Today I had an incredible opportunity to touch history through the Marietta House historic home in Glendale, MD. It was so refreshing to learn the stories of the Black humans and their families as the central focus of the tour, rather than the details and highlights of the oppressors! The artifacts, immersive elements and authentic stories literally made me time travel! Thank you so much to the wonderful team at the Marietta House @slaveryinventorydatabase for taking the time with me today!

Highly Recommended by Conductor Dee!

We came out to Marietta house this morning (June 2020) to see the mansion and have the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The entrance to the museum wasn't clearly marked, so we walked around a bit before I called for clarification. (Note, the entrance is around the back on the right side of the house- not up the main walkway). The tour itself was wonderfully informative. We learned about the occupants of course, but the whole tour is crafted to focus on the enslaved people and present the house's history with them as central figures. We had some excellent conversations with the tour guide about the conflicts in Duval's history- in his legal practice, he successfully represented slaves in their bids for freedom, yet did not free any of the people he had enslaved on his property. My children were privy to some thoughtful conversations amongst the tour participants regarding the social and legal complexities he may have been pressured by. This then lead into discussions about what the realities were at the time for those people who did manage to get emancipated. My middle-school aged children also enjoyed the tour, and certainly got more nuanced information than they would have had we been left to explore the property on our own.

Marietta House is being actively researched by professional historians on site and in the local Universities. We aren't able to come to this area very often, but I do hope to come back in a few years and see what additional information the historians have found and how the museum evolves. This is exciting, and certainly a space to visit again. Congratulations to the staff and volunteers for their excellent work.

I toured Marietta initially in July of 2018, and found it so interesting I again took the tour right after Christmas of 2019. I was walking the grounds (which are open to the public-don't let the metal gate and brick columns put you off-their purpose are decorative solely). As I was paying my respects at the small cemetery which adjoins the back of the property (past the wedding venue), a kind lady exited from the property and asked if I was interested in a tour. I said yes, and we went inside, where I met the NPS manager of the property as well. He asked if I was interested in attending their upcoming tea. I explained that I was only passing through, but had taken the tour last year and found this same docent to be highly knowledgeable, yet approachable with any questions, which is why I was taking it again today.

Please be aware that there is NO fee for this tour, but there is a donation box if you are so inclined. In the summer the grounds are also open for a Saturday farmers market that offers fresh produce and delicious food truck fare.

The docent took me through all the rooms, which were tastefully decorated for the holidays. She discussed their customs, including using magnolia leaves from trees surrounding the property as adornments. She also talked about the pecans on the property (something we don't find up North in Michigan). The dining room had faux foods set up on the table and sideboard; they looked real and gave a visual of what a dining experience would have included. The tour took about an hour, but the docent was very willing to linger in each room to ensure that I saw everything each had to offer. Besides the interior of the home, she also talked of the properties surrounding Glenn Dale that had once been a part of this plantation. We did talk about slavery, and she did mention how many enslaved people had toiled here, and the crops that they grew. She also touched on family tragedies that occurred throughout the Duvall history.

The only criticism that I have is that I wish they would have included some information about the slaves. I learned much later through scouring newspaper articles, that some of the slaves had run away. What happened to them? Where were the slave cabins? Where was the slave cemetery? Since the property has been subdivided off over the years, it is now much smaller (250 acres) than it was when enslaved peoples toiled here (the Duvall family plot has been relocated here from the area of the new fire station just down the street). In the future I hope that they will add something about these people, whose blood, sweat and tears made Marietta what it was.

Thank you for visiting Marietta House Museum. We truly appreciate your comments. Please come back to learn about the enslaved families once held at Marietta, including the Butler family, Jackson family, Duckett family and Brown family. We look forward to sharing the multigenerational histories of these families who lived and labored at Marietta in Prince George's County, Maryland.

This time I visited, they were actually open when they said they'd be, which was not the case previously. The house has an interesting history and the tour guide was great. However, expect more of an exhibit space than a house museum. A few family pieces have been returned to the house and there's a good exhibit on the Duvall family, but most of the house is devoted to a rather random display of artifacts. Still, there are some interesting architectural features that the guide will explain. Probably best visited when there is an event going on.

Thank you for visiting Marietta House Museum. Since your visit four years ago, Marietta has documented nearly 200 individuals who were enslaved at this one time tobacco plantation in Prince George's County, Maryland. Please plan your next visit to Marietta House Museum to include the Giving Voice Guided tour.

It took me a while, but I was finally able to really see this home. It is a place that has so much history particularly to the region. It is a must see if you are from Prince George's County, Maryland. However, what you see on the website it not what you see when you arrive. They are only open during the week and not on weekends except for certain events. It may be hard to get a tour, but it is worth it.

I throughly enjoyed my visit today at Marietta! There was a guest speaker Ralph Buglass, he gave a great presentation on the historic case of Brown vs Board of Education. It was such a good history of Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall and the historic case. The Marietta House was decorated for valentine day... lovely red roses and there was light refreshments perfect for this rainy day that we had. Enjoyed meeting and talking to different people and just a wonderful event! I highly recommend for those history buff or anyone else that cares to learn more about Marietta and our history here in Prince George’s County.

The house's website clearly states, "Architectural and Duvall family biographical tours are given the first Friday of every month between 12 noon and 4pm." I was there on Friday, July 7th at a little before 2 pm and the door was locked and the lights were out. No sign on the door other than an emergency number for the park police. I walked around the building and saw two cars parked behind what looked like a modern extension of the building. Didn't see anyone and no one came out, so I left disappointed. It is extremely frustrating to take a trip to a historic site only to find out the published hours are wrong. Prince George's County needs to fix their website so other visitors don't have their time wasted like I did.

Dear Friends, We are happy to inform you that since your visit five years ago, Marietta House Museum has been transformed into a fully operational historic house museum. Marietta House Museum houses the histories of multiple generations of families, free and enslaved, who lived and labored on the roughly 600 acres that made up Marietta Manor. The historic site holds the stories of how life was lived in agricultural Maryland from the Federal Era, Antebellum years, Civil War period, Jim Crow and Reconstruction through to the rise of the modern Civil Rights era in the early 20th century.

Had the opportunity to take a tour of the mansion this past Saturday (Sept 21) while attending an event entitled Jazz on the Lawn. Thourougly enjoyed the occasion. Our guide during the tour was an elderly woman who didn't have the most pleasant disposition I might add but most of the tourists overlooked it. While on the tour someone raises the question if Duval High School was named after Gabriel Duvall. She curtly answered and said "not really". A little later another toursist asked where were the slaves buried and again she answered and said "well they weren't buried here"! I was a bit taken aback at her attitude that clearly exuded she didn't act as if she wanted to be there. I also was a little put off because she acted as if the questions bein asked were offensive.

I did a bit of research myself and found that Duval High School was indeed named after Gabriel Duvall! I have not done the research that will answer the slave burial but trust me I will! Save for the encounter with the tour guide it was quite interesting. It is amazing how much history is right here in our own backyard in Prince George's County. I am looking forward to attending more events at Marietta and this has driven me to make a list of other historical homes within the county to visit! By the way, do let the tour guide know that Duval High was named after Gabriel Duvall.
