PSA: Located on a Controlled Access Facility. Federally issued DoD ID is not accepted for access. If you have a pet in your car you only told at the access control gate “No Pets” which is fine BUT you are still not allowed to turn around or leave until information from your license and tag is obtained for completion of an “Incident Report” to be completed. Easier to cross the border than access this memorial but that’s DHS for you. RIDICULOUS!!!!!

Came here for training and wasn’t aware the memorial was here. It was beautiful to see homage being paid to our fallen heroes.

I was here for training and am not sure how you can get past the security check point. The campus is an old Catholic women’s college I believe and the grounds are beautifully maintained.

I have a friend and former neighbor who has his name on the Illinois Memorial Plaque at this beautiful site. So last year I drove from Illinois to Pa helping someone in Pa, and realized I was within a few hours of this Memorial. I had googled it, even called to make sure I knew anything important, and read some about it. I was so excited, as I knew my friend's widow would never get out to see it and I would take pictures. I carry and conceal, but I did exactly what the state of Md told me I had to do to secure my firearm while traveling back on my way home. Everything was locked as it should be. I drove into the Memorial, when asked "drugs, alcohol, firearms", I told them I had done what I knew should be, and they said no admittance. I asked if they had some place there to lock them, as I had come 1200 miles, and this was so important to me. A woman asked if I was staying the night, and could leave firearm in the room, which no, I wasn't staying, I needed to keep driving towards home. So, she then told me the local fire dept was holding for people for a donation. Of course, I said I would do that and be right back. The fire dept was very nice and understood and back I went. So, the older guy was gone and a younger one replaced him at the security shack, with the previous woman and young guy. Young guy starts searching my truck which was fine and of course a mag that I had forgotten was in my lower glove box. The woman came over, and rather rudely told me she had already given me two chances and now had to deny me. The young fellows looked a bit embarrassed at how she spoke to me. I was devastated and mad at myself but...I really thought it could have been handled better. I gave up, I said thank you, didn't even ask how long I was denied. Returned to the firehouse, retrieved my firearm, and even tho they refused, I left a donation and kept on out their door. I wished I'd talked more to the fellow; he was so nice. But I was fighting tears, and no one sees me do that. Yes, I get I should of double checked my truck, but there were NO two chances. When I rolled up there, I was doing only what I knew from reading the Memorial website and the law of the state. Nowhere on the website does it say be sure and do not have what you think is locked up as the law asks. It does not say what you may do with them if you have driven 1200 miles, two women and two children halfway, and now on your own, and you have a Carry and Conceal for your protection while you travel. They did not ask for my license, drivers or C&C, Or my vehicle registration...nothing. And I'm not sure they even ran my plates. This 61-year-old employee at a grade school for years, husband retired from VFD, drove off, upset for failing at what I wanted to do to surprise my friend's widow. Fast forward to this June ~ I don't take defeat well, and when once again knowing I would be driving my friend back to Pa from Illinois, I made it a mission to go to the Memorial again. I got a hotel room, got up early, left my locked firearm, drove to the Memorial and drove in the gate. The gentleman in the shack, asked those 3 questions which I replied NO NO NO and then he told me to park in that lot, go in, get scanned, and I would have to walk all the way back there. No driving. Fine, even though it was raining, I WAS going to see my friends name on that plaque. In the building I went, they scanned me, and my umbrella, gave me an ID tag, kept my license. Asked me if I'd been there before, and I said yes but didn't make it in, expecting him to ask me why which I would have answered honestly, but he never asked. The fellow noticed I wear an AFO and asked me if I was able to walk all the way back. I told him I had come too far to not do it, one way or the other even in the rain. He told me I could drive my truck back there, but I had to follow the nice security lady in her little golf like cart, and she would wait on me, and I would follow her back. PERFECT!! I followed and got out and made my way to the memorial, took my time, read the bricks on the sidewalk, visited the 911 monument. (My son was born that day, it was a huge moment for me to see this memorial), and after about 45 minutes I followed her back. I got my ID back and thanked them over and over. They treated me as they should, with professionalism, and respectfully. I had the pictures I wanted which my friend's family was so happy to see from someone who took the time to see in person. Now here's the thing, the nice man at the shack took my word, I appreciated that. He didn't search anything. Maybe he has a better gut feeling of who comes thru, or maybe the fact you are not supposed to drive back there, the threat of what's in your truck isn't that important. Then you are scanned.... but those considerate people let me drive back due to my handicap. I believe even if they had of found something I'd forgotten, they would have been more decent about it. So in closing, perhaps the website should be very explicit about their rules and a sign at the gate!! Some people may be driving thru and realize the Memorial is there and last-minute pull in with no knowledge of the rules. Some may drive 1200 miles like myself only to be turned away. I do wonder, would they have looked all thru my luggage, my purse? Or did I just bust myself out because I was an honest person, and rather proud of it. Anyway, regardless of what I went thru, it meant the world to me to finally get to see the Memorial. I again, thank those who were so courteous to me the second time.

My 5 year old daughter and I weren’t allowed in because my wife left a cooler with two warm alcoholic beverages in the back of the car that I didn’t know about. When did they decide to give FEMA and a distinctly military presence control of a firefighter memorial? And why? Is this really what this country has become? Terrified for our children’s future. Bureaucracy at its absolute worst, in my opinion.

Another unknown memorial. It's located on the FEMA Training Campus. You have to show ID for all in the vehicle, and they keep until you leave, and they give everyone in the vehicle an ID Badge. You swap them out when you leave. No firearms or weapons allowed on the installation, and they do a full vehicle inspection. They watch your every move on camera, and tell you where to go when you check in. A lot to go through to get in, but was worth the visit. There is also a 9-11 Firefighters Memorial a couple of hundred feet away.

This memorial is a very important site to visit for all Canadians. The names on the monument are those firefighters that have died in the line of duty or from job related illnesses in their retirement. The service is at 10:30 am on the second Sunday of September. Very meaningful service with families of the Fallen and firefighters from across Canada.

My husband is a Career and Volunteer Firefighter, so we decided to stop by the Memorial on our way through Maryland. I was a little worried getting in, since it is a federal property, and we were traveling with a 2 and 4 year old. I had called ahead to make sure we didn't need birth certificates or anything special for the kids to enter, and they didn't need a thing. We had no problems at all! The security at the gate took a quick look in the car, took our licenses and gave us visitor passes and a map with directions in and out. We were able to easily find it and the parking lot is a very close walk to the memorial. We walked around the grounds of the memorial (we were able to find a few bricks with firefighters my husband used to work with), and it is very short walk across the courtyard to the 9/11 memorial. Was definitely worth the stop by, and do not worry about it being on federal property, it is very easy to get in and out of as long as you have a US license.
