Incredibly Rude Staff Member/Volunteer Encounter
My wife and I stopped by Joppa Flats Nature & Education Center in Newburyport on our way home from Maine, where we spotted our first Snowy Owl in the wild followed by spotting 2 Bald Eagles in Newburyport. We are new to birding so these sightings were incredibly exciting for us!

While in our car outside in the Joppa Flats' parking lot we rudely approached by an older woman, whom apparently volunteers at the Center. Our car was idling for about 2 minutes while we got organized prior to heading inside. This volunteer decided it was her place to lecture us on the environmental destruction we were causing by idling and went into a lengthy list of negative effects our car emissions posed to the environment.

Now, I'm the first to admit our car should not have been idling. But the rudeness displayed by this volunteer was beyond belief. I'm not perfect but do belong to several outdoor and environmental organizations, have contributed to beach cleanups and eschew the use of single use bottles. Heck, our family even composts! So while my momentary lapse of judgement was a bit regrettable, this volunteer's actions were WAY out of line.

I do not plan to visit the Center again!!!

Joppa flats; must for all borders and naturalists

As avid birders and naturalist we stopped by Joppa Flats education Center and met with the affable Mike who provided us important information about the area and where to find the birds. Thank you Mike!

The education center was modern even equipped with chargers for electric cars and clean bathrooms. We spent about 1/2 hour exploring the center and visiting there reasonably priced gift shop.

As directed by Mike we drove about eight minutes to Parker River national wildlife refuge, a.k.a. Plum Island. It cost five dollars to enter and we made multiple stops to hike trails, boardwalks, and beaches. This was during fall migration and we identified 49 species of birds and two were life birds for us: buff breasted sandpiper and Baird’s sandpiper. We also had nice looks at an American Avocet and Western sandpiper. Yes, a successful trip indeed.

Things to keep in mind: wear comfortable shoes, layers of clothing, sunscreen, insect repellent, water and snacks. There is one restaurant just before the entrance to Plum Island, BOB Lobster, pictured below. Review also posted. No food was available on the island. If one parking lot is full, simply continue on your travels, the lots empty as the day progresses just loop back. Be sure to stop at Joppa Flats education Center and speak with the helpful knowledgeable staff on tips as to where the birds are and best trails to take depending on time of day tide and time of year. We spent the entire day on Plum Island and it was magnificent!

For the birds

This is an education center, not a museum or visitor center. That is, there is a great deal less to look at versus, say, the splendid Parker River National Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center across the road. But that was not the problem. The problem was that the staff at this "education center" was not particularly welcoming or friendly, even after we noted that we were enthusiastic, long-time Mass Audubon members/supporters. The staff finally did give desultory tips on the time of year to come see ample bird life. But why act like interacting with your member-supporters is such a chore?

A unique and welcoming place.
I have attended several events at Joppa Flats Education Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, organized by David Davis, the Poet in Residence. These events featured poets and/or photographers and/or birders who wrote poems about birds, took marvelous photos of birds, or wrote nature poems or pieces. The events were delightful and included open mic time which brought in more spontaneous readings - all great! I highly recommend any program put on at this center.

Stopped by on our way out to Plum Island and the staff members were incredibly helpful in describing the latest bird sightings and where we might have the most luck in finding them. Also gave us a tip about an owl residing in a tree in the town. We had great fun.Thank you!

Helpful Volunteers Provide Advice on Birding

We stopped by before exploring the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. The Audubon volunteers were very helpful in telling us which birds to look for, and also gave use valuable information about visiting Maudslay State Park. We would NEVER have gone there!

Visited the Joppa Flat Education Center, while on a bird-watching trip to Plum Island
2016年5月 • 好友
Visited some of the exhibits at the Joppa Flats Education Center but, as it was at the end of our trip, I spent most of the time in the shop, where I purchased one of the few squirrel-proof bird feeders recommended by the Audubon Society, as well as The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America and Sibley's Basic Birding . I only wish I had had the former before embarking on trails in the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. As others have said, you have to love wildlife and birding to enjoy being here at the Education Center. Recommend heartily, if you are a bird-watcher!

Provides a variety of programs including the 1/2 day birding trip that I took, to camp for kids. A great resource when visiting the area or for casual or serious nature lovers.

The center is a birders dream. Plum Islands Parker River National Wild Life Refuge was recently named one of the top three bird watching places in the U. S.
