One of the busiest Thai temple in town. Super busy and congested during their yearly festivals which always offers traditional Thai food and snacks

The Thai Buddhist Temple and also known as Wat Thai (which means Thai Temple) is located on Layhill Road in upper Silver Spring. As a place, it is just another monastery for religious performing event for Buddhists in the area and other visitors. As for visitors who are not members of the community or not Buddhists, it is just a place to see or talk to lay people and monks of the topic of your interest. However, to fully enjoy the place, visitors should come to visit during special cultural and religious related event. The temple also provides other non religious activities such as language and program for foreigners and heritage children.

I only go to the temple during their new years and when they have food stalls. During the Wat Thai festival around April, it is very crowded and noisy and parking is difficult but the food is excellent. They bring in over 20 restaurants or so to sell thai food that is heavenly. Skewers, soup, mango rice, sweet desserts, deep fried bananas and sweet potatoes, pad thai, mussels, and many other delicacies can be found if you dont mind the long waits in some of the lines. It is a festival and celebration with many cultural Thai activities. The temple itself is glorious.

Wat Thai Buddhist Temple has a New Year festival each Spring. It is a great time to enjoy Thai street food and see interesting things.
Keep an eye on the group's web site in April to see when it will happen in next year:
Google: Wat Thai DC
The deal this year was parking at the Glenmont Metro and take the free yellow school bus shuttle to the site down to 13440 Layhill Road, Silver Spring, MD. We went around 10 AM and things were starting to get crowded.
A lot of tents were set up with folks cooking all kinds of street food. One we loved was the folks from Ruan Thai, a restaurant in Wheaton, MD that rocks and they had quite a following. It was almost a way to see who had the "good stuff" as you walked around the parking lot. If you could see a long line, it was a sure sign that was a tent that had some good food.
Most tents had things for a cheap rate and you could pick up a dish for a few bucks. You did have to look at what was going on....some kitchens were not so well run and prep of the food would take VERY long and so you had to check to see how fast they were cranking out the food also.

We happened to be in the D.C. when a significant Thai Buddhist prayer day came up and my wife asked me to find a Theravada place of worship to visit. I found Wat Thai through an online search and drove to the site with the help from the GPS.
We found workers, among them several monks, busy at work enlarging the wat. We had the interior of the prayer hall to ourselves and, after praying, had a look around. From the inside it could have been a wat in Thailand. Not everything would be easily understandable for those unfamiliar with Thai culture. The wat isn't designed to handle independent visitors. It is intended as a place for Thai residents of the D.C. area to gather for religious events and to pray. Having said that, for those who consider themselves to be Buddhists it is certainly a good place to come for prayer.
