great
2021年3月
although there were only allowed 2 spectators per family due to COVID they were well organized to stay with CDC guidelines. Felt very safe. It was great. Kept everyone out of the rain also.

Convention Events
2019年9月
We only drove by the Roland E. Powell Convention Center as it was between offered events but I can only say it is quite accessible to the hotels and has a wonderful view of the ocean. Perhaps one day we will be able to visit for surely, with all other events OC has, this has to be as great.

Had a great time, plenty of parking. Vendors in the parking lot, as well as inside. Couldn't really ask for a better venue.

We were roaming around and met a gentleman named Larry. He was very helpful and pointed us in the right direction regarding local hot spots and attractions. Thank you, Larry!

Sharon is a saint!!!
2019年6月 • 夫妻情侣
After having an issue at the jellyfish festival, Sharon was so kind and went out of her way to make me feel welcome in Ocean City. She mentioned that she worked the box office at the convention center, that 's why I posted here.

MidAtlantic Symphony at Powell Convention Center: Opportunities Lost
2019年4月 • 独自旅游
For several years now, the MidAtlantic Symphony Orchestra has been playing two concerts a year at the Roland E. Powell Convention Center in Ocean City, Maryland, repeating the same program played at the Todd Performing Arts Center at Chesapeake College in Wye Mills. This year, the final concert included Sibelius's Finlandia, Ravel's Piano Concerto in G and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 "Choral". I attended both concerts, specifically to compare venues and performances.

The facility at Chesapeake College is not a music hall. The acoustics are poor. There is no sound canopy over the stage. Commencement exercises, faculty assemblies, lectures and other activities require electronic voice amplification. The acoustics at the Powell Convention Center in Ocean City are better. The small canopy over the stage helps a bit. I suspect that the hall was designed to house many kinds of performers, favoring those using amplification, like rock music concerts.

The facilities at the Powell Convention Center are ample and modern. Parking has always been easy. The lobby is large and well kept. The bathrooms are easily accessible and kept clean. The escalators work. The seats are well marked and have excellent line-of-vision with the stage. There are many places close to the Convention Center where hungry patrons may find a bite to eat.

For this concert, the MidAtlantic Symphony was joined by the Southern Delaware Chorale and the Carter Legacy Singers. The large chorus sang well in the Finlandia and with remarkable gusto in the finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The soloists, Allysa Packard, Jordan Swett, Israel Lozano and Kevin Short were outstanding, particularly in the second quartet of the Ode to Joy.

Conductor Julien Benichou led the orchestra and chorus with verve and sharp, precise rhythms. At the Chesapeake College performance, which had been delayed due to an accident on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge resulting in a decimated orchestra, Maestro Benichou was considerably agitated trying to get more rubato and volume from his anemic first violins; by the time of the Ocean City performance, his conducting was more controlled and measured.

This concert could have been "great", but opportunities were lost. It is difficult to play Beethoven's Ninth with only six or eight first violins. The power is just not there. In addition, the tympani repeatedly drowned out the orchestra throughout the performance. Pianist Michael McHale played a remarkable Ravel Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (and annoying noisemakers). Having assembled a talented pianist, voice soloists, chorus and orchestra, why not play Beethoven's Choral Fantasy Opus 80 instead of the jazzy, insecure Ravel Concerto?

Many concert-goers, chorus members and symphony players leave the hall after Beethoven's Ninth humming the Ode to Joy and wishing for more. Why not an encore? The last variation and the coda, from Freude, Tochter aus Elysium to the end, is a perfect encore. Everybody gets to sing or play, takes only four minutes and it usually brings down the house in applause and ovations.

The Powell Convention Center is a good place for classical music concerts, although not perfect. This concert by the MidAtlantic Symphony Orchestra was quite good, even considering the missed opportunities. Next year's performances at the Powell Convention Center include Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, orchestrated by Ravel.

Parking is horrible. Suggestions is to park beside convention at the restaurant, there’s parking near of back of that.

It said no food and drinks brought in but no one seemed to listen to that much.
