PROS
* Beautiful green oasis in urban/suburban areas
* "an oasis of nature" from the urban concrete
* Long winding shaded trails
* Walking paths all totally very shaded by dense tall trees
* Access from many points and neighborhoods
* Populated by deer and birds/ducks/swans
CONS
* Significant traffic volume on parts where there is a road
* Signage for directions is not the clearest
* Frequented by other walkers- many pushing baby carriages
* Trails shared by a good number of bicyclists- without any designated lane at all!!
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... when I came out for my daily 0530am power walk, and expected to wander around streets and neighborhoods and shopping centers, but found an entrance into the woods and was entranced and thrilled to find all the paths in this lush shaded green park.... and then, every morning was another adventure- wandering through the paved trees and ending up in Wheaton or other parts of Silver Spring. I always spent at least half an hour, and once I walked for almost two hours. Exploring the park became my standard default activity from 0530am during my two week vacation there.

For my bicycling money, Sligo Creek Parkway is superior to Beech Drive (Rock Creek Park). Both are gentle downhill pleasures, shady cathedrals of lush, green trees, giving way to an occasional park, all along a cooling stream. Like Beech, large sections of the Parkway are closed to cars on weekends beginning Friday, turning both roads into the quietest (and safest) of trails with ample room for all recreators in both directions. Cyclists are best served by staying on the road (the parallel trail is there for the anxious biker or those with children).
However, unlike Beech, the entire Parkway is wide enough and less intensely traveled, making its entire 5.5 miles navigable by bike. With some exceptions on the lower (closer to DC) Parkway, the road is in excellent condition, unlike the long stretches of busted-up roads on Beech. I also recommend the Tipico Dominicano food truck for a sloppy pork sandwich (or Jamaican pasty) you, as a cyclist, have no doubt earned. After lunch at Tipico, you can continue south on the Sligo Creek Trail through woods and parks for another two miles, all the way to the Northwest Branch Trail and the wetlands of the Anacostia River Trail. For an early dinner, detour to South Hyattsville for some Senegalese (Chez Dior) or to Mount Rainier for some Soul/comfort food (Pennyroyal Station, Sweet and Natural, or Dodah's, the last two vegan). You've earned it!

This rec trail meanders through a valley along Sligo Creek in Silver Spring area. It is loaded with thick, tall trees so makes a great place to walk on a hot day. Watch for fast cyclists!

A good number of people took advantage of the nice weather to take advantage of enjoying nature. The wooded pave and unpaved trails, creek, picnic areas and bridges add up to a great visit whether you choose to walk or run, bicycle, or simply sit and enjoy the scenery. The creek is filled with rocks where several children were playing in the water. There are also several playgrounds scattered throughout for children to enjoy. Some of the areas were muddy because of the recent flooding of the creek. Most everyone wore a mask because of the Covid-19 virus. Enjoyable day.

This scenic park is actually a creek-side trail system reminiscent of its larger cousin in the District of Columbia, Rock Creek Park. Might be a tad less traveled and not as expanse, yet, as peaceful and relaxing for respite on a busy day. I pulled over to one of many parking areas and enjoyed the cool of trees and the sounds of nature. A very peaceful place to meditate and think with no fear of harm. Noticed a regular police presence in passing vehicles which reinforced my feeling of security.

This is one of those places tourists probably don't get to, but it's special enough for tourists and a fantastic resource for locals.
There is a long walking/running/biking etc. trail next to the creek, set in the woods, as well as a parkway (sections of it close on Sundays so you can walk or ride on the road as well, which is fun). There a playgrounds and other recreational resources (grills, exercise stations, basketball courts, tennis courts) dotted along its length, a lot of picturesque bridges. You can see herons and deer.
Sligo is a well-used and loved resource. There were recent improvements made to the drainage, etc. Great place to walk - a lot of really tall tulip trees. Beautiful in the autumn.

This is a large park that goes from Takoma Park to Wheaton. The walking trails are excellent and level, so it is a great place to walk. A golf course, soccer fields, barbecues, and tennis courts are scattered. Through the several mile strip of park, so there is plenty to do. I have aways felt safe during the day, but it is very dark at night, so I would be careful.

Beautiful green spaces in the middle of this DC urban canter. The park is made up of walking / running/ biking trails with playgrounds and picnic areas throughout. A well cared for natural environment for residents and visitors!

Great for hiking and walking your dog. It follows a stream and links to paved trails that lead all the way to Anacostia at least 15 miles away.

This is a pleasant. local trail for a walk, run, or cycle when you don't have the time for a longer trek. The trail is most pleasant from University to the hospital.
