Peter Capodagli, the walk leader, is hugely informative about the history of Fitchburg. Starting with the Battles House, next to his art gallery on Main Street, he provides an impressive recounting of the history of the Upper Common area where the Boulder now sits. The tour continues down to the intersection of Rollstone and Main streets, where we were told about the 11 churches that were within a very short walking distance, including the still-standing Richardson-inspired Iglesia Casa de Gracia y Restauración. The walk continues on the Upper Rollstone St. Bridge (1977) that crosses the Nashua River and overlooks the Lower Rollstone St. Bridge, which is one of only 5 Parker Truss bridges in the U.S., and the oldest one in Massachusetts. The walk continues past the German Church on Rollstone St. and up Rollstone Hill. Interestingly enough, we are told that no one really knows why it is called Rollstone Hill, although there are at least three major theories. The walk up the hill to the summit is an easy-to-medium ascent and the view from the top spectacular. Along the way, we found out about the six quarry companies that mined the hill for granite and that would send out 40 train loads of granite a day for building structures all around the country. Much needed work is being done to improve the paths, and I look forward to going on this walk again next year. If you are a Fitchburg resident and/or are interested in local history, this walk is not to be missed.

The walk was very interesting with a very informative guide, Peter. It lasted almost 4 hours and was a great experience. My wife and I did the walk. We highly recommend it. We learned a lot of Fitchburg history we were not aware of.

This was recommended to me by a family member and it far exceeded my expectations. Not only is it a beautiful walk up Rollstone Hill with great views of the city and surrounding countryside, but it was chuck full of the fascinating history of an American city and its notable residents at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Our guide, Peter C. , is extremely knowledgeable and a skilled presenter. He wove a great story about the industrialists, artists, leaders, and hardworking residents of this interesting old American city along a walking tour of its buildings, monuments and unique geology. If you love history and geology, you can’t miss! One caution- parts of the walk up Rollstone hill might be difficult if you have old knees (like me!), but the paths are being continuously improved and there are alternative routes that are very easy. Check with Peter if you have any concerns.

Nothing is more enjoyable than learning something interesting from someone who is passionate about the subject, as Peter is about Fitchburg history. His passion is matched by his knowledge and his ability to weave stories flush with characters from other centuries. I’m impressed with Peter’s involvement in the Rock Walk and his work to ensure easy access to the history for all future participants.
I’m not a native of Fitchburg, but my husband and sister-in-law are, and I think I was as fascinated by all the history as they were. I took notes on my phone of historic figures and events so that I could do a little research later.
The walk itself is nicely paced, with many stops along the way. The rock graffiti is an ever-changing expression of art for the masses, and oddly enough, is an amusing juxtaposition with the natural surroundings.
I highly recommend signing up for the next Rock Walk – it’s like stepping into a history book, complete with narration.

What a wonderful adventure! Peter has a wealth of knowledge about the history of Fitchburg. Born and raised in Fitchburg I didn’t know most of that history. Makes me proud to live here in the “Burg”. I would do it again and highly suggest it! The views were gorgeous from the top.

Absolutely recommend the Rollstone Hill Walk to all. I’m 76 and the walk is very doable. Not being from the area, I found the presentation and depth of the historical Fitchburg information as narrated by Peter along the walk to be totally engaging. The day itself was spectacular with bright blue sky and fall foliage. I’ll probably do the walk again…. maybe when I’m 80. Art

I just completed my third Rock Walk and I enjoyed every minute of it. Peter's enthusiasm for Fitchburg history is contagious. I brought two people along who did not grow up in the area, but they found the facts about Fitchburg and the quarry to be fascinating. I was also impressed with the improvements that have been made to the trails. I am in my mid-seventies and not particularly athletic, but I found the hike to be quite "do-able." This whole experience is unique and free. What a wonderful way to spend a few hours.

We learned so much about the history of Fitchburg during the guided Rock Walk. Our guide Peter was so knowledgeable, he was able to give details, and answer all questions that came up. The walk itself was beautiful, the views were amazing! It helped that the weather was perfect walking weather, sunny, with a little breeze.
