The inside tour was very interesting. Tour guide had so much historic knowledge. It was a little toasty inside today but worth going if you find it open!

This is another place that I believe was great tourist spot back in the day, but now not so much. It's like Washington's headquarters it's just something to look at, can't go in. There are picnic tables around. The Toll House is not in very good condition for being a historical landmark. We have beautiful towns, but as far as history goes, we lack, we've got a wonderful history, but the landmarks aren't anything, but walk around or drive by attractions where in places like Williamsburg, Washington DC...etc. everything is in pristine condition and things to be able to see and learn more from. I think either the county or the Historical Society should do something to make our historic landmarks more than just something to look at the exterior and clean it up a bit. Most people these days that come here as tourists are people riding the C&O Canal or the Great Allegheny Passage.

This is the real deal. You get to go inside and see how the tollkeeper's family lived. On the outside you can see the tolls listed for the 1st National road west. If you get to upstairs to the bedroom you can actually see how the tollkeeper could get up at night and tell from which direction the travelers were coming.

As avid geocachers, we travel for miles around. We have been in La Vale several times caching. Thanks to the person who hid a cache to bring people to the toll house. it is beautiful and a peek through the windows show beautiful antique furniture during that time period. The educational perspective that you glean from this historical site is amazing.

Built in 1835 for the National Road, the toll houses were used to collect money for road maintenance, which was the responsibility of the states. There's another one in Petersburg, PA. It has a unique, 7-sided architecture. The rates of toll are posted.
The National Road, a federal project, ran from Cumberland to (eventually) Zanesville, Ohio, and was a work of "Internal improvements." this opened a path from the mountains to the seacost, and port towns such as Baltimore,

Had to see the tool house and gate poles on National highway. Impressive Maryland has preserved the house to educate folks on the road and it's historical significance. It is a must for everyone to see and admire.

This toll house is one of the few original remaining on the Old National Road which ran from Cumberland Maryland to Vandalia Illinois in the early to mid-1800s. I don't think this toll house is open to the public. It has never been open when we have passed by, but is worth a stop to look and see what a real toll house looked like on this historic road. The government funded the road in its early stages, but after a while, it was left to individual states to fund the maintenance of the road, so toll houses were built so that tolls collected could go to finance the repair of this highly used road. There are two toll houses that are open now and then to the public, the Addison (PA) toll house and the Searight toll house, also in PA. I was able to visit those on my recent National Road trip and got to go inside and see the old furnishings and climb to the top and look out the top bedroom window. Read about the National Road and the importance it made in our nation's history.

Of course you need to see the toll house, this is a piece of history along the national road. Don't expect a museum as the interior is not open to the public, at least when I visited, but I could get a sense of the place from the plaques placed outside. Worth a few minutes of your time to visit.

Very interesting, it would be nice if it would be unlocked so you could see the inside of this of the building.
