South Mountain west bound - Don’t know why this facility is closed each time I pass through to get a map. Fourth time today -28 June 2024. Summer business hours posted as 9am to 5pm Wednesday to Sunday. Each time o stopped by the last week, it’s been locked, with no other notification.

Nice open area for dogs and kids to run around. Picnic tables for lunches too. It was raining when we stopped, but we were able to enter the visitors center. They had an abundance of information for every area of Maryland. Also couple photo and informational displays. Nicely done. I would suggest that the worker greets the incoming people and ask if they needed any help. A friendly welcome is always nice, especially at a welcome center.

This side was very busy on my way back home and despite having many problems on the other side of the mountain with the sister rest stop this one was very clean and quiet.

Both the south mountain east and west welcome centers are maintained very well. They have spacious rest areas that have some picnic tables, plenty of parking and large restrooms that are very clean. They also have a center where you can pick up brochures for most of the counties in Maryland and a couple little things for out of state as well. There are vending machines and even a playground for the children.

I don't care for the new welcome center. The old one was more welcoming and woodsy. This new one is too modern, cold, and bright. That's progress..I guess.

Wow! Last year I searched endlessly for rest stops with playgrounds where the kids could let some bottled up energy flow. I was unable to find any in Virginia and ended up at public parks that were close to the interstate. This year, we just happened to stop here to use the restroom before driving on to Baltimore. This is the FIRST welcome center OR rest stop that I have found that actually has a playground for the kids.
Overall, I was impressed with this welcome center. The restrooms were clean. They had men's, women's and even a family restroom too! The map out front was nice. The playground was great for little kids. There was ample parking. There were several vending machines available and they were even under a covered awning. I believe there was a water fountain and a pet walking area too. There were benches to rest on and picnic tables should you want to stop here to picnic. There was a travel information kiosk outside in addition to information available inside the welcome center. I would recommend as a rest stop OR if you are seeking travel info for the area We will be sure to stop here again on our annual trek around Baltimore to pick up I-81.

A shout out to James for helping us out with all the maps we need for our road trip! He was very friendly and helpful!
The restrooms were clean and stocked and the interpretive signs are very interesting regarding the surrounding historical events. Well done!

Great stop on our way to DC! Very big and very nice outdoor playground. Lots of places to sit outside. Great information center and extremely helpful staff/volunteers. Perfect place to stop on a long Roadtrip, relax a little and let the kids play.

Clean bathrooms, tourist information, vending machines, a place to empty the dog. Fairly new facility, with views eastbound toward Frederick. Easy on and off I-70
