This is a pretty area on the Vermont border-indeed, several of the travels go into Vermont. The footing is mostly good, though there were several extremely muddy areas.

You hike through some unremarkable landscapes, except for the meadow, which had a bit of old time vibe. I was waiting for a team of horses and a fellow with a scythe to appear. Just nice. Not great.

We walked through the meadow and up to the summit. It provided a walk for the dog and was near town. Was it great? No. Did it accomplish the goal? Yes.

We were actually here in October of 2018 for the fall foliage, and I don't remember it being lovely in the particular way, but it was a nice walk, primarily in shaded areas, which my husband preferred, and the walking was easy. It's definitely worth checking out if in the area.

Mountain Meadow Preserve is a Trustees of Reservations property with trail entrances in both Williamstown, Massachusetts and Pownal, Vermont. The Williamstown entrance and parking area is right off U.S. Route 7. Unfortunately, the vistas on the map are now overgrown and are devoid of views, but the trail network is otherwise quite interesting and somewhat diverse, maximizing use of the acreage as it borders North Adams watershed, Williamstown natural areas, and private property.
The meadow itself is quite fascinating, maintained in a state that consists of wildflowers and milkweed that are a perfect habitat for Monarch butterflies. I visited in the fall, after the Monarchs had begun their migration to Mexico and the milkweed pods had burst into beautiful seed clusters. There is a trail that circles the meadow, including an encounter with a nice old farm implement that is rusting like the Tin Woodsman in the Wizard of Oz.
The other trails in the preserve are mostly old cart roads, wide and well marked with signage (some of which has been vandalized and needs to be repaired.) Along these roads, I encountered 4 old New England dump sites, always fascinating with their old bottles and rusting tin cans. One of the highlights has to be the ruins of Mausert’s Camp, where two old stone fireplaces mark the site of cabins that burned down in the 1970s.
The preserve is said to be habitat for a variety of wildlife, although what I encountered on my Sunday afternoon hike in autumn was primarily dozens of chipmunks. As a smaller property, there were times when I was not far from the sounds of nearby traffic on Route 7, abutters mowing their lawns, shooting, trains, and families on nearby trails. In general, I felt like I had the property to myself and was able to appreciate a nice New England woodland.

There are about 5 miles of trails in the Preserve. We only went to the first overlook in the field as we'd been to 9 other reservations on this day and it was getting late. You get a very nice view with little effort (only 1/3 of a mile hike up to the top of the meadow). Well maintained and signed. The short road into the parking area (Mason st) is a bit rough so take it slowly.

Pretty meadow, wooded loop path is nice. Not strenuous, best view is from the back side of the meadow itself, far to the left as you enter from Mason Street. Pretty to stroll the perimeter of the meadow, woodsy part is easy hiking, "summit" area has no view so do not be disappointed.

If you like walking through the woods, this is for you. For a brief part of the hike, you can see mountain vistas, and then you're in the woods and at the mercy of the mosquitoes. My wife loves to hike and thought it was great; I don't and didn't.

This preserve provides a wonderful walk in the woods with very little elevation change. Your best views are had at the meadow at the veginning of the trail. The rest of the hike is a stroll through the woods ro wnjoy thw natire all around you. It's definitely a noce place to just get outside and spend a peaceful feelw hours.

Yet another great Trustees property, this one has clear, well marked trails with a nice mixture of meadow, mountain and woodland. Good parking. Not that strenuous. No water or facilities.
