I used to live here when I was a kid. Off or shoulder season is the best time to come. Very clean!! Be careful of the drop off in the water. Around 7pm a sandbar opens up far left on beach.
Lots of shells and driftwood to collect.
Sometimes the locals and tourists do not clean up after their dogs wich is a shame...so careful where you walk near the top of the beach.

I had came here but parked all the way at the end where the light house is in June this year with my husband and I did not enjoy that experience because the bathrooms were porta potties and a very far walk to even see the ocean, you had to carry all your things extrely far acorss the gritty sand which they do not rake. I did not like that people walked right infront of us and were fishing, did not make me want to go in the water. That part of the island was very cool though because we found sea glass and there were big sticks forming a tee pee to take pictures at.
I came back here in August for a girls trip and we stayed on 65th street which was walking distance to the beach, was only 20 steps. Very beautiful spot, get to watch all the boats. There was a rip current which was very strong though, and when you walked in the drop was pretty severe and you keep sinking into the sand. There were alot of of shells and rocks also your stepping on while in the water.
I had issue with horseflies this time like people said in reviews above, I have about 3 huge welts on me, thank god i brought bug spray. I don't know if there was black naught hatching going on the weekend we were there because where we were sitting there were hundreds of them crawling in and out of the sand and on us from time to time. When we went into the water later in the day there were so many of them dead floating in piles to. The other issue was we had no bathroom once again, so it was walking back to the air b and b or just going in the ocean.
Me and my friend took some walks on the beach at night and it was so pretty with the moon. We also found many alive snails and crabs on the sand, and there were alot of shells to go through!
The following day which as Sunday we wanted to hit the beach one more time. We checked out and started driving down the road and found a dirt parking lot which they charged us $30 but the beach was across the street and they actually finally had bathroom facilities which was were basically brand new. There was a cute chair to take a picture in which said plum island. The sand was a lot softer on this side and there were barely and of those bugs from the day before. Some people did stop and start to fish again in front of us but what can you do.
If i ever come again I would park at this part of the island because it is a lot more cleaner, closer to bathrooms and there's little shops that sell food and gifts that are in walking distance.

National Park: The beach at the very end of the road (the dirt road, after the asphalt stops) is spectacular. The sand is clean and the views are great. Definitely go here.

Absolutely brilliant, particularly for birders during migration periods. Probably the top location in Massachusets.

My first time to this beach and it was fabulous! I found sea glass, which I haven't been able to find anywhere else I've been. The beach was fairly clean and looked to be well kept. Highly recommend a visit here! The only downside was the parking - the closest parking lot was not attended, so I had to scramble around to get the correct amount I needed to park there.

Beautiful natural expanse with many varied types of marshlands and beaches. Very nice Audubon with displays, maps, seating areas and giftshop. Great birding, easy access up 95 from points south. Fee.

We took a lovely walk on a wooden boardwalk like path. It was easy to walk and navigate. There were A LOT of birders out, so if that's your thing, this would be a good place. We wanted to walk on the beach, but unfortunately for us, it was nesting season for the Piping Plover, so almost all beach access was closed.

This is a very interesting place, lots of bird watching, photo rich for wildlife! We went bicycling through the island, lots of places to watch and rest! The beach is excellent and parking is spacious, pack a picnic, enjoyed the "ambience". We usually visit this island about 2 to 3 times a year!

We were worried about the dreaded green heads. We didn’t see one. Delightful. We parked for $30 near Beachcoma. The port a pots were being cleaned as we arrived (Sunday 7/31) and I will say they were the cleanest best smelling port a pots I have ever used. It was astonishing ! Worth the trip. Gorgeous views. Not crowded

Iv read that the sand has a purple hue to it on this beach. is that true? any particular area or beach more likely to see that?? thanks

I’m not familiar with that, but no, that hasn’t been my experiences when we’ve visited. However, it’s one of the fewer beaches in MA that has soft sand (most are rocky).

Where can you park for free on the island, just want to stop for photos, view of beach? Lighthouse? Thank you

Hi. Most parking this time of year (peak season) isn’t free, but if you’re going to the beach, then it’s worth it. One of the best and easily accessible beaches on the North Shore is right at the end of the Plum Island Turnpike. There’s a public lot (must pay) there with a short walk across the road to a great beach area. I took some of our youngest son’s Senior pictures here and where we would bring our friends and family when they came to visit. The lighthouse does have public parking lot. Makes for a great day!
