Mashpee Indian Museum

The museum is surprisingly small and the collection of photos is a bit sparse. But it’s not these things that captivate your imagination or interest, it’s the local curator. She provided us a glimpse of how her people lived and survived from past to present; the hardship in maintaining their cultural identity and struggles integrating into America’s new social rules and prejudices

I do highly recommend a visit to this small Mashpee museum to better understand how the Mashpee Indians integrated into America and what they lost in doing so.

There is a replica of a hut dwelling and a canoe. You can see how the Indians utilize these materials to survive.

At the end of the parking lot, there is a small creek stream with-a Herring ladder. I found it very interesting to see and learn about the Herring returning upstream to nest.

Filling in New England History

This was a small museum with limited displays, but the guide was fantastic. She was tribe member with a long family history and knowledge of the tribe's customs and history.

It sort of felt like " the rest of the story" from the Native American side. I learned so much and am planning to do more research in my spare time. This is a must see with the tour guide if you are interested in New England history.

Don't miss it
Our guides were women who grew up in this area and are part of the tribal group.
The museum offered tremendous info on yesteryear and today.
Very reasonable entrance fee- even a senior discount!

Very interesting and informative museum about Wampanoags. Relatively small but fascinating to learn their history and interactions with settlers from a different perspective. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. Would recommend to everyone!!

A little gem!

We enjoyed our visit to this museum. Our guide was so knowledgeable and welcoming. We learned a lot. Our kids were bored after a little while. If there were some hands on things inside the small museum that would be great. Seeing the Indian house in the back was cool—we loved learning about the Wampanoag tribe. If they had just a little more to see/do it would be great, especially paying $8 per person admission. We wanted to buy t shirts on the way out, but they were not stocked with various sizes—they only had a few men’s tank tops. Having a supply of shirts would’ve been great.

An Intimate Perspective of Wampanoag Life
Our docent was a tribal member descended from early members of the Wampanoag tribe and very familiar with the history and willing to share her family and tribe's legacy. The museum is a little jewel, with a dugout canoe and wigwam in the back. There's a lot to learn and our host was generous in sharing the tribe's history up to the present day.

Fortunately spied this place on a tourist map.

We visited here on Wed 10/18/18 1:00pm. We had breakfast in Hyannis and we picked up the local merchant map for tourists. It had a small article on the Mashpee Wampanoag Museum. This site is the geographic center of their historic tribal lands. This is located next to the fish ladder for the herring runs on the Mashpee River.
We were greeted by an elder, Mother Bear and Courtney Powell who is the guide for visitors here. Hours are 10am-4pm M-F approx April-Nov. Admission is $5. for adults, $4. for elders (seniors) & educators, $2. for children 6-18.
An older style home serves as the visitor center, museum, & classroom. There is a longhouse (weety8), dugout boat (mush8n), areas for cooking and planting demonstrations, and a meeting house for tribal members. Don't miss the history of the Wampanoag whalers in the early 1800s and Wampanoag Leaders exhibit.
Centuries of history passed down via an oral tradition and preserved for the future by these present day Wampanoags. Courtney Powell was welcoming, knowledgeable, and very proud of the traditions she lives every day. She is an excellent choice as the first Wampanoag you meet when visiting here.
Might have been more than luck that lead us here. Follow you curiosity and not the highway. We will visited every time we are on Cape Cod.

Rainy Day Visit
2018年9月 • 家庭
Had an amazing hour listening to Mother Bear telling us of the history of the Wampanoag Indians located in Mashpee on Cape Cod & the lives they led pre & post the arrival of Europeans to the (now) USA. Very impressive array of her family tree and descendants upto the present time and the way in which they still keep their Indian traditions alive. A pity the typical home made from tree bark had suffered wind damage, but it still allowed us to see how past generations lived prior to the modern age.

A small building that is non discript. Inside artifacts and portraits of many generations of Wampanoag history. A member of the tribe is the commentator and well informed about the tribal history, generations of her family and traditions of Native Americans. The tribe in Mashpee is still an active, functioning tribe. Plan to spend an hour or more in the two structures. Maybe a bit boring for little ones. A minimal fee for admission, under $5.00.
