A thrilling experience for Melville fans! The guides are knowledgeable, the house and grounds are gorgeous, and you can stand in the room where Melville wrote most of Moby-Dick. Not to be missed!

On a beautiful October afternoon my husband and I visited this wonderful home. As most everyone has commented, we were not disappointed. Our docent fellow, a self professed Melville Fanatic of sorts. He captivated our attention with the wonderful stories which were Melville’s life. A must visit in the Berkshires!

Arrowhead is a gem! Our tour guide Karen brought our tour experience to life with her knowledge and enthusiasm about Melville, ‘Moby Dick,’ and the house. Standing in his study and being with his desk and amazing view brought his presence to life. Worth a lot!

It's both exciting and nostalgic to look out the same window onto the same fields that inspired Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick. The guided tour, which was excellent, provided a timeline of Melville's upbringing, experiences and his family life which had tragedy throughout which contributed to his writings. The home was filled with period furniture and pictures of his relatves, family and friends. The original barn serves as the greeting center and the grounds/trails are available to explore.

The tour guide was very knowledgeable. We learned a few things we didn't know and got to see inside the life of Herman Melville.

This is a destination that has interest for many people. The property is owned by the Berkshire Historical Society, and so there are extra exhibits that reveal the history of the area. The house itself is a great window into the challenging life of a famous writer. The grounds have beautiful landscaping, plus scenic nature trails.

One of the place we thought we had already visited, but had not. Glad we went. The tour guide was excellent and very much accommodated my hearing difficulties.

I made a quick stop in here looking to learn a little more about the Moby Dick author. Property is beautifully maintained and I loved being able to roam the grounds. It costs $16 a person to do the tour, which I decided not to do as I was the only person there at the time. If ever in the area again, I may choose to do the tour. Staff seemed fairly friendly.

I showed up at Arrowhead in late afternoon on a beautiful autumn day, and I was the only person on my particular "tour." Which, during these viral times, was a boon. The history of the house (and barn and grounds) is so interesting. As some other visitor said in his/her review, much of the furnishings is not original, but it IS of the period, so the vibe is very good. And frankly, just being able to stand there in the room where Melville wrote "Moby-Dick" and look out the window he looked out ... that was plenty enough for me! Lovely staff, nice little gift shop ... and a very evocative visit for literary history folks.

Herman Melville’s Arrowhead estate is a modest property in a beautiful setting. Our guide Louise did an excellent job of bringing Melville’s personal saga and literary heritage to life. I emerged with a much better appreciation for this writer’s life and works.
