Holiday Decor brightens a beautiful mansion
Visited the Garden Club's holiday show at the Crosby Mansion. We've visited flower shows at the mansion before, but never at Christmas time. Each and every room was meticulously and beautifully decorated. It was well worth the admission fee and the free, with admission, cider and cookies were a wonderful treat.

Brilliant craftsmanship and intriguing stories!
This 1890s addition of almost 30 opulent rooms to a simple 1830s Cape Cod house is truly unique. It's magnificent craftsmanship has been lovingly restored by dedicated, largely volunteer, workers over the last 30 years.

It can only currently open briefly (10a - 2p) on the first and third Sundays in July and August, due to the limited number of docent volunteers. These expert docents make it well worth fitting in a visit, however - allow at least a couple of hours. They have great stories about its inception, construction and original operation from the 1890s to 1920s, as well as its checkered history since.

My family had a wonderful time touring the Crosby Mansion. With a donation of $5.00 per adult and children being free it is a great value for a fun afternoon. The docents are so knowledgable and friendly. It’s truly special how this home was built to preserve the original family home and the loving restoration of the volunteers is evident. Even my teenage children had a great time exploring and learning the history of the home. A fun afternoon!

Great tour by wonderful docents

July Saturday tour on the way to the beach for the day. We had always WONDERED what was in this mansion, and now we know! Highly recommended. It was $5 each for adults in our group and a bargain. House was beautiful but the history was the best. Crosby made his money thru liquor, and married his 2nd wife 20 years his junior, so you know there’s some more interesting stuff here. The Friends of Crosby Mansion have done an amazing job lovingly restoring the place since the early 90s. Glad we stopped!

Monument to an earlier time
The Albert Crosby Mansion is a monument to an earlier time. Located in Brewster, Massachusetts, the three-story, 35-room home overlooking Cape Cod Bay was built by a local man who moved to Chicago and made his fortune producing distilled alcohol which he sold to the U.S. Army during the Civil War. The house doesn't compare to the Gilded Age mansions in Newport, Rhode Island. But the Crosby mansion, named Tawasentha after Longfellow's poem, Song of Hiawatha, is a testament to opulence, grandeur and painstaking graftsmanship. Crosby spared no expense in building and furnishing his home, which was completed in 1888 and inspired by the grand style of Chicago's Gold Coast and Prairie Street mansions owned by Potter Palmer and Marshall Field. It features a 60-foot viewing tower, 15 fireplaces with imported tile, hand-carved mahogany and oak walls, a parlor fashioned after one at the Palace of Versailles, an entrance duplicating one at Buckingham Palace, a two-story billiard room, marble sinks and floors in the baths and gas lighting and heating throughout. Because of the expensive construction needs, the Old Colony Railroad laid a side track to the site. The mansion's crowning glory was a two-story, 75-foot by 50-foot art gallery filled with valuable paintings and sculpture, including works by El Greco and Albert Bierstadt and Childe Hassan. When Crosby died in 1906 at the age of 83, his widow opened the art gallery to the public one day a week in the summer in return for the town not raising her taxes. Among the famous people who visited the gallery were Mark Twain, Helen Keller and the Duke of Wales.

Built Out of Love for His Wife
2017年4月 • 夫妻情侣
The yellow and white home with views of Cape Cod Bay was once the home of native son Albert Crosby. Crosby moved to Chicago and made his fortune making distilled alcohol which was sold to the army during the Civil War. At the Chicago Opera House, which he owned, he met and married one of his show girls, 20-years younger his junior, named Matilda. When he brought her back to Brewster, she did not like the 4-room house so he built a mansion that incorporated the family homestead. When Matilda entertained in the mansion and things got too hectic for him, he would retreat into his family homestead. The three-story home has 35 rooms and was named “Tawasentha”. The house and land were seized by eminent domain by the state of Massachusetts. Friends of Crosby Mansion saved the mansion from destruction and are in the process of restoring it to its full glory. Famous visitors included the Duke of Wales, Helen Keller and Samuel Clemens.

This unique house has a lot of stories to tell. It is being lovingly restored bit by bit by the Friends of the Crosby Mansion. On Sunday afternoons in the summer it is open to the public for a very small fee--visit and learn about the interesting structure of the house and its history.

Time well spent visiting a historic by-gone era of Cape Cod

The Crosby Mansion in Brewster is a 35-room page from Cape Cod’s history that is well worth a visit any time you happen to be in the area when they are hosting Open Houses. I had the fortunate opportunity to visit the Crosby Mansion during the Nauset Garden Club’s “Tis the Season” – 2016 Christmas at the Crosby Mansion, and this was a true back in time experience. The Nauset Garden Club does this three-day event every three years, so the next one is not due until 2019.

Every room is painstakingly decorated for Christmas for the period when Albert & Matilda Crosby lived here. Every room had at least one Christmas tree, and the rooms were decorated with a theme/motif done by a member or team from the Nauset Garden Club. The house has 13 fireplaces, and they were decorated to simulate an active fire.

One of the highlights was the Tawasentha Room (dining room) that utilized the '12 Days of Christmas' throughout. This included the china place setting, napkins, ornaments and figures around the room and windows, on the fireplace, etc. It was interesting to see other guests trying to remember all the verses and then located the appropriate figure or picture representing that verse.

At the end of the viewing, there was a garden room set up serving hot cider and cookies, and both were just delightful. The Garden Club also had tables set up selling various hand-made Christmas crafts.

While this “Tis the Season” event by the Nauset Garden Club is something to behold, do not wait three years to visit the Crosby Mansion, because a visit any time is definitely time well spent visiting a historic by-gone era of Cape Cod.

Certainly a hidden gem with rare open houses!
2016年8月 • 夫妻情侣
From what I can gather this site is only open for 4 Sundays in Aug. ? May be open in June for Brewster in Bloom or at a special event during Christmas. Watch local papers for info. The preservation society runs open houses for a $5 donation, but higher entry amounts at other times due to fund raising of other's events. Weddings, events can be held here also. A nice job of restoration is being done. Worth seeing.
The original summer cottage is still intact and the existing 35 room mansion is built around it! Deceiving from the outside!
Take a tour of the rooms for all the history. Handouts given if you would just like to amble around on your own.
Suggestion would be for the volunteers to have someone at the door just to take the entry fee and move on to another who could direct people to acclimate themselves
to what their choices are once in the door. Also, the entry is loud with voices and when upstairs it is hard to hear the docent at times if standing just above the entry noise. The volunteers are nice and eager to give information. There are gorgeous views of the bay. There could be more restoration completed over time, all of the donations go right back into this project. There ARE restrooms on the first floor !!!
New and clean. Plenty of parking. Look for the sign out on Rt 6A in Brewster, on bay
north side of Rd. Usually 10-3 open house times. Not far down Crosby Rd on the left.
Hope you get there.

We were fortunate that one of the few open houses offered at the Crosby Mansion was held during our visit to the Cape. What a treasure! It's got a most interesting history. The tour itself, however, could have been handled better. It began on the second floor, and the greeter at the door on the first floor sent up way too many guests at one time. Our guide was therefore overwhelmed, and we were mostly sent from room to room on our own, to just gaze in each one. Crowd control would be appreciated here. Although there were docents in a number of the rooms, they were already engaged by other visitors. Still a worthwhile visit. Essentially free, but a $5 donation at the door is "requested", which we were glad to make.
