Such a lovely library! I stopped in to visit and read some magazines. They had a great collection. There are a couple of rooms that are gorgeously decorated. It was a lively place with many people coming in and out and even a knitting group met there. It looks like they have some great community programs there.

Always a treat to visit this library. The rooms are still easily imagined as a house. beautifully decorated for a library, and the addition is in keeping with the home.

I visited this attraction with a group of me and Jenna as part of the BFAIR volunteering. I thought at first that it would be something that I would be interested in, but then memories of my grandfather passing took over. Also, the light in the bathroom was controlled by a motion detector, and that was nerve racking because if it didn't sense any motion, the light would go off. All in all, it was an average volunteer job experience.

Sorry about the motion detector lights in the restrooms Alan. Motion sensors are part of the energy conservation effort that give us our LEED certification. There are many places in the library where lights and even heat and airflow are controlled by room activity. The restroom lights turn off automatically to conserve energy when patrons leave the area. This is the first time we've heard about folks being left in the dark. Sorry for your inconvenience.

Out-of-town author, visiting friends in NoA, needed a place to work quietly with a decent wifi signal. A great resource and friendly welcoming facility. Staff, volunteers, and board are all to be commended.

Great historical building with a new addition that blends in with the character of the museum. great children's department and activities. offers something for everyone.

The city of North Adams' public library is in a beautifully restored mansion, the former home of one of the city's mill owners. It is a quiet place, appropriate for a library, with a fairly small collection of books but a lively schedule of programs. The local history collection on the second floor is especially useful for researchers. But this is probably not a site I would visit if I didn't have that interest.

This is an interesting place to visit and free. The librarians were knowledgeable about the house. Probably only need about a half hour here as a tourist. Visited January 2016.

While visiting my old home town my sister took me on a tour of the Blackinton Mansion which is the town library. I hadn't been there since maybe the 3rd grade.....over 40 years ago. It has recently been totally redone beautifully, preserving the old while embracing the new features needed in an updated facility. The only sad part is that the tower has been sealed off and one of the better views of the city is no longer available, but the building is a must see while in town.

This former family mansion, now a public library, offers a decor seen in grand old hotels but offers the necessary modern technology for readers and researchers. Built with exquisite details in 1865-67 for Sanford Blackinton, who made his fortune providing woolen cloth for Civil War Union soldiers, the red-brick
building was purchased to renovate as a library in 1896. As an architecture buff, I had this on my "to see" list in North Adams because of its Second Empire style, but I was unprepared for the nostalgia I felt when going through the library.-
My father, long gone, instilled in me a great love of reading. This is the library, where he was encouraged to read and where he spent much time during his youth in North Adams. As I stood in the main reading room, I could picture him sitting in one of the lovely easy chairs beneath the beautiful chandelier, caught up in an adventure story. This space shows off wallpapered walls, massive windows, a fireplace with a huge framed mirror above the mantel and bookcases that would fit well in a private home.
Kudos to the architect who maintained the integrity of the building's interior while converting the first private home for library use in the United States. Rich woodworking remains and a handsome staircase. Antiques and paintings, original to the house, also add to the ambiance.
A restoration/addition project gave much more space to the library in 2005. The addition has a modern look and I found it briefly jarring, in an architectural sense, when moving from the old to the new.
Staff here are friendly, helpful and willing to answer questions about the building. After a conversation together, one man sought me out to offer a brochure on the library's history.
When I left the building, one of my first purchases was a book. My father would have approved.
I consider this library to be a must stop for any visitor interested in history, architecture or libraries. It is only a 1-minute drive from Mass MoCA and worth just a look at the exterior if the library is closed or time is limited.

I've been going to this library for years with my daughters, and there's a great selection of books, movies (VHS and DVD) and activities (when my children were younger there was a reading & coloring program.) There are often special activities such as pajama movie nights as well. The real gem here (outside of the friendly and helpful staff) is the building itself. An old mansion with a bit of a modern extension at the rear (which clashes a bit,) but well worth exploring. The enormous windows, the skylight, the main staircase and especially the 'speaking tubes' built into the walls are worth a visit if you're breezing through the town.
