Hidden Away, But Worth the Trip
Many other reviewers have written about this house and described what the building and the tour are like, so I'll merely say that I agree that it's a beautiful site and well worth taking it in.
I'll instead concentrate on a few cautions (I won't call them negatives) that folks should take note of if they are planning a visit to this attraction. First, be sure you remember that the house is not open on Tuesdays or Wednesdays. The grounds are available, but you won't be able to get into the house on those days. (I've found that to be a common annoyance while vacationing in the Berkshires; many of the attractions are not open midweek.)
Next, it really is tucked away on a hill. As far as I can tell, it is only accessible by steep, largely unmarked gravel roads. If your vehicle has AWD you'll be glad of that, and I don't know how anyone ever found the place before GPS units became common.
Finally, they don't accept credit cards as payment for the tours. If you arrive with a family of five or so and don't carry much cash, that could be a problem. I don't remember seeing that stated on their website, and if it isn't I think it definitely should be.
Another positive point is that, unlike at most sites of this type, photography is allowed throughout the house.
All in all, the museum is certainly worth overcoming a couple of small challenges to visit.

Thank you for your review! We did want to clarify that we do accept credit cards for tours. I will certainly clarify that for our docent.

Neat Colonial House off the Beaten Path
This house dates from the mid-18th century outside Monterrey MA. It has been renovated and restored with period pieces to match the times. It is located on a huge expanse of land with gardens and hiking trails. The story of the minister and his family that lived there is fascinating and there is a guided tour that details their story and the surrounding region.

Hidden Gem

This 18th Century historic home is a worthwhile stop in the Berkshires. Unlike the grand mansions, it gives you insight into middle class life in the 18th century. The docent was very knowledgeable and interesting. The grounds and trails are lovely, as well as the drive here. A wonderful bucolic spot to spend a few hours.

Must see

We concur with the other positive reviews. This is an amazing restoration labor of love spanning 10 years in the 60s of authentic renovation of this 1750 pre-independence house. Gardens are beautiful, and the contents are all authentic pieces. The tour guide details the daily life of that time and the use of various household implements in the kitchen, bedrooms, and other parts of the house. Highly recommended.

If you are ever in the Berkshires...

Be sure to seek out the Bidwell House Museum, tucked away in the woods where once was a thriving 18th century town. All that is left is a lovingly restored minister's house, filled with antiques, a terrific tour, and informative interpretative trails and gardens on 192 acres of forests and fields. I learned about the Mohican Indians and their forced evacuation to Wisconsin, a hidden fact of Massachusetts' history.

Step Back in Time -- The Real Deal

Visit the Bidwell House -- deep in the woods of the Berkshire Hills -- and you will step back in time to a real pre-colonial house and farmstead, with nearly 200 acres. Some nice trails, too. Herb garden. Vegetable garden. The docents are well trained and enthusiastic. The house itself has been loving restored to its original look. You will think the residents have just stepped out. The tours take an hour. Wheelchair accessible on the ground floor, with a good video tour of the second floor. Very well done for this sort of house museum.

Off the beaten track but well worth the visit. Amazed at knowledge of tour guides who are high school students. Learned a great deal and the grounds are beautiful.

Second trip to BH&M. Great site for tours and special events. Learning why this historic home is tucked at the end of the road explains more about how New England was settled. Informative tour, rollicking period music, pleasant stone walls, garden,s and trails. Closest lunch was in Lee.

Fantastic house and garden

We visited for the first time and found a hidden gem of a historic house and garden. The docent was really informative and had great antidotes about the family and historic trivia which really made a huge difference in the visit. A must see.
