intimate. If course this can change if it increases in popularity. I would definitely return to look over the displays more.

The museum is quite small, but it does a great job at discussing the history of the county. It's located in an old church and is only open on the weekends. They had a nice gift shop filled with Maryland memorabilia. The volunteer who was attending to us was very friendly and knew a lot about the area. Admission is free, but they do recommend a donation.

I am a history buff, can't get enough of it. Not sure of the hours, prices or cost to be a member. But try it, you will love it.
