[Thurs., Jun 30,'22] Today was a Picture-Perfect Day to enjoy hours at several local attractions along MacArthur Blvd in Glen Echo, MD (near the beautiful C&O Canal and Potomac River, close to Great Falls in Potomac, MD).
After enjoying a tasty lunch at the 'Irish Inn at Glen Echo', I decided to stop by the Famed "Glen Echo Park", a Historical Amusement Park from its haydays from back in the early 20's through late 40's & Beyond.
It is still open today with limited activities {*check their Website for a more complete list of events & activities...which includes dances, crafts, and an old Carousel!!! :-) }
So many families out and about, walking their dogs, or cycling & jogging by. Plenty of FREE (including ample wheelchair accessible) Parking, plenty of local restaurants to grab a healthy & tasty lunch (sorry -- no 'Fast Food' in this town ... rather, pack a large lunch in a cooler with plenty of drinks). I did see signs for accessible bathrooms.
The grounds are free to enter (at least they are from the side lot, but activities cost). Child-Friendly (though not necessarily low budget...so pack food & drinks & pee before you go), wheelchair & stroller-friendly...some hills but not killer.
I saw signs for a pool and some snack bars and other events/activities, but DO CHECK THEIR WEBSITE before going. Know before you go, what is and isn't available.
Don't forget to wear comfy walking shoes. sun protection (glasses, hat. sunscreen) and brink PLENTY of Cold Drinks (and cold snacks like cold fruit to help hydrate -- watch for how your kids, the elderly, and pets handle the heat...there are shady areas to rest out of the sun).
When you are done, visit the nearby Clara Barton National Historical Site adjacent to the park {*same side parking lot...you never have to move your car). ***Watch out for Speed Cameras along MacArthur Blvd, Clara Barton Pkwy, River Rd, Reservoir Rd (the "Palisade Pkwy"). etc.
Take Family & Friends, take & send Pics, and Enjoy a Terrific Outing! :-)

Although everything was closed due to Covid there is historical info all around this unique park which used to be an amusement park back in the 50s and 60 s
Peeking through the windows of an enclosed carousel built in 1921 was a tease. It was so beautiful, I wished I could see the details from a closer view
There is also a small play area for kids which kids enjoyed

This was an old amusement park. We were there during COVID so we did not see everything that we could have seen but I am still really glad we went.

Glen Echo was an amusement park for years. It closed, I believe in the late 1950s or early 1960s. It is a unique spot with wonderful architecture and a whole new host of attractions, although the original Dentzel carousel horse remains the centerpiece. It hosts regular dances and concerts, as well as classes in the arts. It's a genuine treasure that is well worth your acquaintance.

Their Spanish ballroom is one of the best ballrooms in the US to dance. Great park, great ballroom, great fun. When I lived near the DC area, I produced and narrated Swing Night, a documentary about the DC swing dancing scene. Glen Echo Park's ballroom was where we filmed and what a wonderful night it was.

It looks like time stopped at glen echo. You find old buildings still standing up that make you travel back in time

If you like art - GO. If you like to dance (contra/squares, modern, jazz, ballet, swing) - GO. If you prefer puppets - Go. If you want to ride a world class carousel that is also a work of art - GO. If you want to hear live music - GO. If you want to see a place that was the scene of ugly racism as late at the 1960s, and has now become an open and welcoming place for all people - GO.

Been frequenting Glen Echo Park for well over 30yrs. The updates have been incredible for the art, music, and dance community.

Our family went for a puppet show and stayed for ice cream and a walk around the park. There was a free petting zoo in front of the theater with a great production of Winnie the Pooh. The art gallery was a great stroll as was visiting the potters. We had a great afternoon with the family.

Wow! Spent the entire day at Glen Echo as part of a Montgomery County Leadership group, and we were super impressed with how much the County has done to restore and revive Glen Echo since the County took over the Park's management. The Spanish Ballroom is fully restored to beauty. The Arcade has been rehabbed, and all the theaters and groups within it are polished and professional. The entry to the Park has been restored to its 1950's heyday look (minus the racism). The carousel is BEAUTIFUL and functioning. What a magical jewel in the DC area's crown!
