The house is set up by era and the walk through with a guide is a nice trip through the history of Old Deerfield. This is just one of the many properties on the Deerfield "Street" owned by Historic Deerfield.

The person who started building this most interesting house was my 7th great uncle, Ebenezer Wells. Through a guided tour, the house leads you from around 1735 through the next century with its additions. It was first painted blue in 1802. Who would have guessed! I was fascinated by the early storage barrels that were made out of huge
logs which were burned on the inside so the colonials could hollow them out for storage to keep out the vermin.

This was very interesting, because you got to see how life in colonial times changed, from the early 1700s when they first settled Deerfield to when they got more safe and prosperous. They accomplished this by having each room shown in a different time period.

Guide was very knowledgeable and eager to answer all questions. House tour was very interesting - gave a great view of how people lived in late 1700s thru mid 1800s.

Make sure you make time to visit this house as it shows changes in the area homes over the years. Each room shows you a different time period. I am more interested in history, not antiques so this was a must see for me. My teenager enjoyed it too.

All the houses, museum and silver exhibit provide the same quality of information. It is all limited to short periods in all houses.

The Wells-Thorn House is one of the houses that is in the Historic Deerfield museum. it can be visited on its own for $5.00. You must take a tour. Tours are given on the hour (10-4) and last about 30-45 minutes. it is better to buy a one day admission for $12.00 and visit several of the Historic Deerfield buildings. It is best to become a member for a year -- $60.00 for two -- and visit all the houses as many times as you want for an entire year. it is impossible to visit all of Historic Deerfield in one day.
