The Robbins Museum of Archaeology, founded and run by the Massachusetts Archaeological Society, is yet another interesting museum located in the town of Middleboro (also spelled Middleborough). This one focuses on Native cultures of New England with exhibits featuring both archaeological and ethnographic artifacts.

I was given a comprehensive tour which took me on a journey from the Northeast’s last glaciation approximately 25,000 years ago to the present. Native Americans moved into this area upon the retreat of the glacier about 12,000 BC; the descendant communities are continuing to thrive today.

Among the Museum highlights are: the Doyle collection of dolls made by North American native people and collected in the 1950s; artifacts from the Wapanucket site located in Middleborough and inhabited for 9,500 years; and the Blackfeet initiation dress worn by Mary Roberts Rinehart (a mystery writer known as the American Agatha Christie) when she was made an honorary member of the tribe. Another memorable object for me is the mastodon tooth (see photo) – a reminder of what once lived in the area.

My guide spoke of the impressive skills of the Native Americans who he noted were as accomplished as any other people. Some of the exceptional objects on view include the spiral cutting bit drills (see photo) excavated from the 11,000 year old Bull Brook site (now Ipswich, MA), that are comparable to present day steel drills.

This collection is geared to those interested in New England’s archaeology and ethnography. Opening times are Wednesdays from 10am to 4pm and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. A tour is recommended.

The Robins features a larger than expected collection and a welcoming knowledgeable staff. A section is devoted to a twelve thousand year old site in northern Maine, which is the oldest in New England. At least one member of our group visited this site during one of the excavations. The Vail site is the topic of at least one Gramly book, and is also described in a book by Bourque. Anther display explains various techniques used to date artifacts. Hours are very limited and there is free parking across the street. You could request a tour.

This inexpensive museum takes you through the history of Native Americans in the area from thousands of years ago to today. There are alot of artifacts on display, especially arrowheads, from a local dig. We had a 45 minute-long guided tour from a very knowledgeable gentleman. The best part was being allowed to throw a replica "atlatl" spear out in the yard. This Native American weapon is launched using a 2 foot long piece of wood which multiplies the force of your arm and sends the spear much further. My kids loved it.
