We had an exceptional time exploring Calvert Cliffs State Park! There's a ton of wildlife to see, and if you make it to the beach, it's virtually private. We found some amazing fossils and 1 shark tooth.

The red trail is the easiest trek to the beach. It is still almost 2 miles and does have a little rough terrain. The hike is through wetlands which was surprising to us. I'm sure later in the year bug spray would be a must. If you are searching for sharks teeth I would recommend taking a sifter or screen. It's not necessarily a lay on the beach type of place, more of an adventure. There are a couple of picnic tables. We enjoyed seeing the wetlands and the interesting cliffs. It's a shame you can't look for fossils in front of the cliffs any longer.

Very cool place to visit! A 2-mile hike leads you to a beach where people finds fossilized shells, shark teeth, etc. it can be a bit crowded, but it’s a very interesting experience for nature-lovers or fossil hunters!

Too bad the beach and scenery were only accessed after a 1.8 mile walk to and 1.8 mile walk back. We didn’t take as much because of the long walk and made the mistake of leaving our water in the car. We did not find shark teeth but a young man had a few tiny ones in a container. There were no jellyfish so the 4 grandsons aged 10-13 spent a lot of time swimming. Few shells but lots of interesting rocks small to medium sized. There were tidal pools and little streams entering the bay so kids of all ages enjoyed this. They even caught a couple of crabs and small fish to put into a pail filled with water for all to see. The cliffs we could see were impressive but they were closed to all. We saw a couple of young rangers walking around and they were friendly to talk with.

I cannot emphasize how difficult the 1.8 mile trail was. The trail itself we walked to the beach wound through shady forests with swampy areas filled with frogs and lily pads. There were occasional benches to rest on and even though it was 1.8 miles it had few uphill areas.

Walking from the beach to the parking area, we decided to walk a service road that was the same distance. Mistake! Although wider and with no tree roots to trip over, it wasn’t as scenic and was 75% uphill. No water, it was a struggle to finish.

I’m 69 and in moderate good physical condition. I kept thinking of all the people who couldn’t experience this state park beach because of the walk.

Very graded trails for hikers and beach goers. 1.8 miles each way so only for the hearty. Beach is bare bones-pristine. Porta potties are not kept up. Trails are meant more for hikers. Lots of picnic tables surrounding parking lot. Regular bathroom facility only at parking lot. Maryland veterans state park card accepted here.

The bugs were SO bad and the walk was long. The cliffs were closed and there is a swamp right next to the path and the beach.

We walked the two miles in for a very short, swampy beach and no cliffs open. Definitely just go to Flag Ponds down the road!

The shortest trail to the beach was a nice walk. While the trails are family and pet friendly, we noticed that many kids and dogs were too tired to walk the entire trail to beach and parents pushed too hard. It’s important to take your kids and pets abilities into account prior to pushing them to continue on the trail. It’s a 4 mile walk that is hilly on many different types of terrain. A couple times we witnessed kids and dogs laying down on the trail as parents pushed them to keep moving. The beach is very small and crowded, no place to sit. We enjoyed the walk and the views of the cliffs and water. The area along the cliffs is closed on both sides due to recent landslides. There was no area to search for fossils. Overall the scenery was nice and walk was peaceful. Walk to the beach is not suitable for small children or dogs not used to walking far distances.

We had very bad experience 😭. I had car full of kids (5 kids), we made sure the park is open, so we drove for 2 hours to get to Calvert Cliffs State Park. When we arrived they would not let us in because the parking was full. Ok makes sense. They would not let us wait to get in, so we don't block the road. Ok makes sense. While I was talking to the people at the entrance couple of cars left the park. I was like, ok no you have room at the parking! However, one car left, one can enter does not work at this park 😳🙄 crazy and doesn't make sense!!!! And what was the warst of all, the attitude!!! The attitude of the employees was " go somewhere else ( the few places that they recommend are super lame. I have been there. Nothing to do, but sit on the grass) . Don't even try to wait and come back. We will not let anyone in for many hours (why!!!!??? Cars are leaving. There is parking available!). You can't even swim there anyway (wich is not true!!!) They were very not friendly, not trying to help. I just had to drive back home for another two hours with car full of upset crying kids. Not a fun spring break day 😞. Why can't they ask people to loop around till there is an available spot at the parking lot. And let a car in if there is a spot. How can you plan a trip if all you can see is that the park is open, but there is no way to get in or no helpful employees to help you. It feels like there job is quite opposite!

We liked our trip to Calvert Cliffs State Park, almost every aspect of it. The trails were not crowded in May. The information was sufficient. We hiked the trail network, but the Red Trail is our favorite. It leads to the iconic cliffs and lovely scenic shore spots. It is very easy for just about everybody with a wooden boardwalk in many parts. The nature is fascinating! You can walk by some futile but impressive, a bit weird projects aiming at eradication of reeds with plastic covers. Of course, the reeds grow around the plastic... The legendary cliffs are covered with Myocene fossils so amazing, so many, so fascinating. Certainly, material for great pictures. The visit to Calvert Cliffs State Park should be perhaps followed by the visit to the marine museum in Solomons where one can learn more on local geology..
