Nice view of the River. Rest of the place is chaotic and dirty. Lots of empty space. Other buildings on the property not part of the tour. No information about enormous shoe on property. Interesting stones on the ground but no info. Driveway entry is blocked off and there is no indication of how to enter.

Very unwelcoming lobby that could use a good cleaning. The view was nice but that was about it. The place needs major updating. There is water damage, peeling painting, and a musty old smell. Don’t pay for a tour. Careful of stumps and holes if you try to walk around the property. The famous worshipping tree died.

The multiple tales in Haverhill’s history come to life in this lovely house museum. Haverhill’s history is the valley’s history too!

I was visiting Haverhill for the first time looking for information about my ancestors who first settled the area - the Haynes and the Ladds. I thought the Buttonwoods Museum would be a good place to start my search. I was not wrong!

My guide,Tom, personalized the tour of the Buttonwoods Museum detailing the long history of the Haverhill and how my family played an important part. I found out that my family tree includes Hannah Duston who figures prominently Haverhill history. Tom directed me to the cemetery where my Ladd and Haynes ancestots are buried.

The tour of the mansion was well-worth the visit. I was able to better understand how different life was for Haverhill residents/settlers hundreds of years ago. The exhibit room even had articles that dated over a much longer period of time.

Although I was at the museum for about an hour and a half but was not able to examine all the objects. It would be best to allow 2-3 hours to fully appreciate what the Museum has to offer. There is also a gift store and a collection of Haverhill focused books that are not easily found elsewhere.

I plan to return to the Museum in July for another visit. This time I will bring my family!

We arrived exactly at 3:30, hoping to catch the last of the day, and rang the bell as the sign poated on the door instructed. 30 seconds later, William opened the door and welcomed us in and promised us a special guided tour that would last until 5:00 PM closing.
Wow, what a wonderful and educational experience, Bill was extreamly knowledgable and guided us through the facility and house sharing his first hand experience, unique stories and intresting facts that only a true historian would know. He answered any and all of our questions and gave us a close up and comprehensive understanding of the role Haverhill played in the development our our country. A truly unique experience to spend a rewarding hour and a half on a Sunday afternoon with such a antimated stoy teller.

We found the staff at Buttonwoods to be extremely knowledgeable and engaging. We spent about an hour having a tour of the small museum which houses many artifacts from the local area. It also has a good section on Hannah Duston, 1697 time period.

We learned so much about Haverhill history. Very enjoyable day. Recommend for those interested in history and especially those who want to learn more about Haverhill.

This colonial town has quite the past. This museum has interesting exhibits, including shoemaking which was something farmers did in the winter in 10 footer shacks.
Popular with school groups, they have a good hands on programs in summer.
